viii XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

1. Product Overview

This section provides a "big picture" of the XSIS Automated

Color Quality Suite (ACQS).

Automated Color Quality Suite Overview

The XSIS ACQS feature provides the Operator with a suite of

tools to ensure the Press is ready to print colors. The suite
includes the following options:
• Automated Color Calibration
• Spot Color Calibration
• Advanced Profiling

Automated Color Calibration

This feature provides you with the ability to calibrate the Press
from the FreeFlow Print Server Graphical User Interface
(FreeFlow GUI) without feeding calibration charts (also known
as "calibration targets") manually. You can do this "now" or at
practically any time via a schedule. This option helps you
maintain tighter control over the output of your system.

Spot Color Calibration

This feature provides you with the ability to automatically
check the quality of a particular color. You can use Spot Color
Calibration to test and/or fine-tune the accuracy of particular
PANTONE® colors before the job prints.

Advanced Profiling
This feature provides you with the ability to create a custom
profile. This allows you to further fine-tune your print jobs
beyond what is provided by the standard profiles in FreeFlow
Print Server.

1. Product Overview

Stock assignment

You must assign stocks to at least the "white" color group

before you can use the feature.
The "White" and "Bright White" color groups
Refer to your FreeFlow customer documentation for the
procedures to assign stocks to color groups and trays.

Many customers will calibrate for two stock groups, “white” and
“bright white.” The Xerox-recommended stock for calibration
for "white" stocks is Xerox Digital Color Elite Gloss 80 lb.
(120 gsm), in 8.5 x 11 inches or any larger size available up to
the maximum stock size for the DocuColor 7000/8000 &
7000AP/8000AP Digital Press. A calibration performed on this
stock will be applied to all stocks in the white (stock) group.
The Xerox-recommended stock for calibration for "bright white"
stocks is Xerox Digital Color Xpressions+ Paper, 24 lb.
(90 gsm), 98 bright. Stocks of similar qualities may be
substituted if the recommended papers are not available.
You can select Color/Associations to ensure a stock is
associated with the "Bright White" or "White" color group
(Figure 3)

Figure 3. A stock associated with the "Bright White" color group

It is recommended that you calibrate for each stock that you

use on a regular basis.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 1-5

1. Product Overview

You may specify any size of stock that is US Letter (8.5 x 11) or
larger for the various ACQS options. If you specify a smaller
size, an error message similar to the following is displayed.

Ensure that you choose an approved stock for the calibration.

1-6 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

2. Hardware Overview

The ACQS feature uses the Internal Spectrophotometer in the

Output Transport Module. This chapter presents more
information about this device, information regarding error
messages, and hints and tips regarding problem resolution.

Internal Spectrophotometer
The Internal Spectrophotometer is mounted just above
Area 8a of the Output Transport Module (Figure 1).

2. Hardware Overview
Since the Internal Spectrophotometer is mounted near
Area 8a, use care when clearing paper jams in this area.

The Internal Spectrophotometer is sometimes referred to as the

"Inline Sensor" (ILS).

Troubleshooting
If you encounter a problem with ACQS, you should be able to
quickly resolve it by using the following information. Call Xerox
Service if these instructions do not resolve the problem.

ACQS error messages

An extensive collection of error messages is part of the ACQS
feature software. These messages are pop-up windows that
display when an error occurs while you are attempting an
ACQS operation. They are divided into the following categories:
• Sensor error messages
These are reported by the Internal Spectrophotometer.
• Input/Output error messages
These are reported by the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server
because there is a communication problem with the
Internal Spectrophotometer.
• Calibration error messages
These are reported when there are other types of problems
with an ACQS operation.
An error message that is displayed while you are attempting an
ACQS operation looks similar to the pop-up window in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Calibration error message

2-2 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

2. Hardware Overview
The ACQS feature is very reliable; there is little need for
Operator intervention. Should you encounter an error message,
such as those listed in Table 1, perform the following actions in
the order listed.
• Perform any actions suggested by the message text.
• Retry the operation by closing and reopening the window
you were using.
• Reset the Internal Spectrophotometer by opening and
closing the front door to the Output Transport Module.
• Reboot the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server.

Calibration

This chapter presents information about how to use

Automated Color Calibration option of ACQS.

Automated Color Calibration overview

The standard methodology for calibrating the Press uses an

external spectrophotometer. With the Automated Color
Calibration option of ACQS, you will save time and remove the
user variability of the calibration.

