COMPUTER SERVERS AND FUNCTIONS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

A computer server is a system that gives information and access to the resources, data, services and
programs to other computers (client) over a network. Whenever a computer shares its resources with other
computers, it is considered as servers. There are different types of servers which includes web servers, mail
servers and virtual servers.

Servers can be considered as a dedicated to its function. They only perform their server task. A
single multiprocessing operating unit enable a single computer to execute several programs at the same
time. In this regard, server can also be referred to as the program that is managing the resources than the
entire computer.

There is a system that can provide resources and use them from another system at the same time.
This is called an individual system. In this regard it can be concluded that device could be both a server and
a client at the same time.

One of the example of the first server is

the mainframe computer or the minicomputer.
Minicomputers were much smaller than in size
than of the mainframe computers. But still, they
ended up becoming much larger than desktop
computers.
 TYPES OF COMPUTER SERVER AND ITS FUNCTIONS

TYPES OF COMPUTER FUNCTIONS

SERVER
Application Servers • A type of middleware, a software that connects two other
separate applications.
• It occupies a large space of computer territory
• Often connect the database server and the end user server
Audio/Video Servers • Provides multimedia capabilities by enabling the websites to
broadcast streaming its multimedia contents.
• Streaming technologies are used for transferring data so that
it can be easily processed as steady and continuous stream.
Chat Servers • Authorize a large number of users to interchange information
in an domain that offer real-time discussion capabilities.
• Real time means synchronous or happening at the same time.
Fax Servers • Used to receive and send fax messages that can be stored as
printable word documents.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) • Considered as one of the oldest internet service
Servers • It enables the safe moving of files between computers
possible.
Groupware Servers • It is designed to enable users regardless of location
collaborate with each other via the internet and work together
in a virtual environment.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) • Provide an option for those seeking real-time capabilities
Servers • Includes various networks (net) that permits the users to
connect with each other via an IRC network.
List Servers • Provide a better way of managing mailing lists that deliver
announcements, newsletters, or advertisements.
Mail Servers • It moves and store mail over a corporate network and across
the internet
News Servers • Act as a distribution and source of delivery for the different
public news group that are currently available over the
internet.
Proxy Servers • A web browser that filter request, share connections and
improve the performance of another server on the web.
