THE GUIDE
Session 1
Cultivate Compassion for the Lost
Session 1 Materials:
Paper, pen and envelope for each participant.

1. Open in Prayer: (Boldness; concern for lost; obedience).

2. Share Your Experiences

 Why have you come to this class?

 Do you want to overcome your fear of sharing your faith or
to simply fine tune your evangelism skills?
 Are you here because you are concerned about someone‘s
salvation or are you here to develop a concern for the lost?

3. Point To Ponder Mini-Devotion: Read Luke 16:19-31

Question: What finally motivated the rich man to be

concerned for the lost?

Answer: Luke 16:27-28

27 And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to
send him to my father's house-
28 for I have five brothers- so that he may
warn them, lest they also come into this
place of torment.'

It was the reality of hell.

It was Compassion for the lost.
4. In Sanctuary
Write out what you want to see God do in your life
through these lessons.
Seal it in a envelope and place your name on it.
Give it to me for safe keeping.
It will be returned at the end of the course,
and you will then see how God answered your
prayers.

5. Close In Prayer

6. Apply The Principles (t-Sync Groups Discussion)

 Who are the people whose salvation you are most

concerned about? What are you doing about it?

 With whom do you find it more difficult to share the

Gospel: family, friends, or complete strangers? Why?

 What are your hopes and desires for this course?

7. Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

(t-Synch Groups Discussion)

 Call two people from your church and ask them the
following questions—
o Do you share your faith regularly?
o Do you go out of your way to share the Gospel
with strangers?
o If not, why don‘t you? What is the main reason
you don‘t share the Gospel?
 Write down your answers and bring them next week
for t-Synch Group Discussion.
Session 2
Discovering Hell’s Best Kept Secret
1. Open in prayer
2. How to Share the Gospel—The Law Part 1

Questions—
 What is the Law? (Ex. 20:1-17)
 What is it‘s purpose? (Rm. 3:19)
 What role if any should it play in sharing the Gospel?
(Rm. 3:20)

The following guide will help you fulfill the true purpose of the
Law in regards to sharing the Gospel.

The Law

 ―Do you think you are good person?‖

o 99% of the time they‘re going to so ―Yes.‖

 Have you heard of the Ten Commandments?

o You shall not lie—
 ―Have you ever lied before?‖ (The answer is
‗Yes‘ and if they say no, their lying)
 ―What does that make you?‖ (A liar)

o You shall not steal—

 ―Have you stolen something before?‖
 ―What does that make you?‖ (A thief)
NOTE:
They might want to argue at this point and say that
everyone has lied and stolen something but these
are little sins that God probably doesn‘t care about.
That‘s why we always ask about the following two
commandments.

o You shall not murder—

 Everyone is going to deny committing
murder but they cannot deny the following
text.
 1 John 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother
is a murderer,
 ―Have you ever hated someone?‖
(Most will admit this.)
 ―Then according to Scripture what
does that make you?‖ (A murderer.)

o You shall not commit adultery—

 Most will deny this but they cannot deny the
following text.
 Matthew 5:27-28
27 You have heard that it was said, 'You
shall not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you that everyone who looks
at a woman with lustful intent has already
committed adultery with her in his heart.
 ―Have you ever lusted after
someone?‖
(This is a no brainer, the answer is
yes)
 According to Jesus what does that
make you?‖ (An adulterer)

Word of Wisdom—
―I do not believe that any man can preach the Gospel who does not
preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the
silken thread of the Gospel through a man‘s heart unless you first
send the needle of the Law to make way for it.‖ – Charles
Spurgeon
 ―According to God‘s standard (the Ten Commandments)
are you a good person?‖

NOTE:
Some people are going to say ―Yes‖ for the following
reasons—
 ―God doesn‘t care about my ‗little‘ sins.‖
 ―I‘m still better than most people I know.‖
 ―God knows how sincere I am, He knows my
heart.‖

Use ―The Court‖ illustration to dismiss these

excuses.

