CHAPTER I
Introduction
For the past years, many things have changed, especially with students. In the
past, there were no internet cafes and online games. The students are good learners. As
time goes by, when internet Café and online games were established, some students were
distracted because of this innovation. Some students learned how to miss class or not
attend school because they went to internet cafes to play online games. They use their
time in the internet instead of studying without their parent’s awareness. This is one of the
reasons why the grades of the students fluctuates. Parents expected their child to study
well, but they do not know what their children were doing, whether they go to school or
not.
The reason why the researchers created a system to monitor student’s attendance

processing.

take attendance based on the card scanned. A radio frequency signal is generated and
transmitted to the surrounding using an RFID antenna reader. If a card is swiped, a small
force is induced from the radio wave to the RFID tag and allow modulated electromagnetic
wave that can be returned to the reader. And the reader receives the modulated signal
from the tag and produces an output in Wieg and 26-bit format. The output is sent to the
microcontroller via the data line for further processing. The microcontroller receives data
from the reader and re -establishes the signal in wieg and 26 bit format. The result will be
used to compare with the ID stored in microcontroller. If this RFID Card cannot be received
by the RFID reader it will blink a red light, which means you have to repeat swiping your
Conceptual Literature
This project RFID based attendance system uses RFID technology to make a note
of every student entering into the classroom and also to calculate the time resides in the
class. In this proposed system, every student is allotted with an RFID tag. The process of
attendance can be done by placing the card near the RFID reader and not only this but
we have introduced some more functions in this project. The term RFID (radio frequency
identification) is one type of electronic device includes a small antenna and a chip. This
device is used to transmit the information like persons, animals, books or any stuff
between the reader and RFID tag using radio frequency electromagnetic fields. It is
capable of carrying 2k bytes of data. There are different kinds of RFID systems in the
market, which consist of an antenna, a transponder, and a transceiver. Some types of tags
can be located close to the RFID reader and some tags can be located far from the reader.
The operating frequency ranges of these devices mainly include low, mid and high ranges.
The low-frequency range is from 30kHz to 500kHz, mid-frequency range is from 900kHz
to 1500kHz and high-frequency range is 2.4kHz to 2.5kHz. RFID reader must be scanned
Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). AIDC methods automatically identify
objects, collect data about them, and enter those data directly into computer systems with
little or no human intervention. RFID methods utilize radio waves to accomplish this. At a
simple level, RFID systems consist of three components: an RFID tag or smart label, an
RFID reader, and an antenna. RFID tags contain an integrated circuit and an antenna,
which is used to transmit data to the RFID reader (also called an interrogator). The reader
then converts the radio waves to a more usable form of data. Information collected from
the RFID Card is then transferred through a communications interface to a host computer
system, where the data can be stored in a database and analyzed at a later time.
Research Literature
affects the overall academic performance of Students. Currently, in some institutions, the
attendance is taken by calling or signing in registers. Very time consuming and space
consuming. So, in this paper the researchers wants to present an RFID and GSM Based
Attendance Monitoring System. In this paper RFID Reader receives the data from RFID
tag. Each student is issued an RFID tag. A predefine program is stored in this tag for
Student ID. Whenever the Student enters into the institution, he has to sweep that RFID
tag near RFID Reader that is attached externally to our microcontroller based embedded
system. At that moment the reader will checks whether the information of the students is
correct or not and then it will decide whether the student is permitted to enter or leave. If
the student's information is correct then the guard of the institution will be permitted to
enter the student inside. And if the information is not correct then he will not permit to go
inside. The Student Details will be indicated on the Led lights and send through GSM SIM
to parents to display whether the student is present or not. The designed system provides
an acknowledgement to the parents whose attendance has been taken and when. This

This system can be used to take attendance for students in school, colleges and
universities. It can also be used in taking attendance of workers in working places. Its
ability to uniquely identify each person based on their RFID tag type of ID card make the
process of taking the attendance easier, faster, and secure as compared to conventional
method. Students or workers only need to place their ID card on the reader and their
attendance will be taken immediately. With real time clock capability of the system,
attendance taken will be more accurate since the time for the attendance will be recorded.