Comparison: traditional calibration and Automated Color Calibration

Figure 1 (on the next page) illustrates a flowchart comparing

the traditional external spectrophotometer workflow with the
Automated Color Calibration option workflow.
As you can see, the amount of Operator intervention is
significantly reduced with Automated Color Calibration.

For each set of calibration charts, 17 pages are printed. The
system will automatically run three sets of calibration charts
when the DocuColor 7000/8000 & 7000AP/8000AP Digital
Press is "cold" (if it has been 30 minutes or more since the
printer was last cycled up). If the system is "warmed up", it will
automatically run one set of charts.
When calibrating with 8.5 x 11 inch stock, either long edge feed
or short edge feed is acceptable. When calibration is performed
on stocks sized 11 x 17 inches and larger, calibration charts will
be printed 2-up (two charts per sheet) which reduces from 17 to
9 the number of sheets required. ACQS will automatically print
the correct number of charts base on stock size.

Configuring the Automatic Calibration option

The following information is about the "automatic" invocation

of the Automated Color Calibration option. Information about
performing a "manual" invocation (Automated Calibration) is in
the previous section.

You can choose to have the system calibrate the Press

automatically either by elapsed time or by the number of
pages printed. This is helpful when you want to ensure color
consistency either during the operating session or from day-to-
day. You specify when and what to calibrate by selecting
"Calibration/Calibration…" in the Associations window
pop-up menu (Figure 19) or the Calibration… icon menu in the
FreeFlow GUI (Figure 20 on the next page).

Figure 19. Selecting the Calibration… menu item

3. Automated Color Calibration

Figure 20. Selecting the Calibration… icon

You then select [Configure Auto Calibration] in the
Calibration window (Figure 21).

Figure 21. Calibration window

3-12 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

3. Automated Color Calibration
When the Automatic Calibration Configuration window is
displayed (Figure 22), and the Automatic Color Calibration
Mode is enabled, several parameters are available for selection
and modification.

Figure 22. Automatic Calibration Configuration window

You can select one or more of the halftones you wish to
calibrate. There is no default selection here, but a common
setting is "200 Dot". Note that selecting more than one
halftone setting will add extra time to the calibration
operation.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 3-13

3. Automated Color Calibration

Automatic Color Calibration Mode

First, you enable this option in the bottom portion of the
window (Figure 23). Once you select Enable, the other
selections become accessible.

Figure 23. Enabling the Automatic Color Calibration Mode

Control Type and Print Boundary

Select either Elapsed Time or Pages Printed to specify the
interval between Automatic Calibrations.

Elapsed Time

Using the "spinner" arrows, you can adjust the time between
calibrations to be anywhere from 2 to 24 hours (Figure 24).
This means that, once the specified time period has elapsed,
the system will calibrate the Press at the end of the active job
or before the next print cycle, if no jobs are running.

Figure 24. The "Elapsed time" parameter

A calibration will not occur, even if the specified time period has
elapsed, until a job is queued to be printed.

3-14 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

3. Automated Color Calibration

Pages Printed

Using the "spinner" arrows, you can adjust the number of pages
printed between calibrations to be anywhere from 6,000 to
75,000 (Figure 25). This means that, once the number of
specified pages has been printed, the system will calibrate the
Press at the end of the active job or before the next print cycle
if no jobs are running.

Figure 25. The "Pages printed" parameter

Stock Name
You select the particular stock with which you want the system
to calibrate the Press using the pull-down menu (Figure 26).
See the beginning of this chapter for further information about
stocks. If the specified time or number of printed pages
elapses, and the automatic calibration begins but the specified
stock is not loaded, an error will occur. See the Working with
the Automatic Calibration option section for details about
error messages and resolutions.

Figure 26. Selecting a "Stock Name" parameter

Accept resultant TRCs automatically

When selected (Figure 27), this option minimizes Operator

intervention by accepting the output of the calibration, the
Tone Reproduction Curves (TRCs), without further interaction.
This may be desirable when you specify a short elapsed period
between calibrations.

Figure 27. Enabling the "Accept resultant TRCs automatically"

parameter

4. Spot Color Calibration

This chapter presents information about how to enable and

use the Spot Color Calibration feature of ACQS.