―The Court‖
―If you were standing before a judge and you had
been found guilty of committing a crime (breaking
and entering; assault etc) do you think he would
dismiss the charges if you used the same excuses—
 ―I didn‘t steal that much from them.‖
 ―At least I didn‘t physically hurt anyone like
what‘s his name did.‖
 ―I‘m actually a good person judge, please let
me go.‖

o Remind them of God‘s Word—

Romans 3:12
All have turned aside; together they have
become worthless; no one does good, not even
one."

NOTE:
If they still refuse to admit that they are not good and in
fact sinners according to God‘s standard it is essentially impossible
to proceed because they will never see their need for Christ.

Luke 5:32
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to
repentance."
 ―If God were to judge you by His standard (the Ten
Commandments) today, would you go to heaven or hell?‖

NOTE:
At this point if they say ―heaven‖ go back to Romans 3:12
and remind them that even they have admitted that they are no
good.
If they say that they would go to ―hell‖ then it‘s time to
proceed further by asking—

 ―Does that concern you?‖

NOTE:
It‘s important for them to understand the consequences of
their sin.
We can help them do this by briefly describing the harsh
realities of hell.

Scripture consistently describes hell in three ways—

Eternal
Conscious
Suffering

Here‘s how Jesus described hell—

―…(it is an) unquenchable fire.‖ (Eternal)

Mark 9:43

―where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.‖
(Conscious; Suffering)
Mark 9:48

 ―The good news is that you don‘t have to spend an eternity

in hell.‖
―Because of what Jesus did and who He is you can have
eternal life instead of an eternity in hell.‖
3. Close in Prayer

4. Apply The Principles (t-Synch Groups Discussion)

 According to Romans 3:19, what is one function of God‘s

Law? Why is this function so important?
 What was the primary reason you came to the Savior? Did
you have a thorough knowledge of your sin? Where did
that knowledge come from? Did you have a fear of God?
 Since we are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone
(Ep. 2:8-9) and not by the Law, what then is the purpose of
the Law? (See Gal. 3:24).
 How does the Law reveal to us our true state and why is
this essential in order to share the Gospel? (See Rm. 3:20).
 Discuss these assignments from last week.

5. Break Out of Your Comfort Zone (t-Synch Groups

Discussion)
 One of the reasons we don‘t share the Gospel is due to a
fear of strangers. Before we meet again next week try to
talk to 10 strangers. A simple ―Hi, how are you doing
today?‖ will do just fine. Try it and you will see that its
really not that difficult. In fact, it will all most certainly
bring a smile to their face. Be prepared to share your
experiences next week in your t-Synch Group.
Session 3
Learning to Overcome Fear
1. Open with prayer.
2. Questions—
 What are some of your fears about sharing the Gospel?
 Who are the hardest people for you to share the Gospel
with?

3. Overcoming Fear
 Love for God (Mk. 12:30)
 Love for the Lost (Rm. 9:1-3)
o They face the certainty of an eternity in hell;
you face the possibility of persecution for a
time.

 The Use of Icebreakers

o For lost family and friends
 ―You know I love and care for you right?
The please give me a moment to share
my heart with you. Would you consider
yourself a good person?‖
o For lost acquaintances and strangers
 ―Can I give you this? (Hand them a
Gospel track) It asks a really important
question—are you a good person?‖…
 ―Hey can I just ask you a quick
question? Are you a good person?...‖

 Practice makes (kinda, sorta, probably not) Perfect

o Let‘s break in to pairs and practice sharing the
Law with one another and discuss the results
afterwards.
The Law Part 2

 ―Do you think you are good person?‖

o 99% of the time they‘re going to so ―Yes.‖

 Have you heard of the Ten Commandments?

o You shall not lie—
 ―Have you ever lied before?‖ (The answer is
‗Yes‘ and if they say no, their lying)
 ―What does that make you?‖ (A liar)

o You shall not steal—

5. Apply The Principles (t-Synch Groups Discussion)

 One of our greatest fears centers on us not knowing all the

right answers. How can the Law help us speak to their
heart instead of their intellect?
 What do you think of the following quote from Uber Cool
Dead Theologian R.C. Ryle?

