Content: Finding the Sumof the Terms of an Arithmetic Sequence

DISCUSSIONS:

In this lesson, you will learn how to find the sum of the first n terms of an
arithmetic sequence. You will also learn how to apply the process in your daily
life.

An arithmetic series is the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Example:

20 + 70 = 90
90 is the sum of the first two terms.

20 + 70 + 120 = 210
210 is the sum of the first three terms.

20 + 70 + 120 + 170 = 380

380 is the sum of the first four terms.

20 + 70 + 120 + 170 + 220 = 600

600 is the sum f the first five terms.

20 + 70 + 120 + 170 + 220 + 270 = 870

870 is the sum of the first six terms.

In the example above, 90, 210, 380, 600, 870 is an example of an arithmetic
series.

The equation below can be used in computing for the sum of the first n terms of
an arithmetic sequence:

n
Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
2

where: n = number of terms

a1 = first term
an=nth term
d = common difference
