ACEM AND MINIMIZING LEARNERS ABSENTEEISM

IN GRADE SIX YELLOW GREEN

AN INNOVATION

II. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

One of the most embarrassing experiences of teachers is dealing with learner

absenteeism. We prepare lesson plans with the objective that 100% of the class will learn

from the day’s classroom activities. And it is most fulfilling when all pupils are present on

that day and the days thereafter to ensure maximum learning.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to achieve a perfect attendance among my pupils. No

matter how interesting and well-prepared my lessons and teaching materials are, there are

bound to be pupils who miss out the day’s activities, willingly or unwillingly. This is

particularly true to those of us teaching in the public schools. We all know that almost half or

maybe majority of our students come from families whose meager income is just enough to

put food on their tables.

Absenteeism, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary means chronic absence. In the

context of the school it is the habitual or intentional failure from going to school. It cannot be

denied that every now and then, pupils may miss some school activities and lessons. But it

becomes a problem if the pupil will be away from school for many days.

School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators, teachers, parents and

the society in general, as well as for the pupils in particular. Unaccepted absence has a

negative effect on peer relationship which could cause absence. According to Malcolm,

Wilson, Davidson and Kirk (2003) teachers identified effects of absenteeism on children as:

academic under- achievement, difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom, loss

of confidence. Also, prolonged absence can have harmful effects for the child in later life.

Students who are absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school early.

With much desire to help the pupils minimize or eradicate absenteeism, the proponent

tried to conceptualize of a strategy by which she can minimize if not to eradicate

absenteeism. This innovation is entitled Awarding Of Certificates Every Month (ACEM).

III. OBJECTIVE AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

This study aims to minimize if not to eradicate the learners’ absenteeism in Grade Five

pupils of Bannawag Integrated School.

Furthermore, the research tests the effectiveness of using ACEM in minimizing the

learner’s absenteeism.

IV. TARGET AND BENEFICIARIES

The target beneficiaries are the Grade Five Pupils of Bannawag Integrated School.

V. PROJECT DESCRIPTION, INTERVENTIONS, METHODS AND STRATEGIES

Awarding of Certificate Every Month (ACEM) is an intervention material which aims

to minimize if not to eliminate absenteeism among pupils. This intervention is the awarding

of Certificate of Perfect Attendance to every learner who has perfected his attendance for the

month and the awarding is done every last Friday of the month. In the checking of

attendance, the teacher prepared an attendance sheet for the pupils to write their name as they

enter the room in the morning and in the afternoon. Aside from the attendance sheet being
filled up by the pupils, the teacher also checks the attendance before and after classes in the

morning and in the afternoon to prove that the pupils are really present.
