IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous ENGAGEMENT:

lesson or
presenting the new Have you observed how houses are built?
lesson What will the construction worker do first?

(Icon Experience 2022)

What is a Nippa hut? Observe the framework of the Nippa

hut, how will you compare these to the framework of the
human body?

Is there a framework that provides structure/support to

the human body?

B. Establishing a Activity:
purpose for the
lesson Ask volunteer learners to arrange this picture on the
board.

(Visible Body 2022)

What is the importance of having a framework in our

body?
What do you call to this framework of the body?
What do you think is our lesson for today?

C. Presenting EXPLORATION:
examples/instance
s of the new lesson Ask to the students:
1.What is the purpose of the human skeleton?
2. Do you know that the skeletal system has different
parts?

Discussion of the lesson utilizing PowerPoint

presentation:

The skeletal system is mainly composed of bones which

are classified into two divisions, the axial and the
appendicular skeleton.

The axial skeleton includes the skull, vertebral column,

ribs, and sternum. These bones form the axes or
framework of the trunk and head. The appendicular
skeleton includes the bones of the shoulder, arms,
hands, hips, legs, and feet.

Below is an illustration showing the axial and

appendicular skeleton:

(Visible Body 2022)

All other bones of skeletal system are classified into 4 as

shown in the table below:

Classification Bones Location

Long Bones limbs like arms and legs
Short Bones wrist and ankles
Flat Bones shoulder blades and skull
Irregular Bones face and vertebrae

One of the axial skeletons is the skull which consists of

cranium and facial bones. The cranium is made up of
eight bones joined together to form a rigid case that
protects the brain. The face is made up of 14 facial
bones. The eye socket protects the eyeball while mandible
or jawbone is movable bone that holds the teeth.

The spinal column or vertebrae (neck and backbone) are

irregular bones that protect the spinal cord while the
ribcage protects the lungs and the heart. Vertebrae are
arranged on top of the other and move over each other
slightly. There are 33 vertebrae in the spinal column of a
child and 26 in an adult. This is so because as the
child grows, the last seven bones join together to form
just two bones. Ribs are the bones at the side of the
chest. There are 12 pairs of ribs. The upper 7 pairs are
the true ribs because they are connected to the
breastbone and the last two pairs are not connected.
These ribs are called floating ribs. The shoulder has the
collarbone found in front of it. Scapula is the shoulder
bone found at the back of your shoulder.

The appendages found in the lower extremities are

composed of pelvic bones. Pelvic bones support the lower
parts of the body and aid the movement of the legs. The
upper arms have one long bone called the humerus and
two bones in the lower arm are known as the radius and
ulna. Radius or radial bone is one of the two large bones
of the forearm. The other bone is the ulna. The ulna is
usually slightly longer than the radius while the latter is
usually thicker.

The wrist connects the hand to the forearm. Each wrist

or carpal consists of 8 bones. The palm or metacarpal
has 5 bones.
Inside the bones are bone marrows that are very
important for the body to manufacture blood cells. Bone
marrows are of two types, the red bone marrow and the
yellow bone marrow. The red bone marrow is found in the
humerus, femur, pelvis and vertebrae while the yellow
bone marrow is found in many other bones.

Directions: A piece of paper, label the parts of the skeletal

system.

D. Discussing new EXPLANATION:

concepts
The human skeletal system has several important
functions.

1. Support -The skeletal system provides the framework

which supports and maintains shape of the body. It gives
the body much needed support.

2. Protection -The skeletal system protects the internal

organ of the body.

3. Movement- The skeletal system provides an

attachment for the muscle which makes body movements
possible.

4. Storage and Supply- The skeletal system stores

important minerals like calcium and phosphorus and
produces both red and white blood cells.

1. What are the functions of a skeletal system?

2. What are some of the activities that can promote
healthy skeletal system?

(Nancy N. Torres 2019)

(CSE Integration)

Today, at a very young age - some of the children are

already engaging to some activities that are unhealthy to
the body. Some of these activities include risky sexual
activities.

Risky sexual activity is doing sexual activities that could

spread diseases or causes physical or emotional harm.

3. What are the possible impacts to the skeletal system of

child or a person if he or she engages to risky sexual and
non-sexual activities at a very young age?
(Possible answers:
1. Physical violence that can lead bone injuries, and
2. Transmission of diseases/infections that can affect
bone density.
Note: include answers that are not mentioned here but are
relevant to the topic.)

Explain the possible answer in number 2.

(Testosterone is a hormone that helps in bone density

(bone strength and thickness) and determines whether a
person is likely to have osteoporosis (a health condition
that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely
to break). However, one reason why testosterone becomes
low and affects bone density is when a person’s testicle is
infected due to sexually transmitted diseases or infections
acquired through risky sexual activities.)
E. Continuation of the Directions: Study the name of the bones inside the box.
discussion of new Classify them into Axial or Appendicular. Write your
concepts (leads to answer in your Science Journal.

Mastery Questions:
1. What are the two major divisions of the skeletal
system?
2. How can you differentiate the bones in the axial from
the bones in the appendicular?
3. What are the four classification of bones?
4. What are the functions of the skeletal system.
F. Developing mastery Differentiated Activity:
(leads to Formative
Assessment 3) Directions: Choose from the following activities below and
accomplish the designated task. Do the activity in 20
minutes.

1. Draw a skeletal system with the major parts.

2. Create a model of skeletal system using recyclable
materials.
3. Write a poem about what you learned in the lesson.
4. compose a rap about skeletal system.

Mastery questions:
Why should bones be strong?
Why is it important to prevent falls and other accidents
that could injure the bones?
Why is it dangerous to move a person with spinal
fracture?
How will you take care of your bones?

G. Finding practical ELABORATION:

applications of
concepts and skills Mix and match activity:
in daily living
(reflective Group Work
approach)
Mechanics:

1. The class will be divided into 5 groups.

2. Each group will be provided with parts (green) and
functions (yellow) written in meta-cards.
Example:
Parts (green color meta-card): Eye Socket
Functions (yellow color meta-card): Protects the eyes
3. Every group will match the parts with their
corresponding functions.
4. Meta-cards will be pasted in a manila paper.
5. Every group will choose a representative to present
their answers.
6. The group that earns the most number of correct
answer wins.

KBI: Alertness and cooperation

How did each member of the group show their
cooperation during the activity?

TRIVIA: Bones are alive. They are made of living cells

capable of growing and repairing themselves.
H. Making Directions: Complete the paragraph below by supplying
generalizations and the missing words. Write your answer in your Science
abstractions about journal.
