AS & A PHYSICS (GRADE 12) Module #2.

1
WORKSHEET #1: KINEMATICS
9/16/22
Villas, Kerby P. (STEM12)

General Directions: Solve the word problems below. Indicate the given
values, what to find, formula and the solution for each problem.
(5 pts. each)

I. SPEED PROBLEMS
#1. You arrive in my class 45 seconds after leaving math which is 90 meters
away. How fast did you travel?

We have to find speed?

Speed = distance/time
hence speed is = 90/45
Answer: = 2m/s

#2. You need to get to class, 200 meters away, and you can only walk in the
hallways at about 1.5 m/s. (if you run any faster, you’ll be caught for
running). How much time will it take to get to your class?

Distance = Speed x Time

200m = 1.5m/s * t
now we solve for t to get the time in seconds
200 = 1.5*t (we want to get by itself, so let's get rid of the *1.5 by dividing both
sides by 1.5)

200/1.5 = t

Answer: time = 133.33 seconds

#3. If you shout into the Grand Canyon, your voice travels at the speed of
sound (340m/s) to the bottom of the canyon and back, and you hear an echo.
How deep is the Grand Canyon at a spot where you can hear your echo 5.2
seconds after you shout?

D = 340 m/s * 5.2 s

= 1768 m
- However, this distance is round trip, down into the canyon and back.
So it must be cut in half.

Answer: 884 meters

#4. A person jogs 4.0 km in 32 minutes, then 2.0 km in 22 minutes, and

finally 1.0 km in 16 minutes. What is the jogger’s average speed in km per
minute?

Speed = distance/time
S = 4km + 2km + 1km / 32min + 22min + 16min
= 7km / 70min
Answer: 0.1km /min

II. ACCELERATION PROBLEMS

#1. A driver travelling at 70 km/hr tries to stop the car and finds that the
brakes have failed. The emergency brake is then pulled and the car comes to
a stop in 120 m. Find the car’s deceleration.

First we must convert 70 km/hr to m/s.

70 km/hr × 1 hr / 3600 s × 1000 m / 1 km = 19.44 m/s
Vi = 19.44 m/s
Vf = 0 m/s comes to stop

d = 120 m
a = unknown
Formula I used a = -Vi² / 2d since Vf = 0 m/s.
a = - Vi² / 2d
= - (19.44 m/s)² / 2 × 120 m
= - 377.9136 s² / 240 m
Answer: The car acceleration is - 1.57 m/s² *negative since it decelerates

#2. How long will it take a car to accelerate from 15.2 m/s to 23.5 m/s if the
car has an average acceleration of 3.2 m/s 2 ?

the time required to accelerate?

Initial velocity = 15.2 m/s
Final velocity = 23.5 m/s

Change in velocity

= Δv

= 23.5 m/s - 15.2 m/s

= 8.3 m/s

Acceleration = a = 3.2 m/s²

Answer: The time required = 2.59 sec

#3. A train moves from rest to a speed of 25 m/s in 30.0 seconds. What is its
Acceleration?

Acceleration of train =?
The acceleration is meter/second²
Acceleration of train = (Final velocity - Initial velocity) ÷ Time
Acceleration of train = v-u / t
Acceleration of train = 25/30
Answer: Acceleration of train = ⅚ m/s² or 0.833 m/s²
