INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Waste contamination has been an issue in the management of sustainable

water resources. Debris causes pollution in irrigation canals and rice fields,
rivers, lakes, and seas. Waste exists throughout irrigation canals and rice
fields, and the occurrence it does influence by water flow, time, and farmer
activities. This waste causes a high risk of disturbing the operation,
maintenance of the irrigation canals, environmental quality, social life, and
farmers' health.

Irrigation is the process of watering crops by bringing in water through

pipelines, canals, sprinklers, or other manufactured ways rather than relying
solely on rainfall. Without irrigation, it could not sustain agriculture in scant or
seasonal rainfall areas. Irrigation promotes agricultural growth and quality in
places with erratic precipitation. Irrigation increases food supply reliability by
allowing farmers to cultivate crops constantly. Nevertheless, irrigation has
been a significant part of agriculture for nearly 5,000 years, and various
cultures worldwide have developed it separately. Irrigation systems have been
under pressure to produce more with dwindling water supply. Different
creative approaches can obtain a competitive edge while also decreasing
environmental costs such as water abstraction, energy consumption,
pollutants, and so on (Faurès and Svendsen, 2007). For example, farmers
can make greater use of existing technological systems, adopt new
technologies, improve their soil and water management abilities, modify
planting patterns to reduce water demand and usage, reduce pesticide inputs,
and so on. One of the technological systems currently being used is the
Automatic Backwash Filter which uses electric power to operate and
consumes a large amount of electricity which is costly and highly contributes
to environmental problems.
Hydropower is one of the oldest and most significant renewable energy
sources, generating electricity from the natural flow of moving water.
Therefore, in terms of maintenance, operations, and fuel, hydropower offers
relatively cheap costs compared to other electricity sources throughout a
project's lifetime. Of course, significant upfront expenses are inherent with any
large energy source, but the longer lifespan of hydropower spreads these
costs out over time. Furthermore, the equipment utilized at hydropower plants
frequently functions for extended periods without needing replacements or
repairs, saving money in the long run.

There is a need to study self-cleaning hydropower so that we may utilize an

alternative way of filtering waste for irrigation water that can help maintain and
enrich our soil and does not destroy our nature. Furthermore, it can be a cost-
efficient way by taking advantage of using hydropower as the source. The
development of such a system will reduce the time, labor, and money
invested in irrigation canal maintenance.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to lessen wastes existing in irrigation/ river areas as much as
possible to attain waste reduction. This helps the people living nearby water
areas to have a clean water environment and for having good health. It also
helps the species living under water to clean their habitat and for them to
prevent eating harmful substances. The proponents provide questions for this
study:

1. Can the machine do more work than man power?

2. What is the design of the irrigation waste collector so as not to cause
flooding?
Significance of the Study

The findings of this study were useful to the following entities:

Environment

Preserving environment is one of the most important things to do.

Getting rid of all water wastes can help the people secure the sources of
water.

Agriculture industry

The agriculture industry can use this machine to have a technological

advancement in collecting waste in different water areas. They can distribute
the machine to every place that requires the needs of waste reduction.
Companies can benefit from this study because they can use this to make
renewable source energy without using a lot of money since Hydropower is a
renewable energy

The Researchers
For aspiring Mechanical Engineers researchers, this study presents a
learning curve. In order to help them further their understanding of the subject,
this tool will direct and navigate them towards locating reliable, credible, and
essential elements for the betterment and improvement of their proposed
instrument. Other researchers will benefit from this study because this can be
used as a reference for future studies.

The Community

The community can benefit from this research for the fact that this
helps them take away the solid waste materials from the irrigations and
canals. Community near in water areas can be affected during bad weather
because of the canals blocked with wastes that causes flood.