―We may depend on it: men will never come to Jesus, and live for
Jesus, unless they really know why they are come. Those whom
the Spirit draws to Jesus are those whom the Spirit has convinced
of sin. Without thorough conviction of sin, men may seem to come
to Jesus and follow Him for a season, but they will soon fall away
and return to the world.‖
 Discuss the Break Out of Your Comfort Zone Assignment
from last week

One of the reasons we don‘t share the Gospel is due to a

fear of strangers. Before we meet again next week try to
talk to 10 strangers. A simple ―Hi, how are you doing

 Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Practice sharing the Law with someone at least once a

day for the nest week. Be prepared to share your
experience in next week‘s class.
Session 4
What’s Good About the Good News?
Part 1
1. Open in prayer
2. Questions
 What is the Gospel? (Yes, this is a trick question)
o See Eph. 2:8-9 (Grace; Faith; Christ)
 What‘s good about the good news?

3. Mini-Devotion I Cor. 15:1-5

I Cor. 15:1-5
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to
you, which you received, in which you stand,
2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I
preached to you- unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:
that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures,
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
The Gospel

HERE’S WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR YOU

 Unlike you and me Jesus lived a perfectly

sinless life

Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in
every respect has been tempted as we are, yet
without sin.

 He willingly paid the penalty for your sins by

bearing your sins and God‘s justice, ultimately,
dying on the cross.

1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God
but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.

Illustration:
Propitiation means that Jesus‘ death satisfied God‘s justice and
wrath over your sin.
For example what is the best way to put out a fire? Pour water on it
until it was completely out. That‘s what the blood or the death of
Christ did to the fires of hell for you.
His shed blood completely saturated the fires of hell for you
and God is no longer angry with you over your sin.
Jesus said from the cross: ―It is finished.‖
Meaning there is no longer any condemnation or penalty waiting
for those that trust in Him for salvation.
 He rose from the dead, guaranteeing you
eternal life.

NLT 1 Peter 1:3-4

3 All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, for it is by his boundless mercy that God has
given us the privilege of being born again. Now we
live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus
Christ rose again from the dead.
4 For God has reserved a priceless inheritance for
his children. It is kept in heaven for you, pure and
undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

JESUS WAS ABLE TO DO THIS BECAUSE OF

WHO HE IS
 He is fully God

Colossians 2:9
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

He had to be fully God to live a perfectly sinless

life.

 He is fully man

1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and there is one mediator
between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus,

He had to be fully man to be our substitute.

4. Close in prayer

5. Apply The Principles (t-Synch Groups Discussion)

 Explain the order of the ―good news‖ in 2 Sam.
12:13.
2 Samuel 12:13
David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And
Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you
shall not die.

 What is good about the Gospel to you? Be

specific.

 What does Rm. 7:22-25 tell us about the

goodness of the Gospel?

Romans 7:22-25
22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being,
23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the
law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that
dwells in my members.
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body
of death?
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

 What is the key to enabling sinners to see the

goodness of the Gospel?
Romans 7:7
What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it
had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not
have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall
not covet."

 Discuss the Break Out of Your Comfort Zone Assignment

from last week

Discuss how your time sharing the Law went this past
week.
o Did you feel awkward at first?
o Did you sense the benefit of practicing?
o Do you see the necessity of sharing the Law before
the Gospel?

 Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Practice sharing the Gospel with someone at least once

a day for the next week. Be prepared to share your
experience in next week‘s class.
Lesson 5
What’s Good About the Good News?
Part 2
1. Open with prayer
2. Meanwhile in Salt Lake City
(Tim‘s experience with a watered down version of
the Gospel)

About 15 years ago I had the privilege of going to Salt Lake City to
attend the Southern Baptist annual meeting. Volunteers were
recruited to go out into the city and share the Gospel. I was paired
up with an evangelism veteran who was supposed to show me the
ropes of inner city evangelism. As we drove up into our assigned
neighborhood he spotted two young boys riding bikes and told me
with absolute confidence that he was going to save them first. He
walked up to them and began his conversation—―Hey you all
believe in God right? (Yep.) And you don‘t want to go to hell do
you? (Of course not.) Then just repeat this prayer with me and
you‘ll never have to worry about it again—‗God in heaven, forgive
me of my sins. I am inviting Jesus to come and live in my heart.
Amen‘‖. Dutifully the boys repeated every word. He then went on
to proclaim them saved and had me record as much information
as possible so he could report his numbers. Approximately an hour
later the same two boys rode up on their bikes and told him that
since he shared about his God their mom wanted them to tell us
about their god and one of them then politely handed him the
book of Mormon. As I began taking their names of the record book
he made me stop reasoning: ―They repeated the prayer and that‘s
all that matters. Leave their names on that record.‖