Spot Color Calibration overview

The Spot Color Calibration (SCC) feature is an efficient

alternative to manually adjusting CMYK values using the
standard Spot Color Editor. The SCC feature:
• Improves the accuracy and control of particular PANTONE®
colors
• Improves repeatability by reducing day-to-day and
machine-to-machine color variations
• Enables faster time-to-press
• Requires no special color knowledge or skill on the part of
the Operator

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 4-1

4. Spot Color Calibration

Licensing the SCC feature

The SCC feature requires a unique license from Xerox. The

System Administrator enables and activates the license using
the License Manager window (Figure 1)

Figure 1. License Manager with SCC license enabled

It is recommended that you restart the FreeFlow Print Server
software after you license the ACQS features.

4. Spot Color Calibration

Enabling the SCC feature

To enable the SCC feature, you must access Spot Color

Calibration properties of a particular queue. To do so, select the
FreeFlow Print Server GUI Queue Manager shortcut (Figure 2)
to display the Queue Manager window. Select a queue, and
then select the Properties shortcut button (Figure 3).

4. Spot Color Calibration
In the Properties window, select the Image Quality tab, and
then select [Spot Color Calibration] to display calibration
properties (Figure 4).

Figure 4. Properties window Image Quality tab:

SCC-enabled queue
Any jobs that require critical color matching should be sent to
an SCC-enabled queue (see the SCC Workflow section).
Therefore, you must designate one or more queues to be used
for SCC processing. Then, with [Spot Color Calibration]
selected, you can:
• Select "Disabled" or "Enabled" ("Disabled" is the default)
• Choose the level of quality at which you want the SCC
feature to operate ("High" is the default)

4-4 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

4. Spot Color Calibration
If you select "Manual Selection", you can customize the way
the SCC feature operates:
• Using the Maximum Iterations1 pull-down menu, select
the maximum number of times you want the system to run
and try to correct the specified PANTONE® colors.
• Using the dE2000 Goal2 pull-down menu, select the
"dE2000" value (the level of quality you wish to obtain).
Refer to Table 2 for specific values of the predefined accuracy
settings.
Table 2. SCC established accuracy details
Setting Maximum Iterations dE2000 Goal
Medium High 4 3.0
High (default) 4 2.5
Very High 4 1.8

Note that the SCC feature will stop before it has run the
Maximum number of Iterations if it has already reached the
specified dE2000 Goal.

1
An "iteration" is one "pass" or "trial" of an SCC process. The system will generate and print a specific target
pattern, automatically check the quality of the specified PANTONE® colors, and adjust their CMYK values if
needed. However, each iteration may take several minutes. Thus, the more iterations you specify, the more time
and the greater number of sheets are required until the Maximum number of Iterations have been completed,
unless the dE2000 goal is met.
2
The "dE2000 Goal" represents an acceptable color difference as measured by delta E 2000 (dE2000), also
noted as ∆E2000 or ∆E00, derived from the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) L*a*b* color space.
dE2000 has become the standard ∆E formula for Xerox color. Although the recipients of your output will vary, the
following "rules of thumb" represent generalizations about those who will receive the documents you print:
• Color-critical recipients may expect to see a difference of less than 2.0
• Less color-critical recipients may be satisfied with a difference of 3.0 – 4.0 but may expect to see a difference
of less than 3.0 for some applications

SCC Workflow

The SCC feature requires some prerequisite actions before it is

invoked. The following workflow descriptions provide the major
steps needed to successfully invoke the SCC feature.

Submitting print jobs

Depending on your requirements and/or the types of jobs you
are printing, perform one of the following procedures to submit
a job using the SCC feature.
At this time, only PANTONE® Coated color names (listed in the
Spot Color Editor) are processed by SCC. A maximum of 32 spot
colors can be processed for a print job. If a job calls out more
than that amount, only the first 32 specified colors will be color-
corrected by SCC.
When a job with PANTONE® colors is submitted to an
SCC-enabled queue and begins processing, the job cannot be
interrupted using either "Print Now" or "Proof." However, the
operator can select "Cancel" at any point (whether color
correction has yet to begin, SCC is iterating on targets, or the
customer’s production job has started to RIP or print). If
necessary, the operator can cancel the SCC job and then select
"Print Now" or "Proof".

4-6 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

4. Spot Color Calibration

Submitting PDF jobs

PDF files that call out Pantone® Coated colors will be

automatically "pre-flighted" and will activate SCC if submitted
to an SCC-enabled queue. The PDF job can be submitted via a
FreeFlow Print Server "Hot Folder" or any other method allowed
by the FreeFlow Print Server. However, you must have a valid
"Preflight" license (Figure 5) for PDF files to work seamlessly
with the SCC feature.

