Proposal Activity
Department of Education
Region X-Northern Mindanao
Division of Iligan City
ILIGAN CITY EAST HIGH SCHOOL-SANTIAGO ANNEX
Santiago, Iligan City
T- SHAPE PROGRAM
Teacher-Students Health Advocates and Peer Education
Rationale:
Republic Act No. 10533, otherwise known as Enhanced Basic Education Act of
2013 (K to 12 Law). It stipulated that being the 21th century the importance of learning
of students is not only in the classroom with the 8 learning areas but also through
experience and exposure outside with physical interaction.
By that, Iligan City East High School- Santiago Annex, under the supervision of
Iligan City Division Department of Education implement an Activity that promotes
Camaraderie, enhance physical ability and promotes good healthy lifestyle between and
among the learners and teachers. In fact, it is strongly stipulated on the recently
released DepEd Order No. 36 series 2016 also known as Policy Guidelines on Awards
and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program
Iligan City East High School- Santiago Annex is an institution that promotes quality
education and instills moral values at the same time attaining healthy lifestyle to its
students and one of these is Extra Curricular Activities (ECA). ECA take care of the
students’ different developmental needs such as their sense of moral values and
attitudes, skills and creativity. Through their participation in ECA, students can learn to
communicate, to cooperate with other people and in addition to enrich their life
experience. If students are given the opportunities to organize ECA, they will gain first-
hand experience of program planning and leadership, thus enabling them to discover
and develop their potential. Research also indicated that both the type of extracurricular
programs and level of participation may impact the individuals' development (Eccles,
2003).
Fujita cited in his study that many extracurricular activities have proven to be
beneficial in building and strengthening academic achievement, even if the activities are
not obviously related to academic subjects (Marsh &Kleitman, 2002, para. 9). “A
number of studies revealed that students participating in extracurricular activities did
better academically than students who did not participate” (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002.). A
lot of studies have been conducted concerning the relationship between extracurricular
activities and academic performance. Total extracurricular activity participation (TEAP),
or participation in extracurricular activities in general, is associated with an improved
grade point average, higher educational aspirations, increased college attendance, and
reduced absenteeism” (Broh, 2002).
