Tips We’ve Learned Along the Way

Capacity in Altspace Worlds

Every world can only support 30 to 50 people (avatars). If you try to get into
a World and it's full, keep trying. People come and go all the time and a space
will open up.

Front Row for Bigger Crowds

Some Worlds are set up on a system called Front Row. This allows
everyone to see the show, however not everyone will be in the same
instance of the show. You can still only have 30 to 50 people in a world. Front
Row creates an identical instance, as many of them as necessary so everyone
can see the show. So....Some of your friends may be in a different instance
than you.

Finding Your Friends

Join Your Friends in a Different Front Row
Instance.
1. Go to Menu and see your friends list.

2. Click on the “GO TO” arrow next to their name.

If there is room in that instance you will be taken to the instance of your
friend. If there is not room, you can send them a message to come join
you.

3. If you set off emojis in one instance, they can be seen in another.
When you see emojis with no people attached to them, scroll your
pointer over them and a name will appear so you know who triggered
them. It is a neat form of interdimensional communication.
Finding Your Friends from Main Playa World.
Method #1

1. Go to HOST TOOLS

2. Click AMPLIFY MY VOICE then call out to your friend.

Everyone will be able to hear you within a very large area around you
on the playa. So don’t leave this feature on, but it’s a good way to find
your friends in a very large space.

If your friends can hear you but still not see you, fly into the air for a
bird’s eye view and start setting off emojis as a sort of smoke
signal/locator beacon.

Go to MENU then click the message next to your friends name and ask
them Where On Playa Are You? (I was told there is a way to create a
custom messages, but I can’t seem to get them to show up in VR)

Method #2
1. Go to MENU

2. Click the “Message” button next to your friend’s name and ask them
“Where On Playa Are You?”

When you arrive in a world you can run your cursor over all the other avatars
and click on them to see their names. Then you will know who your friends
are in the room.
General VR Etiquette
Spawning into a World
When entering (spawning into) a World, immediately move in some
direction. Other people will be spawning into the same spot. It is awkward to
spawn into another person and disorientating. Please immediately move
forward, backward, or to a side to leave the space blank for the next person
arriving in the World

Introduce Yourself
When you walk up to someone or a group of people say, “Hi, I’m __”. It is hard
enough to remember people in real life let alone with avatars that look
extremely similar. And we change our clothes all the time. Announcing
yourself will help others recognize you.

Stay Recognizable
You can change your clothes. Click on Menu>Me>Customize Avatar>Clothing
and have fun. We do not recommend changing your entire avatar because
your friends will have a hard time recognizing you.

Show Appreciation with Emojis

Use your emojis. there is a. If you click on the smiley face in your radial menu
it will open a menu of emojis. This is what you use instead of clapping or
yelling out in agreement. When you are listening to a speaker or in a
discussion, have your emojis ready and click on them. There is even one for
raising your hand so you can be called on to share your thoughts.
Photos
There are two cameras at the bottom of your radial menu. On looks like a
camera and takes forward facing photos. The one that looks like a person in
front of a square takes selfies. To see your photos and share them go to
altvr.com in any browser, log into your account, click on Photos and share
them directly to social media.

When you are recording video and/or live streaming to Facebook, you need
to tell people you are recording. Show respect to fellow participants and not
film anyone without notification. Filming in VR is the same as doing it in real
life, please ALWAYS ask permission and let people know that you are filming
before you do it, especially if live. Streaming is allowed on PERSONAL pages
ONLY. Consent is sexy!

Messages
You can also view all your sent and received messages from your account in
altvr.com. Click on Friends > Messages. All messages will be here until you
delete them.

Personal Health
Physical
Spending a lot of time in VR can cause VR sickness. Symptoms include
general discomfort, headache, stomach awareness, nausea, vomiting, pallor,
sweating, fatigue, drowsiness, disorientation, and apathy. Make sure you give
yourself a break from VR.

A good rule to try and follow is 1 hour out for every 1 hour in. You spend 3
hours in VR, give yourself 3 hours outside in nature and enjoy the sun. Make
sure you drink plenty of water and don't forget to eat.
Mental
And please do not take substances that can alter your consciousness. VR is
consciousness altering enough.

Emotional
If you are having a difficult emotional time and need to speak to someone,
please go to RANGER HQ for assistance. Portals are located at Center Camp,
3:00 and 9:00 Keyholes and at the Base of the Man

Burning Man
Curious about Burning Man? Go to the Embassy of Information About
Burning Man (formerly Everywhere Pavilion). You can find the portal at 6:30
and Esplanade and at the Base of the Man.

Clothing and Other Add-on Items

When you see a menu of items like wings, unicorn horns, clown nose, tutus,
rabbit ears, fire tools, batons, glowy thing…..click on them to add them to your
Avatar. Sometimes they will be there and sometimes not. Hover your cursor
over the item till you see a double ring. Then click the item with your right
trigger finger (index finger). Sometimes they don't work and need to be reset
by the World Builder. It's a learning process. Most of the time, participants will
help in figuring out how to grab them. It's not something that you will find
every time. Unless it's part of a World. The unicorn horns are probably in
Charlie. The tutus are on main playa for Tuesday. I think wings are
Wednesday. Thursday is bunny ears. Those things will be at the main spawn
point. And they only work in the world you got them from. If you leave a world
they don't go with you. To make them bigger click the + and smaller - and the
X to make them go away. Up arrow to raise it and down arrow to lower. You
have to click, wait, click, wait. Don't click too fast or it will do nothing.
Tech Tips for the Best Experience
Oculus Quest
Optimize Display Settings:
1. Go to Menu > Display
2. Set Anti-Aliasing to 8X MSAA
3. Set Render Scale to 1.6

If you have a slower internet connection, change the Anti-Aliasing back to

4X before portaling between worlds. It will take longer to load at 8X. And it
will drain your battery.

Turn on High Resolution Video: Menu > Display > High Resolution Video (at
the bottom)

Desktop
Please Use a Earbuds or Headphones
If you are on a desktop (PC or Mac), please use earbuds or headphones. If you
do not use headphones you will create an echo and strange “ear moths” for
everyone else and they will not be able to understand you or anyone else in the
virtual space.
Troubleshooting
I’ve got flickering black squares appearing in
my headset.
This happens sometimes with oculus. Tap the power button so you only turn
off your screen, wait a beat, then turn it back on. The black squares will
resolve.
