Group 3: Introduction Draft

A student's active participation may be determined by various factors, including their

involvement in specific assessments and classroom activities, interactions with peers, and

interactions with the teaching staff. Some problems must be solved to improve one's ability to

engage in various educational activities. Why do some students choose not to participate in a

course when they are not actively engaged and motivated?

A student may not pay close attention in class for many reasons, but in a group of peers and

classmates, they are more likely to participate actively. The objective of the study is to determine

how active learning and the school environment are connected. A student's active engagement is

greatly influenced by the school environment; if the student does not feel at ease there, it may

have an impact on the engagement process. Thus, this has an impact on student engagement in

one's engagement. Active learning provides the connectivity of a student to his or her class which

makes a student more engaged in participating and interacting with the people he or she is with.

According to Fredrick, Blumenfeld, and Paris, (2004) engagement is seen to be flexible,

responsive to semantic information, and adaptable to environmental change. As academic

motivation and success have decreased, the idea of school engagement has come under intense

pressure that some students do not engage in a certain course in their school. In addition, the

environment of the school that surrounds the student can be a part of their interest and

engagement to enhance their learning. Thus, this study will focus on the active learning for the

students and the school environment that can be a reason for their engagement in school.
The study will take place at Baliuag University located at 1069 Gil Carlos street Baliuag,

Bulacan under the supervision of Ms. Ercy Nicole Mabalot. Baliuag University was founded in

1925 by Domingo "Tatang" Santiago Sr., as the Baliuag Institute, a modest high school with an

enrollment of 75 students, has significantly grown in many more ways than one.

The researchers will not partake in any events whatsoever that may occur in leaving the school

grounds of said school and only perform survey questionnaires inside the school grounds. Active

learning environments provide collaborative learning spaces that encourage student collaboration

and peer teaching. Active learning is designed to facilitate working in small groups and allow

instructors to guide students interactively during the activity. Offering students new opportunities

to hone their collaboration skills, build trust and respect the perspectives of others. Studies show

that engaging in learning environments increases student attention and focus, promotes

meaningful learning experiences, improves student performance, and motivates students to

practice critical thinking at higher levels.

Learning facilitates the students to achieve knowledge and skill through instruction or studying

(Merriam-Webster, (n.d.). According to Bonwell and Eison (1991) cited by Brame (2016),

Active Learning involves the students participating in activities that require their thinking skills.

Furthermore, they highlighted the students' explorations of themselves and a wide range of

activities that falls under active learning. In addition, active learning engages the students to

actively participate in group work requiring their high order of thinking (Freeman et al., 2014).

Some active learning strategies can be concluded by students in class or outside setting, students

working with one another or in groups and as individuals, and either with or without the use of
technology (Eison, 2010). Furthermore, active learning can result in better learning outcomes

that give motivation to the students (Han, 2021).

School is the second home of a child's life where they can learn and master their skills apart

from their real home. According to Narad & Abdullah (2016), the School Environment shares an

important role in a student's life as it can improve their overall development. School

Environment refers to the facilities around the school that provide support for the students'

physical and mental health support and safety that includes the rules and regulations of the

school and the availability of services in promoting the well-being of the students (Zais, 2011;

Narad & Abdullah, 2016 cited by Lawrence & Vimala, 2012). School Environment might greatly

affect the students' engagement and whether they feel belongingness to the institution they are in.

The student's engagement in their school improves the value of their learning which can refer

to their sense of belonging at school, using critical thinking ability, developing positive growth,

and achieving better academically (Han, 2021). In addition, Students Engagement can also vary

from the teachers' way of teaching based on quality and enjoyment (Hattie, 2011 cited by Han,

2021). There are three types of engagement as stated by Fredricks et al. (2004) cited by Abla &

Fraumeni (2019), including Behavioral Engagement where students participate in activities while

observing the community norms, Emotional Engagement which varies from the students'

feelings, and Cognitive Engagement that pertains to the ability to engage and facilitate self-

learning. The student's engagement in class will determine if they really are learning. Thus, the

aim of the study is to prove whether the students' engagement is influenced by the given

variables.
Students' engagement is the basis of whether the school environment and active learning

methods are effective. The researchers will determine if the student is active in learning which

could result in their engagement in the classroom. This will also help to know if the school

environment has affected and influenced the engagement of the students. Students can occur in

any style of a classroom, according to (ALCs). The school environment is a big help in

encouraging and motivating the students to engage, which will lead them to become active

learners in their classrooms. This research is important to do so to help the schools and teachers

improve the environment and, in addition, might also help the teachers in teaching to help their

students to be more active and engaged in class.

Given the confluence of factors contributing to the influence of active learning and the school

environment on students' engagement, their impact and relationship with each other are currently

uncertain. The possible correspondence between the influence of active learning and the school

environment on students' engagement is a matter of great concern to us. This study aims to

determine whether the influence of active learning and the school environment significantly

helps student engagement. It seeks to determine the possible correspondence between the

variables and to clarify whether the influence of active learning and the school environment

equates to students' engagement. As a result, this research will tackle if the students' engagement

has a connection to active learning and their school environment.
