Abstraction
(___ minutes) Kinds of Sets

Sets – maybe classified according to the number of elements. These sets

are empty sets, singleton set, finite set, infinite set, universal set, and
power set.

Empty Set is a set that has no elements. It is also described as a set

whose elements of any other set including itself.
The empty set is represented by the symbol Ø or {}. Its
cardinal number is written as:

n(Ø) = 0

Example 1.1 Which of the following is an empty set?

a. A = {x:4 < x < 5, x is a natural number}
b. B = { x:3 < x < 5, x is a natural number }

Given:
a. A = {x:4 < x < 5, x is a natural number}
b. B = { x:3 < x < 5, x is a natural number }

Find: empty set

Solution:
a. Set A indicates that x is a natural number greater than 4 but less
than 5. This means that x is a natural number between 4 and 5.

Since there is no natural numberthat exists between 4 and 5, then

A = {} or Ø

b. Set B tells that x is a natural number greater than 3 but less than
5. This indicates that natural number that x represents is 4. So,
B = {4}
Therefore, set B is not an empty set. The only empty set is set A.

Singleton Set – is a set that contains only one element. Set B in example
1.1 is a singleton set because it has only one element.

B = { x:3 < x < 5, x is a natural number }

B = {4}

Example 1.2 Write the roster set notation for a set of even prime
number. What type of set does it represent?

Given: A = {x|x is an even prime number}

Find:
a. Roster notation of the given set
b. Type of set

Solution: The only even prime number is 2. All the other prime numbers
are odd numbers.

a. A = {2}
b. A is a Singleton set

Finite Set – is a set which describes exactly how many elements it

contains or set in which number of elements are limited and can be
counted.

Example 1.3 Write the roster set notation for a set of composite numbers
less than 10. Explain why the set is a finite set.

Given: A = {x|x is is a composite number, x < 10}

Find:
a. Roster notation of the given set
b. Reason why it is a finite set

Solution:

a. A = {4, 6, 8}
b. The set is a finite set because there is a given requirement that
limits the number of elements.

Infinite Set – is a set which number of elements are unlimited and

cannot be counted.

Example 1.4 Write the roster set notation for a set of skip counting
numbers by 10. Explain why the set is an infinite set.

Given: A = {10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60…}

Find: The reason why it is an infinite set.

Solution: The set is an infinite set because the number of elements is

unlimited. Skip counting by 10 can continue on and on (as indicated in
the ellipsis…) without end.

Universal Set – is a set which contains all the elements of the other
given sets or all elements in consideration. It is represented by the
symbol U.
Example 1.5 Write the universal set for the following sets: A = {2, 4, 6}
B = {6, 8, 10} C = {2, 6}

Given: : A = {2, 4, 6} B = {6, 8, 10} C = {2, 6}

Find: The universal set for sets A, B, C.

Solution: The universal set for sets A, B, C is written as: U = {2, 4, 6, 8,

10}.

Note that sets A, B, and C are now subsets of the universal set. These are
expressed as:
A ⊆ U, B ⊆ U, C ⊆ U or
U ⊇ A, U ⊇ B, U ⊇ C

Example 1.6 If the set of all months of the year is a universal set, give 3
possible subsets of this universal set?

Given: : U = {all months of the year}

Find: The subsets of U.

Solution: There are 12 months of the year, therefore the universal set is
written us:

U = {January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August,

September, October, November, December}

The 3 possible subsets of U are:

A = {all months of the year having exacly 30 days}
= { April, June September, November}
B = {all months of the year having exactly 31 days}
= {January, March, May, July, August, October, December}
C = {all months of the year having less than 30 days}
= {February}

Power Set – is the set of all subsets of a given set. The power set of any
set A is denoted by the symbol: P(A), and by the notation:

P(A) = {x|x ⊆ A}

Example 1.7 What is the power set of A = {2, 4, 6}?

Given: : A = {2, 4, 6}

Find: P(A)

Solution: List down all the possible subsets of A.

{Ø}, {2}, {4}, {6}, {2, 4}, {4, 6}, {A}

The power set of set A may be written as:

P(A) = {{Ø}, {2}, {4}, {6}, {2, 4}, {4, 6}, {A}}

Practice Exercise
1. Identify what kind of set is represented by the following:
a. A = {x|x is a continent in the world}
b. B = {3, 6, 9, 12, 15…}
c. C = {x:x is an integer; 3 < x < 5}

2. Using a diagram, illustrate a universal set.

3. Provide examples for the following sets:

a. Empty set
b. Singleton set
c. Power set
