1(a) A function from A to A, where A is the set of positive integers, is given by f(x) = the sum of
all factors of x. If p is a prime number and f(p) = 24, find f(p2).
(b) Given that the expression x2 – 5x + 7 leaves the same remainder when divided by x – b or x –
c, where b ≠ c , show that b + c = 5.
2(a) The coefficient of x3 in the expansion of ( 1 - ax )6 is 60, find the value of a.
(b) For two numbers a and b, the A.M is 3 and G.M is 2√ 2. Find a2 + b2.

3(a) If the multiplicative inverse of the matrix ( 1x 31) is −15 (−21 −31 ). Find x and the additive
inverse of A.
(b) The probability that an experiment will be successful is twice the probability that it will fail.
If the experiment is repeated 180 times, find the number of successes to be expected.
4(a) Given (3a-b) @ (a+3b) = a2 – 3ab + 4b2, evaluate 4 @ 8.
(b) Find the solution set of an inequation (x – 2)(5x – 4) + 1 > 0.
5(a) In trapezium ABCD, AB is twice DC and AB // DC. If AC and BD intersect at O, prove that
α(∆AOB) = 4 α(∆COD)
(b) Two circles intersect at M, N and from M diameters MA, MB are drawn in each circle. If A,
B be joined to N, prove ANB a straight line.

6(a) If f and g are functions such that f-1(x) = x + 1 and f(g(x)) = 3x – 1. Find the formula of ( g .
f )-1(x) and ( g . f-1 )(x).
(b) Solve the equation 6x3 + x2 – 19x + 6 = 0.
7(a) A binary operation @ on the set of integers is defined by a @ b = xy + x + y. Find ( 1 @ 3 )
@ 2 and 1@ ( 3 @ 2). Is @ associatative? Why?

8(a) If f and g are functions such that f(x) = 2 x + 1 and g(x) = x2 + 3x – 4, x ∈ R. Find the set of
values of x for which f-1(x) < g(x).
(b) An arithmetic progression contains 30 terms. Given that the sum of the first 10 terms is 230
and the sum of the last 10 terms is 630. Find the sum of the middle 10 terms
9(a) The first term of a G.P is 3 and the common ratio is 0.25. Find the sum to infinity, and the
least value of n for which the sum to n terms differs from the sum to infinity by less than 0.004.

(b) Given that A = (31 24) and B = (3k 24k ), find the value of k such that det (B) = - 2 and hence,
find the 2x2 matrix P for which PB-1 = A.
10(a) Solve the following system of equations by matrix method.
x + 3y = 6, y + 2x = 4.
(b) A coin is tossed three times. Head or tail is recorded each time. Draw a tree diagram . Find
the probability of exactly one tail and find also the probability that at least one tail. If this coin is
tossed 300 times, what is the expected frequency of “ Head ”.

( Answer THREE questions )

11(a) If A, B, C are three points on the circumference of a circle such that the chord AB is equal
to the chord AC, prove that the tangent at A bisects the exterior angle between AB and AC.

(b) In ∆PQR, ∠ P = 90 and PS⊥ QR. If QR = 3 PQ, prove that SR = 8 QS.

12(a) AB is a diameter of a circle and E is any point on the circumference. From any point C on
AB produced, a line is drawn perpendicular AB, meeting AE produced at D. Prove that AE . AD
= AB . AC.

(b) ABC is a triangle such that BC : CA : AB = 3 : 4 : 5. If BPC, CQA and ARB are equilateral
triangles, prove that α(∆ BPC) + α(∆ CQA) = α(∆ ARB).

13(a) The probabilities that the students A and B will pass an examination are 2/3 and ¾
respectively. Find the probabilities that (i) both A and B pass the examination, (ii) exactly one of
A and B passes the examination.

(b) ∆ABC is an isosceles right triangle with A the right angle. E and D are points on opposite
side of AC, with E on the same side of AC as B, such that ACD and BCE are both equilateral.
Prove that α(∆BCE) = 2α(∆ACD)

14(a) OA and OB are two radii of a circle meeting at right angles. From A, B two parallel chords
AX, BY are drawn. Prove AY ⊥BX.

(b) The sum to n terms of an A.P. is 21. The common differfnce is 4 and the sum to 2n terms is
78, find the first term.
