Introduction

Background of the Study

The Philippines has the peak of struggles as the COVID-19

virus continues to find its way to disrupt the economy, health,
culture and education in the country. The increasing number of
infected people and th9e threat of new strains of the corona virus
has force the government to still ban the face to face classes. As a
result, Modular distance learning becomes the widely used
modality in consideration to the learners in areas where the
internet is inaccessible for online learning.

The researcher would like to conduct the Academic

Performance of the students having their effectiveness of Modular
distance learning through our new normal education. The selected
students of Grade 12 who are the respondent’s of this study. They
take the responsibility so that the researcher can gather data
information. Otherwise, this study would like to know more about
the factors that the learners who faces modules and how effective
them the Modular distance learning modality.

Statement of the Problem

The problem of this study are the factors that affecting

their Academic Performance through Modular Distance learning
Modality to the selected student of Grade 12 HUMSS-B.

1.What is the most effective module to the students

through?
1.1Online learning
1.2Modular learning
1.3Radio Broadcast
2.What are the common problem affecting to the modular
distance learning?
2.1 Overloaded task/activities
2.2 Insufficient time allotment
2.3 Poor peer communication

5
Significance of the study

This research aim to provide crucial information and

knowledge about the selected students of Grade 12 having their
effectiveness of modular distance learning modality. The students
proven that modular learning is a self learning modules that most
preferred learning system by the Department of Education (DepEd)
that help them to provide learnings for their particular studies.

In Modular distance learning, the teacher takes the

responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners. According to
the Meta-analysis on the effects of Distance learning on K-12
students' outcomes (CAVANAUGH GILLAN, KROMREY Hess,
BLOMEYER,2004) Distance education is somehow as effective as
classroom instruction. In other words, students who undergo online
or modular distance learning can have a quality education provided
that the basic needs are met.

6
Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification, the important terms use

in the study have been defined;

Modular learning- it is a form of learning delivery

modality developed by the Department of Education (DepEd) in
which learning takes place without physical interaction between
teachers and learners. It is where the students learn through
modules.
Calamba National High School- it is located in Barangay,
Calamba Cabadbaran City and it is a public school who offers
Grade 7 to Grade 12 and the following strands of Senior High
School including the respondents of this study.
Respondents- it is the students who particularly response
this study and it is where the researcher gather some data
information about this research.
Effectiveness- it is where the students response to the
researcher about the factors on how effective their modules
through modular distance learning
Teachers- it is takes the responsibility to the learners who
are giving modules to the learners so that the students can
learn and to adopt the new normal education.

7
Scope and Limitation

This research focuses on the select students of

Grade 12 who are the respondents that having their
effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning modality. In the
study the researcher find out that it is most effective that having
modular learning based on the respondents to the select
students because it is inaccessible for internet connection while
online learning and radio broadcast are less effective to the
students because it is capable only for those learners having
their stable internet connection.

Furthermore, the common problem affecting to the

students for having their Modular learning based on the select
students is overloaded task and activities due to insufficient
time allotment for the completion of activities while poor peer
communication can affect also based on the respondents
because the lack of assess to progress the students as well as
the attention, simplification of worksheets and workbooks to be
distributed to the learners that aligned the most essential
learning competencies can affect to their Academic Performance.

As a result, the researcher find out the effectiveness

of Modular distance learning modality that affect to the
Academic Performance of the students. This research was focus
only to the select students of Grade 12 in CALAMBA National
High School.

The Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning Modality

to the Academic Performance of Students

The year 2020 has been a remarkable period when

the Philippines has on the peak of struggles as the COVID-
19 virus continues to find its way to disrupt the economy,
health, culture, and education in the country. The
increasing number of infected people and the threat of new
strains of the corona virus has forced the government to
still ban the face-to-face classes. As a result, Modular
Distance Learning becomes the widely used modality in
consideration to the learners in areas where the INTERNET
is inaccessible for online learning.
Modular learning is a formed of distance
learning that uses Self Learning Modules (SLM) and is
highly convenient for most typical Filipino students. It was
also the most preferred learning system of the majority of
parents/guardian for their children . The SLM is based on
the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided
by the Department of Education.
In Modular distance learning, the teacher takes
the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners.
The students may ask assistance from the teachers via,
email, telephone, and text message/ instant messaging. For
those students who experience difficulties, the teacher will
give remedial activities.
Since Education takes place at home, the
parents play a vital role as facilitators.Their primary
function is modular learning is to establish a connection
and guide to their child (Flip Science 2020).

9
According to the Meta-analysis on the effects of
Distance learning on K-12 students' outcomes
(CAVANAUGH, GILLAN, KROMREY,Hess,
BLOMEYER,2004).Distance education is somehow as
effective as classroom instruction. In other words, students
who undergo online or modular distance learning can have
a quality education provided that the basic needs are met.
However, in the study conducted by (OLIVIO, 2021)
parents claimed that time allotment in the completion of
learning activities was insufficient since the activities were
so many. In addition, Some parents said that some topics
in the modules are so hard for them and they cannot help
and guide their children in answering the learning task.
The research then recommended a review of the learning
activities and conduct seminars for parents to guide them
in assisting their children during their "classes" at home.
This article will be emphasized the negative and
positive effects of modular distance learning both in
international and local areas to assess the effectiveness of
MDL with regards to the level of academic performance of
students.
Likewise, the result of the study of Gonzales
(2015) determined that the used of modular teaching
approach was more effective than the traditional method of
instruction. In light of the COVID- 19 pandemic where no
face-to-face classes can take place and with the problems in
the use of the INTERNET and technology, modular
distance learning is the best option to continue delivering
education that could yield good results.
On the contrary, the results of the study of
DARGO & DIMAS(2021) concluded that the academic
performance of learners after the implementation of
Modular Distance Learning (MDL) decreased.
10
This only means that face to face classes is more effective
and favorable on the part of the learners. It was also
determined that there were more negative effects of MDL
than positive ones. Based on the respondents used in the
study, they cited the reasons how the modular distance
learning creates a negative impact on the learning among
the student. First, limited interaction between the teachers
and the learner. Lastly, too many task/activities
incorporated in the modules.
To address the limitation of MDL it was hereby
recommended to have constant monitoring of teachers via
home visitation to assess the progress of the students as
well as those who need special attention, simplification of
worksheets and workbooks to be distributed to the
learners, and creation of video lesson aligned with Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC). It was also stated
that there should be an open forum among parents,
teachers and other stakeholders to explain the real scenario
at the new normal education.
In the article, "The challenges and Status of
Modular Learning: Its effect to Students' Academic Behavior
and Performance" by AGARIN 2021, it was inferred that the
teachers physical interaction with the learners influence the
learners "
