REFLECTION PAPER

A helping profession is one that nurtures the growth of or addresses the

problems of a person's physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional or spiritual well-
being. At this stage of my life Social Work is what I am most interested in practicing
because it provides opportunities for me to work in many different settings with people
whose problems, issues and needs are diverse. My second choice would then be
guidance counseling which is the process of helping individuals discover and develop
their educational, vocational, and psychological potentialities and thereby achieve an
optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness.
I am interested in the helping profession because I have a strong desire to help others
in difficult situations.
This can affect my work when I get cases that are similar to that particular
situation. I may be biased in the way I go about dealing with the case because my
feelings and thoughts about that particular situation is embedded. It is then my
responsibility as a Social Worker to separate my personal feeling/ views about issues so
that it doesn’t affect my work and my ability to be non-judgmental and fair.
Throughout this semester the content covered by this course never failed to
interest me and provide me with a surprising new perspective on many topics. Coming
into social work, I knew little more than what Hollywood has portrayed in movies. My
idea of a social worker was someone who tried to help those in abusive situations and
most of the time when they tried to help they didn’t. I viewed social workers as
disconnected from their clients and trying to help but not knowing the whole story and
not really fixing the real problem. I am so glad that I was proved wrong by what I learned
in this course.
I think the main core values and roles of social workers include being a rock and
just a person of strength and support to those who don’t have a support system in their
life. Social workers are there to help support, listen to, and offer advice to those who
may have had a rough life. I learned the social workers are as immune to their clients
life or problems as the media or society might portray them. Instead social workers are
a little less than a 24/7 life coach, they help with almost any situation and know of tons
of resources available to you within your community. Like many other professions, there
is controversial issues with the social work practice, and not all social workers can
handle the pressure of being depended on so much.
Overall, I kept myself reflecting on my behavior as a social worker student and my
practicing of social work theories and knowledge. I stood on the ground of my residents
to think more to facilitate their lives. I prioritized their well being and safety when
organizing any activities with them. I quickly responded for emergencies like residents
wandering, agitated, aggressive, depressive, repetitive asking for leaving or packaging
up or experiencing blue mood.

I suddenly find that I love this course more than ever before and feel more confidence in
my future study.
