Difference between Super Yachts and Cruise

Ships
When you're looking for employment onboard a ship, there are a number of differ-
ences between working on a super yacht or on a cruise ship.

Super Yachts

A super yacht or mega yacht is a luxury privately owned sailing or motor powered
vessel that is operated by professional crewman. Depending on the wealth of the
owner, a super yacht may travel the world, winter in the South Pacific, or spend the
summer in the Mediterranean.

The work load on a super yacht may vary as the ship may not be in use year round;
depending on the crew position held onboard the ship, a crew member may only get
paid for the time when the ship is in use and not during the off season. Generally,
crew member wages onboard luxury yachts are much better than that on a cruise
ship. Crew members work in a more intimate setting while tending to the yacht own-
ers and a small number of guests.

Even though a super yacht is typically over 78' (24 meters), most crew members will
work in close proximity with others and may be responsible for several specific jobs
while onboard. No matter what your position, your work will be respected by all oth-
er crew members onboard a super yacht and socialization between all members is the
norm. Most crew members will have their own private cabin onboard.

Cruise Ships
A cruise ship is only one of several ships within a fleet owned by a major corporation
such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines or Royal Caribbean Internation-
al. A cruise ship will be in use all year around and may only be out of service for a few
weeks when it goes into dry dock for regularly schedule maintenance. Typically a cruise
ship will sail in Alaska or Europe during the summer months and the Caribbean during
the winter.

The work load onboard a cruise ship can be strenuous as many crew work 10 hours per
day, 7 days per week, during the entirety of their contract which can vary from six
months to one year in duration. If a crew member works in a service position, such as a
cabin steward or waiter, they will receive tips from the passengers in addition to their
wages; but this also means that crew members may have to deal with possibly hundreds,
if not thousands, of different passengers each day.

Unfortunately, there is a pronounced job hierarchy onboard all cruise ships and sociali-
zation can be restricted to certain areas of the ship and within that job class. All crew
members onboard a cruise ship will share somewhat crowded accommodations and will
generally will be responsible only for one job.

Job Hierarchy Onboard of a Luxury Cruise

Ship
Once you’re ready to delve into the world of cruising as a career choice, you must also
be prepared to accept a working society made up distinctive classes. Surprisingly so in
this day and age, but there is a distinguished difference between crew, staff, and officers
onboard any cruise ship.
Let’s take a closer look at the hierarchy of employees onboard a cruise ship:

Crew
Crew members on a cruise ship are service employees who work under the direction of
a Manager or other supervising staff. Crew members may or may not have direct con-
tact with passengers. These positions include:

 Waiters
 Assistant waiters
 Chefs
 Cabin stewards
 Bar staff

And those involve in trades such as:

 Carpenters
 Electricians
 Plumbers

Crew members generally work long hours (10 to 12), with little, if any, time off during
their contract, and are sometimes unfortunately treated with a lack of respect by other
employees onboard a ship. Crew members usually have their own crew facilities like an
internet cafe and a crew disco but it’s not likely to find any staff members in attend-
ance.
Crew members are strictly forbidden to socialize with any passengers onboard a ship;
they are also not allowed to utilize any public elevators and stairways unless they are
working at that time. If a crew member works directly with the passengers onboard,
they will be eligible to receive tips in addition to their wages provided. Crew members
sleep 4 to 6 in a somewhat cramped specially designed crew cabin.

Staff
Staff employees on a cruise ship generally consist of upper level positions in the follow-
ing departments:

*Cruise directors and assistants

*Shore excursion employees
*Entertainment employees including musicians, dancers, and DJs
*Retail employees including those from the photography, art, and casino departments
*Spa & Salon employees
Most staff employees will have direct contact with cruise passengers with the exception
of some entertainment employees. Generally, staff work shorter hours, receive time off
while in port, and have more access to onboard facilities; depending upon the cruise
line, staff may be allowed to utilize public elevators and stairways and may also be al-
lowed to mingle with passengers. Staffs usually share a cabin with one other staff mem-
ber.

Officers

Officers are the elite group of employees on a cruise ship who oversee the nautical and
mechanical aspects of the ship, ensuring the safety of the passengers and crew at all
times. They are highly trained and report directly to the ship’s Captain. And as such,
officers have complete authority over any crew or staff member onboard the ship, plus
they also receive the highest wages paid to any employees. As a rule, an officer has the
privilege of having a private stateroom.

The Fleet
The company's fleet consists of six vessels, with two sets of three sister ships.
It has a fleet of six vessels: Seabourn Pride, Spirit, Legend, Odyssey, Sojourn, and Seabourn
Quest. Its ships make ports of call to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia, India, Arabia, and
South America amongst its destinations. Cruises range from seven days to longer ones that last for
around 100 days.

The Yachts of Seabourn is the ultimate in ultra-luxury cruise line. It is recognized for its small yachts
that provide an intimate setting with just over 200 guests, and that can travel to exotic locations that
the bigger ships cannot visit.

The first set, the Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit, and Seabourn Legend, were built during the
late 1980s and early 1990s. They are nearly identical and each weighs in at 10,000 tons.
In October 2006, Seabourn ordered three new, 32,000-ton luxury cruise ships from Genoa's T. Mariot-
ti shipyard. The first, named Seabourn Odyssey entered service in 2009, followed by the Seabourn
Sojourn in 2010 and the Seabourn Quest in June 2011. The three ships share most features.
