Background Information for Learners

Computer Systems Servicing will teach you how to install and configure computer systems, its
set-up, networks and servers and also its maintenance. To start our lesson, we will learn how to use the
tools in a right way to prevent us from accidents and or to avoid from damage to the equipment as we
configure computer system. These tools to be used will help in the completion of the different job
requirements, keeping them well preserved that will make work easier and more efficient. And as initial
step, proper tool selection shall be undertaken first.
To use the tools properly, the first thing to do is to know and understand the scope of work to be
done. Second, make plans for the scope and sequence of task. Third, select the best tool and the last,
use the right tool for the task.
For the safety use of hardware tools, consider the following tips
1. Read manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Examine each tool if there is damage before use and never use the damaged tool.
3. Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.
4. Use the correct tool for the job requirement.

The Hardware Tools

For every job there is a proper tool. Be familiar with the correct uses of each tools intended for
the current task. A toolkit may contain all the tools for computer equipment repairs.
Electro Static Discharge (ESD) Tool. These tools are used to block the sudden flow of
electricity between two electrically charge objects. Examples are the following:
Antistatic Wrist Strap –It serves as a ground bracelet used to prevent the build-up of
static electricity between the person and equipment.
Antistatic Mat – A flat surface device that discharge the build-up of static electricity
from the equipment.
Hand Tools – These tools are held only in hands used in accomplishing specific task.
Flat screw driver – A tool used to tighten or loosen screws that have a straight, linear
notch in their heads with a wedge-shaped flat tip.
Phillips Screwdriver – A tool used with a type of screw that has a slot in its top that
looks like a cross.
Long Nose Pliers – These are useful for reaching into small areas where cables or other
materials have become stuck or unreachable with fingers or other means.
Side cutter pliers – Tools are used for cutting wires, screws and nails.
Soldering iron – It is a tool used in soldering.
Soldering lead - A fusible metal alloy used to join metal work pieces.
Crimping Tool – Used to crimp RJ45.
Wire stripper – It is a tool used to strip the electrical insulation from electric wires.
Tweezers – These are used for picking up small object inside your computer.
Soldering stand – It is composed of heavy-duty metal base and a reinforced spring
holder
Cleaning Tools – Used to clean computer equipment without broking or damaging it.
Cable Ties – A tool used to bundle cables.
Lint Free Cloth - A special type of cleaning cloth that is used to clean different parts of
computer without leaving dust on it.
Compressed Air – Used to blow away dust and debris inside your computer.
Diagnostic Tools – It checks the electric circuit of the computer.
Multi tester - A tool used to measure voltage, current and resistance; it uses a micro
ammeter with a moving pointer to display readings.
LAN tester – A tool is used for testing Ethernet cables for faults or missing pair
connections.
Proper Use of Tools

ESD tools
Antistatic devices designed to help eliminate static electricity. It does this by having a
controlled low resistance: a metal mat would keep parts grounded but would short out exposed parts;
an insulating mat would provide no ground reference and so would not provide grounding.
Anti – static wrist strap is easy to wear.Wear the strap with the metal part touching your skin.
Clip the alligator clip on a power supply screw or you could have it clipped on the grills of the PSU
fans.
For the anti – static mat, place an anti-static mat on the desktop surface of a workbench. Plug
the grounding connector attached to the mat into the wall socket. Place the computer to be repaired on
the anti-static mat. Unplug the power cord from the computer

Hand Tools

For flat screwdriver and phillips screwdriver, hold the tip of the screwdriver with one hand as
you turn its handle with the other. Grasp the handle with your dominant hand and the tip with your
other as close to the head of the screw as you can.

Using the long nose pliers, use to grip small objects, reach awkward places, holding wires, bend
loops, and attach wire. Work involving smaller gauge wire.

For soldering iron, plug the soldering iron, wait for it to heat up, moisten the sponge, wipe the
tip of the iron on the damp sponge, melt a little solder on the tip of the iron and the tip of the soldering
iron should be a shiny silver color.

For crimping tool, place the connector into the crimper and press the handles tightly.

For tweezers, place them where the small object when you can’t reach the small object inside
your computer.

To use the wire stripper, strip the insulation. Pull the wire stripper towards the cut end of the
wire to remove the insulation. The action is like pulling a sock off a foot. Some users find it easiest to
push against the tool using the thumb on the hand that is gripping the wire, while the other hand holds
the handles of the tool firmly shut.
Proper use of Cleaning Tools
Cable Ties
Simply insert the pointed end of the cable into the locking piece; usually the square head
of the tie and there is a hole which the pointed end of the tie is designed to run through on
the clasp, it will only work one way.
Lint Free Cloth
Simply wipe the lint free cloth to the computer parts.
Compressed Air
Blow the compressed air around the computer component to take away dust and debris.
Diagnostic Tools
Computer diagnostic tools can be used scan your computers hard drive, check your ram
for errors, check CPU temp and give you information about any other devices connected
to your computer. These tools are made to find problems that may be disrupting your
computer's normal performance.

Maintain Hand Tools

Great set of tools will always be useful to you, provided you take good care of them like
protecting against damage and rust and storing them neatly. You may find it expensive to buy top
quality hand tools.
Best Practices for the proper storage of tools
1. Set a place for the storage of tools and equipment.
2. Organize the tools as to each categories (e.g. cords, screws)
3. Put out to lubricate moving tools, loose handle before storing it.
4. Prepare shelves for access and labelling.
5. Keep safety manual for the tools.
Proper storage of tools would really be beneficial in these terms:
• It would be easier to find - Being organized and storing tools properly would make it easier to
find whenever you need them.
• It may refrain them from getting lost - It could also help in refraining them from getting lost
since they will be find in a specific place where it was stored.
• It prevents injuries - if proper stored, other people in the house will be safe most especially from
tools with sharp objects.
• It reduces tool maintenance - prevents tool from being destroyed, getting dusts and rusts.
• For better appearance (since it is well organized)

REFLECTION
For the basic tools that everyone has in their toolbox, you don’t necessarily need training.
However, if you are going into computer repair, that training becomes absolutely crucial.
The learner already have a core understanding of how to use basic tools, which allows the more advanced
training on the use and application of more advanced tools to become more effective.
