Math Lesson Plan: L.G. 2.

Class: Algebra II Lvl. 5 Date: 10/24/2022

Objectives: Students can graph a scatterplot, draw a line of best fit, and write equation of line of best fit

Essential Question: How can we collect, organize, and graph data to make a prediction?

Prior Knowledge: Students should be able to make an equation using point-slope form and understand the concept
of correlation given a scatterplot

Materials: Types of Assessment:

Class set of tablets Check for understanding throughout
Dry Erase Markers Have students’ hand in activity sheet
Easers/Rags for markers, Assigned HW for next class
Big Bowl
Bag of Starburst Candy
Ruler
Note sheet (uploaded to canvas)
Guided activity sheet (see attached)
Anticipatory Set (skill check): Writing the equation of a line (point-slope and slope-intercept)

 After prayer, students will work on problems assigned at the board, go over switching between the two equations
1. Write an equation in point-slope form given the following 2 tables, convert to slope-intercept form
2. Given a graph, the equation in point-slope form, convert to slope-intercept form

(5-10 min)
Mini Lesson: Have students open note sheet in canvas (Graphing a linear regression and finding its equation)

 Guided practice on step-by-step compiling data from a table onto a graph (creating a scatter plot), finding the
equation of that graph in point-slope form, converting it into slope-intercept form, and making predictions given that
graph
 Go over how the line created might not makes sense given the context of the problem, but it still would given the
data collected
 Student work on examples together as a class and then on their own, reviewed in class
(15-20 min)
Main Activity: Starburst Scatter plot

 Put Ipads away; and hand out activity sheet

 Students will practice compiling their own data by measuring their hand size and reaching in a bowl and
grabbing as many starbursts as possible (finding the relationship between hand size and no. of starburst)
 They will use this data to make their own graph, draw their line of best fit, and make an equation based
on that line
 They will use this to predict how many starbursts the teacher could grab with one hand
 They will then make a prediction to see how many starbursts the teacher could grab with one hand.
 Go over what other factors make be involved with this relationship, tying in correlation vs. causation
(20-30 min)
 Students will then have time to work on Hw for the rest of class
(Indep. (Dep. What type of correlation is
Variable) Variable)
shown by this graph?

Positive Negative None

Draw a line of best fit on the

graph

 Line should go through

two points already
graphed on the grid
 Line should follow the
same direction as the
data
 The line should have the
same number of points
above and below it
 Lines should be as close
to the data points as
possible

Data Points on line of best fit

Use this equation to determine how many pieces of candy

Mr. Rabedeaux should be able to pick up with one hand.
y 2− y 1
Slope (m ) ¿
x 2−x 1

How many pieces of candy was Mr. Rabedeaux able to pick

up?
Write the equation of the
best fit line in point slope
form?

y− y1 =m(x−x 1)

Rearrange the equation in

slope-intercept form (
