Herein contained is A Purification of Defilement which Completely Dispels Evil Fortune by Guru
Padmasambhava, The Precious One of Oddiyana

GU RU RIN PO CHE LA CHAG TSAL LO

I bow down to the Precious Guru.

This is how to purify defilements. Those who are ill, and so forth, should perform this by reciting the
following while circling the sang fire holding an arrow adorned with silken ribbons (mda dar) and a bowl
filled with flour and grain in their hands.

KYE DANG PO DRIB KYI KUNG SHAD PA

KYE Please listen - I shall begin by explaining the root of defilement:

MA RIG LAE JUNG DUG CHING NGAL

Sprung from ignorance and inattentiveness, it brings with it suffering and calamity.

DRIB KYI GYU NI CHOD NGAN TE

Its direct cause is mean and injurious activity,

KYEN NI TSA LUNG JUNG WA TRUG

And its supporting condition, imbalance in the channels and airs and confusion of the elements.

TAG NI MI LAM NGAN PA CHAR

Its signs are that evil dreams arise

LUE NI NAD DANG DON GYI DZIN

And ones body is under the sway of sickness and demonic attack.

DRAE BU LUE SEM DREL WA O

Its result is that body and mind separate.

In short, all disharmony and inauspicious conditions

DRIB TU MA GYUR GANG YANG MED

Do not go beyond defilement, nor are they anything else.

DRIB MED BAR CHAD CHI LA YOD

Where there is no defilement, what obstacles can arise?

DE LA PAN TAB SANG KYI CHOD

Therefore, by this beneficial and skilful means of purification, I make offering.

NANG WA DEN ZUNG TRUL NANG DRIB

Grasping onto appearances as real is the obscuration of illusory appearance;

YE SHE ROL PAI LONG DU SANG

Purify it into the vast expanse of the display of primordial wisdom.

MI LAM BAG CHAG TRUL NANG DRIB

Illusory habits and propensities, too, are the obscuration of illusory appearance;

GYUR MED CHOE KUI LONG DU SANG

Purify them into the vast expanse of the dimension of primordial reality.

DON GYI GOL SA SHE JAI DRIB

Doubt as to the goal is the defilement of the knowable;

ROL PA NAM SHII YING SU SANG

Purify it into the absolute space of the four modes of presentation of being.

ZAD SAR MA GYOL KUN SHII DRIB

Not to arrive at complete exhaustion of phenomena is the obscuration of the basic foundation;

RANG SHAL MA TONG TONG GOM DRIB

Not to see ones own face is the obscuration of meditation upon open-natured emptiness;

Purify it into the absolute space of radiant naked and primordial awareness.

DAM TSIG NYAM PAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the scattering of the Dakinis and Dharmapalas

KAN DRO CHOE KYONG YAR WA SANG

Brought on by the defilement of damaged vows of commitment;

ZUG PUNG RO YI DRIB POG PAE

Purify damage to life and life force brought about by demonic obstacles

DUD CHAD LA TSE NYAM PA SANG

Stemming from defilement of the form-aggregate due to contact with corpses;

NYA NGAN YUG SAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the scattering of the protective deities

KYOB PAI LHA NAM DROE PA SANG

Brought about by defilement contracted from contact with the grief of widows;

RIM DANG DZE YI DRIB POG PAE

Purify harm to the quality of the physical organs

WANG PO YON TAN GAG PA SANG

Produced by the defilement of plague and leprosy;

Purify the diminishing of compassion and increase of harmful thoughts

Brought about by contamination arising from birth;

MI RIG NGAN PAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the mental darkness and mental turbulence

NYING TIB SEM GYUD TRUG PA SANG

Caused by obscuration sprung from ones ancestors.

MI TSANG ZAE KOM DRIB POG PAE

Purify the resurgence of old diarrhoea and vomiting

TRU KYUG NAD RO LANG PA SANG

Brought about by contamination through unclean food and drink.

GOE NGAN BAG PAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the drop in intensity of the four joys

GA SHII NUE PA DRI WA SANG

Brought on by the defilement of soiled and polluted clothing;

KON DRAE NA YI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the defilement of being ruled by an attitude of resentment and contention

KA CHAD KU DOG JUNG WA SANG

Whereby all agreement becomes impossible;

NAE KANG GOG PAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify defilement of the senses and the affliction of wandering mind

Stemming from defilement in connection with old and crumbling buildings;

TAB LA SHOB KYI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the loss of property and capital punishment

GOD KA SHI CHAD JUNG WA SANG

Connected with defilement stemming from the pollution and scorching of ovens;