Questions—
 What are your impressions of this incident? Do you think
the boys were actually saved? Why or why not?
 What did the ―evangelism veteran‖ wrong?
 What might you have done differently?
 NOTE: Several years later at another annual meeting of
the SBC the attendees approved a resolution admitting that
the SBC could not account for over half of their reported
membership. (At the time the SBC reported about 16
million members but could only account for approximately
8 million). Their conclusion was that it was due to a lack of
follow up and discipleship. I‘m convinced it was and is due
to a watered down version of the Gospel like the example
above).

3. Mini-Devotion

Galatians 1:6-10
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called
you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-
7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble
you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a
gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be
accursed.
9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is
preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him
be accursed.
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I
trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would
not be a servant of Christ.

―The Gospel announces that Jesus came to acquit the guilty. He

came to judge and be judged in our place. Christ came to satisfy
the deep judgment against us once and for all so that we could be
free from the judgment of God, others and ourselves.‖

- Tullian Tchividjian
 What does the John 3:18 tell us about Christ
acquitting us of our sins?
John 3:18
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not
believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the
name of the only Son of God.

 What does 1 John 4:10 tell us about Christ being

judged in our place?

1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and
sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

 In light of these two verses what (or rather

WHO) is the ―good news?‖

 Discuss the Break Out of Your Comfort Zone Assignment

How did practicing sharing the Gospel with

someone at least once a day last week go for you?

 Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Lesson 6
What Must You Do to be Saved?
(Repent and Believe)

1. Open with prayer

2. Mini Devotion Acts 2:37-38 and Acts 16:30-31

Acts 2:37-38
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said
to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 16:30-31
30 Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be
saved?"
31 And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be
saved, you and your household."

Here’s what you must do in order to receive

the gift of forgiveness of your sins and eternal life
that Christ alone is able to give you.
Repentance and Faith

R Repentance: Repentance is a change of mind about your

sin that eventually leads to a change of behavior.

Illustration:
What is your favorite ice cream?
What if you were enjoying your favorite ice cream
and suddenly you were told that it was tainted with
a deadly toxic?
You would change your mind about it being
good.
What would you do?
You would immediately spit it out!!! (change
your behavior).
That‘s what repentance looks like.

Acts 3:19
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins
may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may
come from the Lord

A And:

F Faith: Faith is more than just belief, it involves trusting in

Jesus alone for salvation.

Illustration:
Trusting in Jesus is similar to trusting in a
parachute to save you. You wouldn‘t just believe that the
parachute existed; you would put it on, entrusting your life to it.
After putting it on and jumping out of the plane you wouldn‘t flap
you arms would you? NO, you would trust in the parachute to save
you, not yourself.
You must tell God that you are trusting in Jesus
Christ; His sinless life, His sacrificial death on the cross and His
rising again from the dead for your salvation.‖

Ephesians 2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of
God--
9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

T Truth: Point to the truth of the Bible and encourage them

to get right with God today.
Have the person repent and believe in their own
words.
Note:
You may repeat a prayer like the one bellow, but pause and
encourage them to say it in their own words either silently
or out loud.

Example:
―God, today I turn away from all of my sins (name as many
as you can).‖
Pause and allow them to say it in their own words.
―This day I put my trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and
Savior. ―
Pause…
―He is the only way for me to be saved.‖
Pause…
―Please forgive me of my sins.‖
Pause…
―Change my heart.‖
Pause…
―Grant me Your gift of eternal life.‖
Pause…
In Jesus name I pray. Amen.‖

3. Close in Prayer

4. Apply the Principles (t-Synch Discussion Group)

 Why is repentance essential for salvation?

