Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 5!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Bacolod City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning .

For the learner:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even
if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Simple Circuit

I. Learning Competency with Code

Infer the conditions to make a bulb light up. ( S5FEIIIf-6)

II. Background Information for Learners

Light bulbs make every house bright during the night. Try to look around and
count the light bulbs you have in your home. Have you ever wondered how these light
bulbs work?
In this learning activity, you will be able to know the components needed and
the conditions to make the bulb light up.

III. Activity Proper

Directions: Identify the four basic components of a Simple Circuit. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 1: Let’s Get Connected!

Materials: flashlight or penlight with battery

Procedure
1. Get the flashlight and open or dismantle it carefully.
2. Identify the components that make the flashlight bulb work or light up.
3. List down and draw the components in the Table below. Describe the use or
function of each component.

4. Observe and draw in the box below how the different components are
connected to make the light bulb work or light up. Label each component.

Guide Questions:

1. What are the components that make the bulb light up?

2. What are the conditions that make the bulb light up?
_________________________________________________________

3. What do you call to the connection of all components that make the bulb light
up? Describe it.
___________________________________________________________

The connection of electrical components that forms a path allowing electric

current to travel is called a circuit. Figure 1 shows the complete components of
a simple circuit.

2
A simple circuit contains four (4) components necessary for operation.
Table 1 discusses the 4 components of a simple circuit and its functions.

Table 1. Components of Simple Circuit and Their Function

Source / Battery
It provides energy in the simple electrical circuit.

Switch
It opens or closes the circuit. Closed circuit permits
the current to flow that makes the bulb light up or glow
(Figure 2a).
Open circuit does not permit the current to flow that
makes the bulb not to light up or glow (Figure 2b).
Load/Bulb
A load is a device that uses electrical energy. A bulb is
an example of load that produces light and heat and has
to be properly connected to a circuit. It works when the
circuit is closed.

Wires
Wires are used to connect one electrical component to
another. It provides path for the current to travel
throughout the circuit.

a) CLOSED CIRCUIT b) OPEN CIRCUIT

Figure 2. Close Circuit and Open Circuit

Figure 2 shows the diagram of closed and open circuits. Closed circuit light up
the bulb because it allows current to flow from the source or battery to the bulb through
the connecting wire. On the other hand, open circuit does not light up the bulb because
the connection is cut and current cannot flow..

Activity 3.
Directions: Analyze which picture below possibly makes the light bulb glow. Why?

VI. Answer Key

Activity 1: Let’s Get Connect!

Procedure 3.
Source / Battery
It provides energy in the simple electrical
circuit.
Switch
It controls the flow of current in the circuit.

Load/Bulb
A load is a device that uses electrical energy.

Wires
Provides path for the current to travel
throughout the circuit.
Procedure 4

1. Battery/source, wire, light bulb, switch

2. The bulb will only light up or glow if all the components are complete and they are
connected to one another where one end of the bulb is connected to one terminal of
the battery (-) and the other end of the bulb is connected to the other terminal of the
battery (+).
3. Simple circuit. It is an arrangement of the electrical components that permits current
to flow.
Activity 2
1. Source / Battery It provides energy in the simple electrical circuit.
2. Switch It controls the flow of current in the circuit.
3. Load/Bulb A load is a device that uses electrical energy.
4. Wires Provides path for the current to travel throughout the circuit.

Activity 3.
B. All the components of the circuit are present and properly connected. The circuit is closed.

Reflection:

I realized that in order for the bulb to light up all the components must be complete and they
are arrange correctly in such a way that current could travel throughout the circuit.
