EXAM NUMBER 1

Name:______________________________________ Score:___________________________
Section:_____________________________________ Date:____________________________

Answer the following questions. Write your solution and box your final answer. All answers must have the appropriate unit. For answers
containing decimals, round off your final answer to 3 decimal units unless otherwise stated. Not following instructions will result in an incorrect
answer.

1. Round off 4436249727 to scientific notation with the coefficient containing 7 significant figures.

2. Add 7.61 x 107 to 183500 x 103. Answer must be in scientific notation containing 3 significant figures.

3. Divide 15.5111863 x 108 by 5.23 x 104 and convert your answer to scientific notation with the coefficient rounded off to 5 significant figures.

4. Convert 1539 yoctoliter to teraliter. Answer must be in scientific notation containing 4 significant figures.

5. How many liters are there in 38 gallons? Round off your answer to standard notation containing 4 significant figures. (Use 1 gallon=3.79
liters)

6. James, Robert, John, and Michael performed an experiment to measure the density of Germanium (5.4 g/mL). These are their
measurements.
James: 5.016, 5.227, 5.641, 4.836
Robert: 5.349, 5.431, 5.395, 5.442
John: 5.624, 5.625, 5.623, 5.626
Michael: 5.401, 5.399, 5.402, 5.398
a. Which of the following data is precise but not accurate?
b. What is the relative error of James’ measurements?
c. What is the relative error of Robert’s measurements?
d. What is the relative error of John’s measurements?
e. What is the relative error of Michael’s measurements?
f. If James’ measurements are determined to have an uncertainty of 4.372, what is the relative uncertainty of the measurements?
g. If Robert’s measurements are determined to have an uncertainty of 0.891, what is the percent uncertainty of the measurements?
h. If John’s measurements are determined to have an uncertainty of 6.087, what is the fractional uncertainty of the measurements?
i. If Michael’s measurements are determined to have an uncertainty of 2.531, what is the relative uncertainty of the measurements?

7. Vector B has a magnitude of 15m and is located 45 degrees east of north.

a. Find the x and y-component of vector B.
b. Write your answer in vector form.

8. Two motorcycles are left in the motorcycle grand prix competition. The leading competitor travels a distance of 25m at 20 degrees west of
south, then turns left travelling a distance of 20m at 35 degrees north of west. When his opponent is catching up, he speeds up turning right
at a distance of 35m at 10 degrees east of north, and to finish the race, he travels 5m at 25 degrees east of south.
a. Find the resultant x and y-component and
b. the magnitude and angle of the resultant vector of the winner’s travel.

9. A woman is looking at the man who can’t be moved of distance 4m to her east. After 5 seconds, the man started running farther to the east
of the woman. At 3 seconds after the man started walking, his coordinate x varies with time according to the equation below:
2 + 𝑡5
𝑥 =4+ [ 2 ]
𝑡
a. What is the distance of the man after 6 and 8 seconds when the woman started looking at him?
b. What is the average velocity during the interval?
c. What is the expression for the man’s instantaneous velocity as a function of time?
d. What is the instantaneous velocity at 6 and 8 seconds after the woman started looking at him?
