“How To Translate on Your iPhone Without Installing Other Apps”

By Andrea Adelle Gabot

As the world opens back up, visiting other countries is slowly becoming part of our lives
again. One of the most challenging parts of travel is communication—especially when you don’t
speak the language of your host country. Most iOS users install different translation apps to
hurdle the language barrier, but did you know that your Apple device already has a robust
translation program?

The Translate App has been a built-in iOS app since the launch of iOS 14 in 2020. It has
11 supported languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Arabic, French, Italian, German,
Portuguese, Korean, Spanish, and Russian. Each of these supported languages has its own
dictionary, so you won’t end up trying to decipher confusing translations. The app’s inclusion
has also improved other in-app translations for iOS. Here are convenient ways you can use
translation services on your Apple device:

Translate App

Go into the Translate App, tap the Translation button and select which of the 11
supported languages you want to translate between. For voice translations, tap the microphone
icon, say the word or phrase, and tap go. For text translations, type a word or phrase in the text
box and tap go. If you wish to play the audio of your translations, tap the play icon at the
bottom of the translation box. The best part is you can use all these features in offline mode!
Just download any of the supported languages and translate any time on the go.

Pro Tip: You don’t need to keep translating the same thing! There are two ways to take
a second look at already translated texts, images, or voice clips. Either save the translation as a
favorite by tapping the star icon or swipe down to view your most recent translation history.

Real-Time Conversations

Have real-time conversations without having to type anything in or constantly tapping

the mic icon between speakers. You can even change the screen orientation for more
accessible interactions! Tap on “Side by Side” for translations to show in text bubbles, or tap on
“Face to Face” for half the screen to flip around and face the other speaker.

Translate In-App

Translating from other apps has never been easier. Just select any text you want to be
translated and tap the translate button. There are options to replace your original text with the
translated text and copy and paste translations to bring them to other apps. These features are
available for Mail, Messages, Safari, and other supported third-party apps.

Translate Text on Images

Directly translate text through your camera app without taking an actual photo! Just
make sure that the text appears within the frame and wait for the yellow box to appear around
the text. When it does, tap on the icon with three lines and tap translate.

Knowing everything that your device can do will help you make the most out of your
travel experience. Don’t forget to check out Make Use Of for more useful tips to maximize your
