FARADIC FOOT BATH:

 Small muscles of the foot can be re-educated and facilitated by faradic stimulation under
saline water, where foot- water bath is used, because it is difficult to stimulate foot
muscles by motor point or group muscle stimulation as foot has got four layers of
muscles.
 Foot conditions like - Flat foot, Painful foot conditions with the muscular causes treated
with faradic foot bath.
 PRINCIPLE:
Place the ions under the electrode with the same charge i.e., Negative ions, Place under
the cathode and positive ions under anode. The Electrode under which ions are placed is
called…ACTIVE ELECTRODE
 Preparation for faradic foot bath:
Position the patient in sitting on plinth or chair with back well supported.
Place the patient's foot in the bath or plastic tray containing warm water to cover the
toes (water level touches the medial malleolus of foot).
 To stimulate lumbricals, place 2 electrodes transversely across the bottom of the bath
i.e. one under the heel and other obliquely under the metatarsal heads.
 To stimulate plantar Interossei, place 1 electrode on each side of foot at level of
metatarsal shafts.
 Produce several gentle contractions to allow the patient to become accustomed to the
current and then gradually increase the intensity until a strong contraction is achieved.
 Encourage the patient to perform foot and finger movements with the current.
 Abductor hallucis- place one electrode under the heel and stimulate motor point with
pen electrode
 METHOD OF APPLICATION:
1. POSITION OF PATIENT:-
Patient should be in high sitting.
Hip and knee should be at 90 degree.
Back should be well supported.
Patient should be made to sit on a plastic or a wooden stool with his or her foot in a
bath(TUB OR TRAY), containing enough warm water to cover the foot.
2. POSITION OF THERAPIST:-
Sitting on a low level height stool in front of the patient or on either side.
But should be free to reach apparatus and handling dials of the apparatus as well as reaching
the patient’s foot without any difficulty
 INDICATIONS:
FLAT FOOT
METATARSALAGIA
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS(IN FOOT)
HALLUX VALGUS

FARADISM UNDER PRESSURE:

 ES of muscle combined with compression and elevation of the limb can be used to
increase venous and lymphatic drainage and so to relieve edema.
 This technique is known as Faradism Under Pressure
 "Increased venous and lymphatic return is brought about by the pumping action of the
alternate muscle contraction and relaxation." (Clayton, 1959.)
 "The contraction causes an inward pressure on the tissue spaces and veins and so
propels fluid towards the heart. (Savage, 1960.)
 Patient in supine position
 The limb is elevated above the heart level using pillows
 The pressure bandage is applied over the electrode, with maximum pressure distal to
proximal
 The skin must be cleaned before treatment
 Placement of electrode for lower limb:
Active electrode place over the belly of the calf muscle
Passive electrode is placed over the sole of the foot
 Placement of electrode for upper limb:
Active electrode over the flexor aspect of forearm at the junction of proximal 1/3 and
distal 2/3 of the muscle belly
The passive electrode over the palm or cubital fossa
 A surged faradic current is used for this
 Surge duration 3 sec.
 Surge interval 9 sec.
 Intensity enough to produce a visible contraction of the muscles i.e. clenching of toes or
fingers.
 Treatment time: 15-30 minutes
 Rectangular metal or carbon rubber electrodes of 3 X 5 cm. can be used
 Encourage the patient to do active movement along with the current and relax during
surge interval
