WORKSHEET#2: FORCES AND NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION
Activity #4 9/23/22
a. Throwing a ball
II. Identify the law of motion that is illustrated in the following situations. Explain your
answer. (2 pts. each)
#2. A car still moves for a short period even after the brakes have been applied.
= Law of Inertia
#3. A follow-through is needed when a golfer hits the ball with a golf club.
= Law of Interaction
#5. A cigarette vendor has to move with the bus as he jumps off the bus.
= Law of Law of Inertia
III. Solve the following problems completely. (3 pts. each)
Formula:
F net = ma
Where:
F net = net force
m = mass
a = acceleration
a. A worker pushes on a crate, and it experiences a net force of 300 N. If the crate
moves with an acceleration of 0.750 m/s 2 , what is its mass?
F = 300N
a = 0.750 m/s²
F = ma
replacing the variables
300 = m x 0.75
m = 300 x 100/ 75
m = 300 x 4/3
m = 100 x 4
My Anwer: m = 400 kg
b. A bicycle and a rider together have a mass of 90 kg. If the bicycle moves at 6.0
m/s, how much force is needed to bring it to a stop in 5.0 s?
Acceleration:
a = (v-u)/t
a = (6-0)/5
a = 6/5 m/s²
Force :
F = ma
F = 90 × 6/5
F = 18 × 6
My Answer: F = 108 N
IV. Write two situations that you observe around which demonstrate each of Newton’s
three laws of motion. (total = 6 pts.)
1st law
a. Just like in Catapult the lever stops but the object keeps moving.
b. If you are driving a car and hits another car the car stops but the people inside
keep moving forward. That is because the outside force is acted on the car and not
the person inside.
2nd law
a. In a race a racing car turns into a green light.
3rd law
a. A person using a hammer to push a nail.
1st law
a. Airbag technology in vehicles
b. Inertial navigational systems used by aircrafts
2nd law
a. Elevators or Lifts
b. Ropes
3rd law
a. Wheels and lever
b. Gym equipment that is pulley based
