GEOGRAPHY PROJECT- Types of rocks

by Aarnav
WHAT ARE ROCKS?
What are rocks?
In geology, a rock is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or
mineraloid matter. It is categorized by the minerals included, its chemical composition and
the way in which it is formed. There are 3 types of rocks (basically three ways rocks are
formed)…
The 3 types of rocks

IGNEOUS ROCK
Igneous rocks (from the Latin word for fire)
form when hot, molten rock crystallizes and
solidifies. The melt originates deep within the
Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots,
then rises toward the surface. Molten rock when
its inside the earth (core) is called magma and
when it comes out through volcanoes its called
lava.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
Clastic sedimentary rocks are made up of pieces
(clasts) of pre-existing rocks. Pieces of rock are
loosened by weathering, then transported to some
basin or depression where sediment is trapped. If the
sediment is buried deeply, it becomes compacted and
cemented, forming sedimentary rock. Sedimentary
rocks are formed when sediment is deposited out of
air, ice, wind, gravity, or water flows carrying the
particles in suspension. This sediment is often formed
when weathering and erosion break down a rock into
loose material in a source area.
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
Metamorphic rocks form when rocks are subjected to
high heat, high pressure, hot mineral-rich fluids or,
more commonly, some combination of these factors.
Conditions like these are found deep within the Earth
or where tectonic plates meet. They are formed from
other rocks that are changed because of heat or
pressure. As a result, the rocks are heated and put
under great pressure. They do not melt, but the
minerals they contain are changed chemically,
forming metamorphic rocks.
CONCLUSION
Igneous rocks are formed from melted rock deep
inside the Earth. Sedimentary rocks are formed from
layers of sand, silt, dead plants, and animal skeletons.
Metamorphic rocks formed from other rocks that are
changed by heat and pressure underground. They all
basically are formed from lava cooling and heat and
pressure.
