EXPERIMENT 1
Specific Gravity Determination

Data & Results:

1. Sample:
HYDROMETER

WATER OBSERVATION

After placing the water into the graduated cylinder and

allowing the hydrometer to settle and stop bobbing before
taking a reading. We have red the specific gravity at eye
level. It resulted that water has specific gravity of 1.1
Hydrometer - an instrument used to determine specific
gravity
GRADUATED CYLINDER

Graduated cylinder - used to measure the volume of a

liquids, chemicals or solutions during the lab daily work.

OLIVE OIL

The next one is the olive oil. Same as the water after we
placing the olive oil into the graduated cylinder and
allowing the hydrometer to settle and stop bobbing
before taking a reading, we have red the specific gravity
at eye level. It resulted that olive oil has specific gravity
of 0.91
ALCOHOL

After that we have the alcohol. Same as the recent

procedure we placed the alcohol into the graduated
cylinder and allowing the hydrometer to settle and stop
bobbing before taking a reading. We have red the
specific gravity at eye level and it result that alcohol has
specific gravity of 0.88

SALT SOLUTION
After placing the salt solution into the graduated cylinder
and allowing the hydrometer to settle and stop bobbing
before taking a reading. We have red the specific gravity
at eye level. It resulted that salt solution has specific
gravity of 1.1
1. WATER

Water derived from home water filters had an

approximate pH of 7.5 as same as tap water.
However , in this experiment the pH of the water
ranges 6.1-6.9

2.SOAP SOLUTION

Soap or detergent share a critical chemical property

–they are surfactants. In other words they reduce
the surface tension of water. It was observed that
the pH of the soap solution ranges 6.9—7.1
3.ALCOHOL

The pH value of alcohol is 7.33. Alcohol cannot be defined as acidic or alkaline, rather defined as amphioprotic
because the nature of the bond between carbon and hydroxyl group is non-ionic but slightly polar in nature. In
this measure, the pH of the alcohol ranges 6.5-6.9

4. SALT SOLUTION
The pH of the solution containing 0.1N NaOH solution is usually
12, but in this experiment it is discerned that its pH is 6.5
Without Ice cube
In this experiment we put some water inside the steam
bath and at same time in the beaker. We placed the
beaker inside the steam bath and covered it with a
watch glass. We waited for the water to boil through the
help of the electric stove. We have observed in this
experiment that while the water is boiling inside the
beaker, we saw that the water inside of it was
evaporating that causes moisture inside the beaker and
on the watch glass.

With ice cube

We have observed that when a piece of ice cube is

placed on top of a watch glass the ice cube
immediately melted. While the steam bath is boiling,
the portion of water inside the beaker remains in its
water level. Since the volume of ice is greater than
the water, after melting the volume of the piece will
decrease and the water level inside the beaker will
remain the same.
REMARKS OR CONCLUSION :
Beginning with the first of the three experiments, which involved determining the specific gravity of each sample, we
came to the conclusion that this was not a simple task and should not be taken for granted since it allowed us to
learn more about the concentration of solutions and gauge the degree of uniformity between samples.

Hence, when determining pH, the pH value represents how much H+ has dissociated from the molecules in a
solution. The concentration of H+ ions in the solution increases with decreasing pH, making the acid stronger. The
concentration of H+ ions in the solution decreases as pH increases, making the acid weaker.

The melting and evaporation are examples of phase change, which occur when matter changes but chemical bonds
are not broken or produced. And that brings us to our last conclusion from the experiment of states of matter.
