Module 11

Nano Technology

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Define nanotechnology;
2. Discuss major impacts of nanotechnology on society; and
3. Cite some examples of nanotechnology applications and products.

Introduction
The fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology are known for their
contributions to the economy of all countries and almost every human
life. Nanotechnology is a fast growing area of science and research.

Lesson 1 : Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology refers to the constructing and engineering of the

functional system at very micro level or atomic level. The word nanotechnology is
derived from the words nano and technology; nano is one billionth of quantity and
is represented mathematically as 1 x 10 -9 and technology generally refers to the
application of scientific knowledge.

History of Nanotechnology

 The 1st concept was presented in 1959 by the famous professor of

physics Dr. Richard P. Feynman

 Invention of scanning tunneling microscope in 1981 and the

discovery of fullerene in 1985 lead to the emergence of
nanotechnology.

 The term nanotechnology has been coined by Norio Taniguchi

in1974.

 In 2000 ,the application of nanotechnology started although there

were limited application of nanomaterial such as silver nano
particles as an antibacterial agent and nanoparticle-based
transparent sunscreen

Approaches of Nanotechnology
1.Top -down approaches
2. Bottom- up approaches

 uses principles of molecular  layer-by-layer self assembly
 create smaller object using  arrange smaller combination into
larger application more complex

Potential Application of Nanotechnology

The top nanotechnology application and the UN Millennium Development
Goals include:

1.Energystorage,production and conversion

2. Productivity and enhancement in Agriculture
3. Water treatment and remediation
4. Disease diagnosis and screening
5. Food processing and storage
6. Air pollution and remediation
7. Construction

Nanotechnology-based Consumer Products

1.Skin care products

2. Lithium ion batteries
3. Fabric containing silver nanoparticles
4. In sports like tennis racquets were improved by adding nanotubes to the
frames
5.Paints based on nanomaterial
6. Filtration set-up

Advantages and Disadvantages of Nanotechnology

Advantages Disadvantages
 material  Health and safety issues
-can make unique materials and  Can be use in war
product which are  Environmental issues
stronger,lighter,cheaper,durable
and precise
 Industrial
-computer and other gadget can
become smaller and faster
-cheaper
 Medicine
- Treatment(cancer)
- Body appearance
- Immunity

Risk Assessment
National Science Foundation and the US Environmental Protection
Agency has identified a number of critical risk assessment issues regarding
manufactured nanoparticles.These are:

1.Exposure assessment
2. toxicology of manufactured nano particles
3. ability to extrapolate manufactured
4. environmental and biological issues
5.transformation of manufactured nano particles
6. recyclability and overall sustainability of manufactured nano materials

Nanotechnology in the Philippines

The Department of Science and Technology formulated a roadmap for the
development of nanotechnology. The major programs of this roadmap include:
1.nano-based technologies and materials
2. nanosensors and nanodiagnosyics
3. nanometrology for ICT
80

4.nanostructured solar energy devices

Summing Up

Nanotechnology have the capability to foster new developments in

science, technology and innovation through the dissemination of new knowledge
and applications.
Human health, safety and environmental impact should be given top
priority concerning nanotechnology.
