Acceptability of Banana (Musa acuminate x Musa

balbisiana) Stalk as a Key Component in Making

Biodegradable Cups

Objectives:

● To explain the composition of banana stalk that makes it possible to become biodegradable cups.

● To devise biodegradable cups made up of banana stalk.

● To propose new utilization of banana stalks that usually ends up in trash.

Rationale:

Increasing amount of waste is one of the worsening problems in the world and up until now, experts are still in

depth study on how to massively eliminate it. Approximately, the Philippines produces about 43,684 tons of waste daily

and 4,609 tons of this came from the single use of plastics (PSN, 2019). In line with this, the researchers aim to develop

a drinking cup that is made up of banana husk that is biodegradable in nature. Its goal is to help decrease potential

synthetic waste specifically from single-used cups that eventually end up in the landfill, and also produce cups that easily

decompose and sooner become nutrients to soil.

Furthermore, the researchers will utilize developmental method of research. Therefore, at the end of this

research, it is expected to have a tangible product which is biodegradable cups from banana stalks that can be further

enhanced through probation of effectiveness by other researchers.

Development of Paving Block using Volcanic Ash as

Key Component

Objectives:

● To analyze the workability of volcanic ash as an additive in paving blocks.

● To produce economic and environmental-friendly, and stronger ceramics.

● To make good use of volcanic ash on the fresh, strength, and durable properties of ceramics.

● To develop standards and specification for the use of the volcanic ash as ceramic in terracotta production so

that utilization of it will be maximized.

Rationale:

January 12 2020, when Philippines was shocked by a dangerous volcanic activity of Taal Volcano located at Taal

Batangas. Many towns were affected by a massive ash fall including Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and even Metro Manila.

Roads, plants, houses were all covered with volcanic ashes. A large amount of ash was collected by residents after

cleaning the streets and roofs. Now, numerous sacks of those volcanic ashes were dumped.

To maximize the existence of vast volcanic ashes, the researchers will conduct a study about using volcanic ash a

paving block. This is a developmental type of research and its main purpose is to recycle the ashes to make terracotta style

paving block. This study will be focused on analyzing the components of volcanic ashes, assessing its effectiveness.

The Difference Between Powdered from Decocted (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric Root in Terms of Its Curcumin Concentration Level

Objectives:

● To know the difference between powdered from decocted (curcuma longa) turmeric root in terms of its

curcumin concentration level

● To explain the compositions of a turmeric root and the nutrients it can supply the body.

● To understand the efficacy of herbal tea on both powdered and decocted form.

Rationale:

Turmeric has been a staple natural remedy on ailments even at the ancient times due to its numerous health

benefits as it is rich in a wide range of anti-oxidants and phytochemicals. Due to its easy accessibility, turmeric has been

served in multiple ways. However, Spritzler (2019) stated that although cooking improves digestion and the absorption of

many nutrients, it may reduce levels of some vitamins and minerals.

This research aims to describe the difference of curcumin concentration in a powdered and decocted turmeric

root. It is a descriptive research that will utilize a quantitative approach and pure experimental type of study. According to

Blackstad (2018), a descriptive research design is a scientific method which involves observing and describing the

behavior of a subject without influencing it in any way. Thus, this research will solely observe and gather data to present

an output.
