Lecture 5: Special Sentence Structures--The Case of the Sentence Rejoinders

Sentence REJOINDERS help you avoid the repetition of words in the sentence. There are SIX sentence
structure, as follows:

The FIRST Sentence Structure

The SECOND Sentence Structure


Affirmative Statement + AND SO + V + S
I should study and so should you.

Mr. Lopez was there and so was Mr. Reyes.

We have traveled and so have they.

The THIRD Sentence Structure


Negative Statement + AND + S + V + NOT EITHER
Pepe didn’t come today and Tony didn’t either.

I can’t go to the dance and she can’t either.

Linda won’t be there and Eva won’t either.

The FOURTH Sentence Structure


Negative Statement + AND + NEITHER + V + S
I shouldn’t be absent and neither should you.

Your answer isn’t right and neither is mine.

Carlos can’t sing and neither can Isidro.

The FIFTH Sentence Structure


Affirmative Statement + BUT + Subject + Verb + NOT
Belen was there but Enrica wasn't.

They left early but you didn’t.

Johnny will help us but Rene won’t.

The SIXTH Sentence Structure


Negative Statement + BUT + Subject + Verb
Luisa wasn’t there but Virginia was.

They didn’t go home but we did.

Rene won’t help us but Johnny will.

REMEMBER these Four Specific RULES:


Firstly, when a verb consisting of an auxiliary and a principal verb is used in the first statement, ONLY
the auxiliary is used in the second statement.
Secondly, when any verbs other than to be are used in the present or past form, do, does, or did is
used in the second statement.
Thirdly, in the second statement, an inversion of the subject and verb occurs, as in so have they or
neither is mine.
Finally, NEVER forget to affix the appropriate PUNCTUATION marks.

Example 3:

17. Ofelia passed the examination. Sandra didn’t pass the examination.

18. This beige dress is stylish. That blue dress isn’t stylish.

19. Roy has a permanent job. Julio doesn’t have a permanent job.

20. The train usually leaves on time. The bus doesn’t usually leave on time.

21. We are ready to leave. Our companions aren’t ready to leave.

22. Students rushed out of the room. The teacher didn’t rush out of the room.

23. My classmates were impressed with the speaker. I was not impressed with the speaker.

24. You like spicy dishes. I don’t like spicy dishes.

25. Emma is popular in the campus. Rosita isn’t popular in the campus.

Example 4:
I don’t play the piano. My sister plays the piano.
I don’t play the piano, but my sister does.
26. This magazine isn’t worth buying. That book is worth buying.

27. Arturo isn’t a scholar. Ramon is a scholar.

28. You didn’t work late last night. I worked late last night.

29. Lolita will not graduate this summer. Florida will graduate this summer.

30. I haven’t finished my research paper. Ruth has finished her research paper.

31. We can’t stay till twelve o’clock. The boys can stay till twelve o’clock.

32. She isn’t interested in gardening. Her mother is interested in gardening.

33. The club members aren’t helpful. The officers are helpful.

34. The judge doesn’t believe him guilty. His own friends believe him guilty.

35. They don’t work hard. Their parents work hard.
