Types of Cad files

Booleaned and non-boolean .3dm

- .3dm is the native file extension for

all Rhino based software and plugin

- A booleaned and non-booleaned

.3dm will look pretty much the
same, however a non booleaned file
will allow for a much easier
modification if needed.
Types of Cad files

.stl file

- .stl files are the ones to be sent to

3d printing or as a result of a 3d
scanned mesh. They can be
opened in Rhinoceros and in many
other software, in this case
Meshmixer.

- An .stl is made of a mesh so it does

not allow for complex modifications
Types of Cad files

Meshed geometry inside a .3dm file

- It is possible to import meshed

geometry into a .3dm, for example,
we can import a 3d scanned
gemstone ( mesh) and create the
mount in Rhinoceros.
Types of Cad files

obj

- .obj files can be used to bring

geometry from a Rhino into zbrush
for example.
Ring thicknesses
1.80mm should be considered the
standard, however we could consider
acceptable from 1.40mm to 2mm
Ring width

2mm should be considered the standard

for a medium weight ring, however some
designs could be considered acceptable
at 1.50mm.

The maximum width would be determined

by the design, personally I would not
make a ring wider than 10mm
Collets
It could also be accepted to make the
bottom cullet thicker than the top one
