SECTION A :( 40 MARKS)
1. A particle of mass 2kg rests in limiting equilibrium on a rough plane
inclined at 300 to the horizontal. Find the value of the coefficient of friction.
2. A continuous random variable X has a cumulative distribution function:
0, 𝑥 ≤ 0,
3
𝐹(𝑥) = {𝜆𝑥 , 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 4
1, 𝑥≥4
Find the:
a) value of the constant 𝜆.
b) probability density function (𝑥)
3. Events A and B are independent. P (A)= 𝑥, P (B)= 𝑥 + 0.2 and P (AUB)=
0.65.
Find the value of 𝑥
4. A body of mass 4kg is moving with initial velocity of 5𝑚𝑠 −1 on a plane.
The kinetic energy of the body is reduced to 16𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠 in a distance of 40𝑚.
Find the deceleration of the body.
5. The probability that a patient suffering from a certain disease recovers is 0.4.
If 15 people contracted the disease, find the probability that:
a) more than 9 will recover.
b) between 5 and 8 will recover.

6. Given that 𝑦 = + 𝑥 and 𝑥 = 2.4 correct to one decimal place, find the
𝑥
limits with which 𝑦 lies.
7. The table below shows the value of a function 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥 1.8 2.0 2.2 2.4
𝑓(𝑥) 0.532 0.484 0.436 0.384
Use linear interpolation to find the value of:
a) 𝑓(2.08)
b) 𝑥 corresponding to 𝑓(𝑥) = 0.5
8. In a square ABCD, three forces of magnitudes 4N, 10N and 7N act a long
sides AB, AD and CA respectively. Their directions are in order of the
letters. Find magnitude of the resultant force.

SECTION B (60 MARKS)
9. (a).Draw on the same axes the graphs of the curves 𝑦 = 2 − 𝑒 −𝑥 and
𝑦 = √𝑥
for 2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5
(b).Determine from your graphs the interval within which the root of the
equation 𝑒 −𝑥 + √𝑥 − 2 = 0 lies. Hence, use Newton-Raphson’s Method to
find the root of the equation correct to 3 decimal places.
10.The diagram below shows a 12kg mass on a horizontal rough plane. The 6kg
and 4kg are on rough planes inclined at angles 600 and 300 respectively. The
masses are connected to each other by light inextensible strings passing over
light smooth fixed pulleys A and B.

The planes are equally rough with co-efficient of friction . If the system is
12
released from rest, find the;
a) acceleration of the system.
b) tension in the strings.
11. a) Use the Trapezium rule with 6-ordinates to estimate the value of
𝜋
∫0 (𝑥 + sin 𝑥)𝑑𝑥, correct to three decimal places.
2
𝜋
b) i. Evaluate ∫0 (𝑥 + sin 𝑥)𝑑𝑥, correct to three decimal places.

a) Find the;
i. value of K.
ii. expression for the probability density function (𝑝. 𝑑. 𝑓) of X.
b) Calculate the;
i. mean of X
ii. 𝑃(𝑋 < 1.5⁄𝑋 > 0.5)
16.A lorry starts from a point A and moves a long a straight horizontal road
with a constant acceleration 2 𝑚𝑠 −2 . At the same time a car moving with a
speed of 20 𝑚𝑠 −1 and a constant acceleration of 3 𝑚𝑠 −2 behind the point A
and moving in the same direction as the lorry. Find;
a) how far from A the car overtakes the lorry.
b) the speed of the lorry when it is being overtaken.