Figure 5. License Manager with Preflight license enabled

The SCC feature's use of the Preflight software is independent
of, and different than, any Operator-enabled Preflight settings.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 4-7

4. Spot Color Calibration

Submitting a PostScript job from pre-press

Unlike PDF jobs, the print submitter must specifically designate

which Pantone colors should be color-corrected with a
PostScript job.
PANTONE® Coated colors can be specified in a number of ways
with SCC. Entries are not case sensitive. Thus, you can enter
either of the following:
- PANTONE 110 C
- pantone 110 c
You can also specify just by number, with or without the trailing
"c":
- 110 c
- 110
In addition, you can specify color names as long as they are
expressed exactly:
- PURE CYAN
- rubine red
You can use the following procedure to invoke SCC from pre-
press.

1. The pre-press department (or designer) identifies spot

colors during pre-flight and enters PANTONE® color names
in the appropriate Xerox PostScript print driver field.
The PostScript driver that incorporates the appropriate PPD is
available on the Xerox website at:
http://www.support.xerox.com

Here is one suggested method:

In Adobe InDesign or Illustrator: select Pre-flight, display
Colors, generate Report, and Save it to a convenient
location (for example, your desktop). Then open the report,
copy the PANTONE® color list, and paste it into the "Job
Start Message" text entry field (under the job ticket "Job
Notes" section).
Other page layout software packages and pre-flight tools offer
similar reporting capabilities.

4-8 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

4. Spot Color Calibration
2. Alternatively, the person preparing the SCC print job can
type directly into the "Job Start Message" field. When
entering PANTONE® colors from the keyboard, each entry
(including a single entry) must be followed by either a
comma or <Enter> but not both.3
3. The job is then printed via the driver, either using "print to
file" or submitting it directly to any SCC-enabled queue on
the FreeFlow Print Server.
4. The Operator ensures that the coated stock designated for
the print job is loaded in a paper tray.
The SCC feature does not provide the ability to color-correct
PANTONE® colors using uncoated stocks at the time of this
writing.

5. If necessary, the Operator releases the job per normal

procedures.

Submitting an SCC "setup job" periodically from the DFE when multiple PDF or
PostScript jobs use the same set of Spot Colors

Use the following procedure to invoke SCC from the FreeFlow

Print Server prior to printing a specific customer's or
department's job that requires one or more colors from among
a predictable set of spot colors.
1. The pre-press department or designer selects a convenient
"dummy" PostScript job and then, using the Xerox driver,
enters the set of PANTONE® colors that will be used by the
client's actual print jobs. The job should then be submitted
to a "Save" queue on the FreeFlow Print Server. The
"dummy" or "setup job" may contain any content and does
not need to call out spot colors.
Alternatively, the pre-press department or designer can
select (or create) a "dummy" PDF file that contains the
desired set of named PANTONE® colors and submit it. The
"dummy" or "setup job" PDF may contain any other (or no)
additional content.
2. The Operator runs the previously prepared "setup job"
before submitting the actual print job. If jobs are received
from several customers or departments needing different
PANTONE® colors, a "setup job" can be created for each
individual client and then run before submitting the jobs for
that client.

3
If manually inputting the PANTONE® colors on a workstation from Apple, you must use a comma as a separator.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 4-9

4. Spot Color Calibration
The spot color "setup job" can be an archived PDF file. If the
"setup job" was originally a PostScript file, it can be submitted
as a saved FRF file. If the "setup job" is run frequently, it can be
released from the FreeFlow Print Server GUI Job Manager
"Completed" list
It may be desirable to run the spot color "setup job" at the
beginning of each shift or before releasing jobs from a
customer-specific queue, where many of the jobs use some or
all of the PANTONE® colors in the "setup job".

VIPP jobs containing PANTONE® colors must use an SCC "setup

job" for Spot Color Calibration.

3. The Operator ensures that the coated stock designated for

the print job is loaded in a paper tray.
The SCC feature does not provide the ability to color-correct
PANTONE® colors using uncoated stocks at the time of this
writing.

4. The Operator then releases the actual job or jobs per

normal procedures.

SCC operation
The work of the SCC feature happens "behind the scenes". Here
is a short description of the major operations.