 Does repentance mean you no longer struggle with
temptation or sin? Why or why not?
o See 1 John 1:8-9

 What does the James 2:19 tell us about authentic faith?

James 2:19
You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe-
and shudder!

 What does authentic faith look like according to John 3:16?

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

―Saving faith is trust in Jesus Christ as a living person for

forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God.‖
- Wayne Grudem

 Discuss the Break Out of Your Comfort Zone Assignment

from last week

How did practicing sharing the Law and the Gospel

with someone at least once a day last week go for
you?

 Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Obey the following Scripture—

Matthew 28:19
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
How To Share The Gospel
Guide
The Law

 ―Do you think you are good person?‖

o 99% of the time they‘re going to so ―Yes.‖

 Have you heard of the Ten Commandments?

o You shall not lie—
 ―Have you ever lied before?‖ (The answer is
‗Yes‘ and if they say no, their lying)
 ―What does that make you?‖ (A liar)

o You shall not steal—

 ―Have you stolen something before?‖
 ―What does that make you?‖ (A thief)
NOTE:
They might want to argue at this point and say that
everyone has lied and stolen something but these
are little sins that God probably doesn‘t care about.
That‘s why we always ask about the following two
commandments.

o You shall not murder—

 Everyone is going to deny committing
murder but they cannot deny the following
text.
 1 John 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother
is a murderer,
 ―Have you ever hated someone?‖
(Most will admit this.)
 ―Then according to Scripture what
does that make you?‖ (A murderer.)

o You shall not commit adultery—

 Most will deny this but they cannot deny the
following text.
 Matthew 5:27-28
29 You have heard that it was said, 'You
shall not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you that everyone who looks
at a woman with lustful intent has already
committed adultery with her in his heart.
 ―Have you ever lusted after
someone?‖
(This is a no brainer, the answer is
yes)
 According to Jesus what does that
make you?‖ (An adulterer)

Word of Wisdom—
―I do not believe that any man can preach the Gospel who does not
preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the
silken thread of the Gospel through a man‘s heart unless you first
send the needle of the Law to make way for it.‖
—Charles Spurgeon

 ―According to God‘s standard (the Ten Commandments)

are you a good person?‖

NOTE:
Some people are going to say ―Yes‖ for the following
reasons—
 ―God doesn‘t care about my ‗little‘ sins.‖
 ―I‘m still better than most people I know.‖
 ―God knows how sincere I am, He knows my
heart.‖

Use ―The Court‖ illustration to dismiss these

excuses.
―The Court‖
―If you were standing before a judge and you had
been found guilty of committing a crime (breaking
and entering; assault etc) do you think he would
dismiss the charges if you used the same excuses—
 ―I didn‘t steal that much from them.‖
 ―At least I didn‘t physically hurt anyone like
what‘s his name did.‖
 ―I‘m actually a good person judge, please let
me go.‖

o Remind them of God‘s Word—

Romans 3:12
All have turned aside; together they have
become worthless; no one does good, not even
one."

NOTE:
If they still refuse to admit that they are not good and in
fact sinners according to God‘s standard it is essentially impossible
to proceed because they will never see their need for Christ.

Luke 5:32
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to
repentance."

 ―If God were to judge you by His standard (the Ten

Commandments) today, would you go to heaven or hell?‖

NOTE:
At this point if they say ―heaven‖ go back to Romans 3:12
and remind them that even they have admitted that they are no
good.
If they say that they would go to ―hell‖ then it‘s time to
proceed further by asking—

 ―Does that concern you?‖

NOTE:
It‘s important for them to understand the consequences of
their sin.
We can help them do this by briefly describing the harsh
realities of hell.

Scripture consistently describes hell in three ways—

Eternal
Conscious
Suffering

Here‘s how Jesus described hell—

―…(it is an) unquenchable fire.‖ (Eternal)

Mark 9:43

―where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.‖
(Conscious; Suffering)
Mark
9:48

 ―The good news is that you don‘t have to spend an eternity

in hell.‖
―Because of what Jesus did and who He is you can have
eternal life instead of an eternity in hell.‖

Amen.‖
