Baby car seat sales increased by 95% in the last 2 months

of 2019

10/22/22, 10:51 PM Baby car seat sales increased by 95% in the last 2 months of 2019

“Compared to October 2019, the purchase of baby car seats increased by 95% and 106% in the month of November and
December 2019 respectively based on the transactions made at marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Taobao and Qoo10 via
ShopBack platforms,” he said.

According to Han, 99% of the transactions were done through mobile app and the data also showed that 70% of the parents
bought their baby car seats during the 11.11 sale, and close to 60% bought it during the 12.12 campaign period in December.

“Malaysian parents took advantage of year-end sales like 11.11 and 12.12 to purchase baby car seats in view of the new car seat
regulations,” he said.

He added that a baby car seat can cost between RM100 and RM1,000.

Therefore, any parent would welcome any form of savings that are offered by e-commerce platforms and cashback services
that ShopBack provides.

“Last year, Lazada even offered double cashback during 11.11, where parents could earn up to 10% cashback on their purchase,”
he said.

However, for this year, Han said it is still early to tell if the trend will persist.

“From what we can see, the number of baby car seat-related keyword searches is still going up.

“It could be due to Chinese New Year preparations or purely an upgrade of better car seats in the New Year,” he said.

The announcement that child safety seats would be made compulsory under the Child Restraint System (CRS) was made in
October 2019 by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

According to Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research studies, 58% of children and infants passed away from road accidents
where CRS held the potential of reducing risk of injury or death by up to 70%.

The child car seats could reduce risks between 54% and 80% for children aged between one to four years old, while 59% risks
reduction for children aged between four to seven years old.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is keeping a close eye on the sales of child
car seats to ensure products that are offered online meet the necessary safety standards.

There were reports stating that the car seats were being sold for as low as RM18 to RM39.90. Parents are also advised to make
wise decisions when it comes to making purchases, while prioritising safety aspects.

The Transport Minister Anthony Loke was also reported as saying that no summons will be issued to those who fail to comply
with the mandatory child seat use for the first six months of the new ruling.

Instead of summons, the drivers will be issued warnings and reminders to instal the seats and no import duty would be placed
on the seats, while excise fee has been slashed down to 5% from 10% to encourage further use.
