A New Two-Way Artificial Boundary Condition for Wave Propagation

Introduction

Need of Artificial Boundary Conditions

Infinite/semi-infinite spatial domains.

One-way ABCs: allow outward going
waves to travel across the ABC without
bouncing back into the spatial domain.

Two-way ABCs: same as one-way ABCs
plus the capability of imposing ingoing
waves.

Conclusions

A new two-way artificial boundary
condition (2wABC) for wave
propagation was formulated for the
mixed wave equation.

The new 2wABC was tested analytically
under three conditions: one-way,
Dirichlet & two-way.

The new 2wABC is thought to be simple
to implement. 12

Conclusions

The new 2wABC does not require any
non-linear or iterative solver.

Next step: implement it into our HPC
distributed memory FEM code to see it
working computationally.