GONG YAB BAG KOR DRIB POG PAE

Purify the stupidity and thick-headedness

SHE RIG LEN DU SONG WA SANG

Arising from the enchanting Mudras of ones entourage;

NGAN NGAG TAD TUI DRIB POG PAE

Purify obscuration by oppressive enchantment

GONG CHOG NAN PAE TIB PA SANG

Due to defilement by evil mantras directed at one;

NGAN JOR DZAE KYI DRIB POG PAE

Purify separation from the practice-deity

NYE JED LHA DANG YE WA SANG

Because of defilement through incorrectly compounded practice-substances;

BUD MED NGAN PAI DRIB POG PAE

Purify the decline in life-force, merit and power

TSE SOD WANG TANG NYAM PA SANG

Caused by defilement from blindly following the behests of women;

Purify loss of physical radiance and vital essence

From the defilement of vows and commitments;

Purify obstruction to the accumulation of merit in body and speech

LUE NGAG GE JOR SHAN PA SANG

Stemming from contact with the sinful, and with butchers and slaughterers;

LAE NGAN NAM MIN DRIB POG PAE

Purify being cut down by the ever increasing illnesses and sufferings

NAD CHOD DUG NGAL MANG WA SANG

Due to obscuration from as yet unripened evil karma;

BU LON LAN CHAG DRIB POG PAE

Purify the seemingly uncaused results

NYE MED LA YOG JUNG WA SANG

Of defilement by unpaid debt and the results of previous actions.

DOR NA MI TSANG LAE GYUR PAI

In short, purify all possible impure acts

KYE PA DAR MAI JI DRIB SANG

Such as the defilement of fornication in middle-aged men,

BUD MED DAR MAI YUG DRIB SANG

The defilement of widowhood in middle-aged women,

And that of breaking the rules of good conduct for monks or nuns.

RI TSE CHANG TAD ZAE DRIB SANG

Purify the obscuration of food caused by overreaching oneself;

BAG CHOL CHOD NGAN GOE DRIB SANG

Purify the defilement of need stemming from wrong and confused activity;

LO RIG NGAN PAI TAM DRIB SANG

Purify defilement of conversation from the deceit of clever tricksters,

KA MANG MI KAI LENG DRIB SANG

The obscuration of thoughtless and irresponsible advice from many sources,

LAG MANG TSON GYI YUG DRIB SANG

And that of often and ill-used weapons.

CHAD PA POG PAI TSON DRIB SANG

Purify the obscuration of punishment, beatings and imprisonment.

TENG NAE ZA YI GYAL DRIB SANG

Purify the affliction of being controlled by the planets, above,

OG NAE LU YI ZUNG DRIB SANG

Being seized by the Nagas, below,

BAR NA TSEN GYI ZER DRIB SANG

Or being subjected to pain by the Tsen of the region between,

TSAM NA GYAL POI NYOE DRIB SANG

And purify the madness brought on by the Gyalpo of the intermediate directions.

Purify the afflictions of Maras noose,

LHA DREI GYAN DRIB POG PA SANG

Purify obscurations stemming from the ornaments of gods and demons -

MI TUN KYEN NGAN BAR CHAD NAM

All disharmony, inauspicious conditions and obstacles,

SANG GI JANG SHING DAG GYUR CHIG

Cleansed by this purification offering, let them become unsullied.

BU LON LAN CHAG DRIB POG PAE

Purify the seemingly uncaused results

Our speech defilements evaporate like the dew before the sun,

SEM DRIB NAM KA TRIN TAR DENG

And our mental defilements disappear just like clouds in the sky.

PO LHA DRA LHA LA SOG PA

May vision of the male gods, protector gods,

PAN JE GO WAI LHA NAM KUN

And all those higher gods who are well disposed towards us,

SHAL RAE DA WA NYA TAR GYAE

Increase like the waxing moon.

DAG GI LUE DANG DRIB MA SHIN

Like body and its shadow,

KAD CHIG TSAM YANG MI DRAL WAR

May we never be separate - even for an instant.

Maternal uncle gods, you who are our firm support from behind,

MA LHAE DUN GYI KA WA GYI

Mother goddesses, you who are the pillar before us,

NOR LHAE NOR CHUG SUNG MA DZOD

And you wealth gods, protect my wealth and riches,

LHA SRUNG TU TSAL MA CHUNG SHIG

All you godly protectors, let not your power and skill diminish,

Hail! Hail!

Rise and spread!

Thus praying, circumambulate the sang-hearth as the smoke from the fire kindled of various types of wood
spreads throughout your dwellings, and then, reciting prayers of auspiciousness, strew flowers.