PostScript jobs (initial steps)

1. The SCC-enabled queue on the FreeFlow Print Server

receives the job and looks for the PANTONE® colors
specified in the Xerox job ticket.
• If a list of PANTONE® colors is found in the "Start
Message" (also known as the "Start command")
(Figure 6), the system proceeds to the next step.

Figure 6. "Start Message" displayed in the Settings tab within the Job
Properties window

• If no list of PANTONE® colors is found, the system

bypasses SCC processing then rips and prints the job like
any other job.

4-10 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

4. Spot Color Calibration
®
2. The list of PANTONE colors is then checked against the
Coated color table.
• If the list of PANTONE® color values is valid, the system
proceeds to the next step.
• If one or more of the PANTONE® colors is invalid (for
example, a color is not found in the PANTONE® Coated
table in FreeFlow Print Server), an informational
message is displayed. Clicking on the message will
display a Printer Fault Clearance window (Figure 7),
listing the job number and incorrect values. The system
then faults the job.

in job "Start" command
Information about resolving this type of problem is in the
Resolving SCC faults section.

4. Spot Color Calibration

PDF jobs (initial steps)

1. The Preflight software in the FreeFlow Print Server receives

the job and automatically detects the PANTONE® colors
that are valid for SCC processing.
2. The list of valid PANTONE® colors is passed to SCC.

SCC operation (continuing steps for PDF and PostScript jobs)

3. The system generates a customized "spot calibration" or

"target" document (Figure 8) with the specified PANTONE®
colors, up to a maximum of 32.

Figure 8. Example of an SCC "target" document

4. The system activates the Internal Spectrophotometer,
prints the customized "target" document, and measures the
quality of the specified colors. While this is happening, the
message "Spot Color Calibration in progress" is displayed on
the GUI (Figure 9).

Figure 9. "Spot Color Calibration in progress" message

• If all the PANTONE® colors are within the quality

parameter (dE2000) specified in the SCC-enabled
queue, the system proceeds to the next step.

4. Spot Color Calibration

• If one or more of the colors are not within the quality

parameter specified in the queue after the Maximum
Iterations have been reached, the job is faulted, and an
error message is displayed in the status field of the
FreeFlow Print Server (Figure 10). You can double-click
on the message and a Printer Fault Clearance window
(Figure 11), listing the failed color or colors along with a
suggested solution, will be displayed.

4. Spot Color Calibration

Resolving SCC faults

Two types of fault conditions may occur while using the SCC
feature:
• Invalid PANTONE® colors were specified by the job
submitter (PostScript jobs only)
• The Press cannot meet the desired color quality parameter
after the maximum amount of SCC iterations specified in
the queue

Resolving an invalid PANTONE® color in the PostScript Job Ticket

Perform the following procedure to resolve an invalid

PANTONE® color in the Job Ticket for a PostScript job.

1. Note the description of the problem displayed in the

Printer Fault Clearance window (Figure 12), while
particularly noting the faulted job number and the invalid
color or colors.

5. Advanced Profiling

This chapter presents information about how to enable and

use the Advanced Profiling feature of ACQS.

Advanced Profiling overview

The Advanced Profiling (AVP) feature enables you to optimize

image quality beyond what is possible with the standard
profiles provided by FreeFlow Print Server. The AVP feature:
• Provides outstanding color accuracy,
• Enables better matching to industry color standards such as
GRACoL, ISO or Japan Color, and
• Results in improved and more stable neutrals, enhanced
shadow detail, and more realistic and pleasing photos.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 5-1

5. Advanced Profiling

Enabling the AVP feature

To enable the AVP feature, your system must have:

• A valid "Advanced Profiling" license string
• Appropriate queue default settings

Licensing the AVP feature

The AVP feature requires a unique license from Xerox. The
System Administrator enables and activates the license using
the License Manager window (Figure 1)

Figure 1. License Manager with "Advanced Profiling" license enabled

It is recommended that you restart the FreeFlow Print Server
software after you license the ACQS features.

5. Advanced Profiling

Default selections in Color Management

As with the standard profile feature, you control the usage of
the AVP feature by specifying the appropriate profile in the
Color Management window from the Queue Manager
(Figure 2). You should also ensure that the recommended
settings for Rendering Intent are selected for optimum results
with Advanced Profiling.

Figure 2. The Color Management window from Queue Manager

The "PANTONE® Color Processing" option must be enabled to
complement the Advanced Profile with SCC color correction.
Also, if you select [Defaults], all the settings will revert back to
their original settings.

