Home Work–1 Bearing Capcity

Q-1) Determine the ultimate net soil bearing capacity for the raft foundation
shown in Figure (1). [Answer: 160 kPa].

Q-2) Find the ultimate bearing capacity for the footing shown in Figure (2). Use the
general bearing capacity equation. [Answer: 2683.8 kPa].

Q-3) Refer to the underground concrete water tank shown in Figure (3) , the
measured standard penetration number at mid-depth of the influence zone equals
(8).
A. Find the net allowable bearing capacity for (1.5 in.) tolerable settlement using
Peck, Hanson and Thornburn method. [Answer: 79 kPa].
B. If the tank is empty, find the safety factor against uplift failure. [Answer: 2.18].