5. Advanced Profiling

Using the AVP feature

You can create a new Advanced Profile by selecting

Color/Associations from the FreeFlow Print Server GUI. Then,
right-click on the stock in the Associations window that you
wish to use for printing the profiling target. From the pop-up
menus, select Color Profile/New Advanced Profile Family…
(Figure 3). The New Advanced Profile Family window is
displayed (Figure 4, on the next page).
Ordinarily, the stock you choose should be the same stock you
use for Automated Color Calibration, whether it is the Xerox
recommended stock or a compatible substitute. The stock must
be at least US Letter size (8.5 x 11-inches) but can be any cut
size supported by the Press.

Creating a new Advanced Profile

Perform the following procedure to create a new Advanced

Profile.

1. Ensure the New Advanced Profile Family window is

displayed (Figure 5). Note that the "Color Group",
"Stock Name", "Type", "Color Space", and
"Variable Gloss Management" fields are already
populated.

for which you want to create the Advanced Profile
(Figure 6).

Figure 6. Selecting a halftone for the new Advanced Profile

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 5-7

5. Advanced Profiling
You need to create a new Advanced Profile for each desired
halftone in each color group. In other words, you must have
one Advanced Profile for each halftone with which you will print
on stocks. This enables you to take full advantage of the
feature.
3. In the "Profile Name" text field, input the name you want
to use for the Advanced Profile. You may also enter some
descriptive text in the "Description" text field.
"ACQ" will automatically be prepended to the name you input,
when the profile name is displayed in any menu or list (after it
is saved).

In the "Profile Name" and/or "Description" text fields, you

might wish to include the date you are creating this profile as a
quick reference.

4. From the "Variable Gloss Management" pull-down menu,

select the type of image gloss handling for the Advanced
Profile (Figure 7). Note that your selection will become the
default in other New Advanced Profile Family windows
until you change it. You may wish to experiment with each
setting prior to running your final print jobs.

Figure 7. Selecting a gloss handling option for the new Advanced Profile
If selected, "Low gloss", "Lower gloss", or "Lowest gloss" will
automatically be appended to the name you input, when the
profile name is displayed in any menu or list (after it is saved).

5. Select when you want the "profile target" to print by

selecting one of the radio buttons.
6. When you are ready, select [Create Profile] to begin the
process. A series of status messages are displayed in the
message area.
If it has been longer than eight hours since the last calibration
for the selected halftone and Color Group, the system performs
an Automatic Color Calibration before beginning the Advanced
Profile creation process.

5-8 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

5. Advanced Profiling
In the unlikely event the system does not detect a valid
Automated Color Maintenance license, the following message
will display.

If you select [Yes], the New Advanced Profile Family window

will close since you have indicated that you intend to calibrate
with the External Spectrophotometer (DTP41), using the
standard manual procedure. After completing calibration, you
can again open the New Advanced Profile Family window. If
you select [No], the New Advanced Profile Family window
stays open so that you can select [Create Profile].
7. The print target, consisting of 64 8.5 x 11-inch sheets, or 32
sheets for stocks 11 x 17-inch or larger, is printed and
routed to the Top Tray of the Stacker(s) in the system.
Before the target prints, the system may print 48 pages of color
content to ensure that the Press is warmed up. This helps
ensure the most accurate possible profile. These "warm-up
sheets" are also routed to the Top Tray(s).
8. Once the target has been printed, it will take about 10
minutes for the system to create the Advanced Profile. You
may process other print jobs during this time.
If you select [Close], there may be a delay of several minutes
before the Advance Profile window actually closes and the
profiling operation stops. During this time, the [Close] button is
grayed out.
9. When the system finishes creating the Advanced Profile, a
dialog box is displayed prompting, “Save Profile?” If you
select [Yes], the profile is saved. If you select [No], the
system discards the profile and closes the New Advanced
Profile Family window.

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 5-9

5. Advanced Profiling
10. When the profile is saved, you will be able to see your new
Advanced Profile assigned to the entire stock group in the
Associations window. (Figure 8).

Figure 8. The Advanced Profile listed with the stock

If an error occurs either during the Automatic Color Calibration
or during the creation of the Advanced Profile, see the "Problem
solving" section in Chapter 2, Hardware Overview. If the
problem persists, contact Xerox Service, specifically mentioning
that you are using the Advanced Profiling feature.

Replacing an Advanced Profile

Just as with standard profiles, you can replace an Advanced

Profile with a new one. This enables you to preserve the name
of the existing profile so you do not have to re-enter it. This
also eliminates the need to delete the old one before creating
the new one. However, unlike the standard feature, you can
replace an Advanced Profile for the same halftone only.
Individual halftone profiles deliver the best image quality. You
can also replace a standard profile in a Profile Family, with an
Advanced Profile for that same halftone.
Perform the following procedure to replace an Advanced
Profile.

1. Select Color/Associations from the FreeFlow Print Server

GUI.

5-10 XSIS ACQS Operator Guide

5. Advanced Profiling
2. Right-click on a stock and halftone in the Associations
window with the Advanced Profile you want to replace.
From the pop-up menus, select Color Profile/Replace
Advanced Halftone Profile… (Figure 9).

3. The Replace Advanced Halftone Profile window is
displayed (Figure 10). Note that the "Profile Name" field is
locked.

Figure 10. The Replace Advanced Profile Family window

XSIS ACQS Operator Guide 5-11

5. Advanced Profiling
4. Input a new description if you wish and select
[Replace Profile]. The system will start the process to
create a profile to replace the one you have selected.
If you use the Replace Advanced Halftone Profile window to
substitute an Advanced Profile for a standard profile in a Profile
Family, the Replace Advanced Halftone Profile window will
show the name of the original (standard) profile for the
selected halftone. You may wish to input a word or phrase in
the "Description" field as a reminder that the halftone is
actually an Advanced Profile; for example, "ACQ now".
In the unlikely event the system does not detect a valid
Automated Color Maintenance license, the following message
will display.

If you select [Yes], the Replace Advanced Halftone Profile

window will close since you have indicated that you intend to
calibrate with the External Spectrophotometer (DTP41), using
the standard manual procedure. After completing calibration,
you can again open the Replace Advanced Halftone Profile
window. If you select [No], the Replace Advanced Profile
Family window stays open so that you can select [Replace
Profile].
5. When the system finishes creating the Advanced Profile,
confirm that you want to replace the old Advanced Profile.

B. Manual color calibration

This section provides the procedure to use when the ACQS

feature is not functioning or to isolate whether the ACQS
feature is causing the Press not to calibrate properly.

Procedure

This procedure is derived from the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server,

Version 6, Online Help. Use the information from the FreeFlow
Online Help for the most updated procedure.

Perform the following steps to calibrate the Press.

1. Select Color/Associations from the menu bar.

2. Select a Color Group that currently has associated stocks
loaded in the machine.
3. Select the [Calibrate...] button at the bottom of the screen.
4. Within the text fields, ensure the Color Group and Stock
Name are correct.
5. Select the halftone for which you are calibrating.

If you intend to use several halftone profiles, you will need to

complete this process for each of the desired halftones.

6. Select [1. Print Target...].

7. Select a quantity to print using the spin box.

The default quantity is 5 copies.

8. Select [OK].
9. When the Information screen appears, select [OK]. The
target will print.
10. Select [2. Properties...].
11. Type a new profile name in the text field.
12. If desired, type a description.

B. Manual Color Calibration
13. Under "Options," select whether the profile will:
• Apply To All Halftones
• Apply Only To Selected Halftone
14. Select [OK].
15. Select [3. Measure...].
16. Select [Begin] and follow the on-screen prompts as the
X-Rite Spectrophotometer scans a series of strips on the
test target. A set of Tone Reproduction Curves (TRCs) is
generated.
17. When all strips have been scanned, select [OK] when the
"Calibration Complete" message pops up.
18. The results of the scan will be displayed on the System
Calibration window for each color channel TRC for the
current state of the system. Each color channel can be
viewed alone by selecting the associated check box. Each
TRC is associated with the stock and up to five different
TRCs can be stored for calibration.

Selecting [Close] will terminate the calibration process.

Selecting [Revert] will allow you to select a previously created
calibration TRC. Selecting [Accept...] will change the system
operation to the newly created TRC. Selecting [Start Over] will
start the calibration process from the beginning.

19. After accepting the calibration data, select [OK] in the

Accept Calibration Data screen to close the dialog.
20. Select [OK] to close the information dialog.
21. Select [Close] to exit the calibration dialog.
22. Select [Yes] to answer the question dialog. Within the Color
Profiles tab, your calibration date and time will appear for
all stocks associated with the profile. The stock actually
calibrated will be in bold type.
