English I: Conversation:

This course will enhance student awareness of the most relevant features of English
pronunciation; Stress, rhythm, and intonation. This course encourages students to use the
English language frequently and to express themselves with confidence. Students will have
an opportunity to explore and strengthen conversational skills and cultural awareness.
Students also will have an opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of grammar and
vocabulary by focusing on form while listening.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Understand and summarize dialogues between native and English speakers


as demonstrated through completion of listening activities and tests.
○ Participate in conversations concerning common topics from their
involvement in class discussions and other activities directed by the
instructor.
○ GIve quick responses to questions regarding materials covered in class as
demonstrated through class participation and quizzes.
○ Communicate effectively with new grammar structures as evidenced by
participating successfully in a variety of speaking exercises and quizzes.

Speech Presentation
This course is an introduction to public speaking. It will enable students to learn and
practice their delivery skills (e.g. vocal variety, eye contact, and articulation) as well as their
writing skills including effective organization and use of descriptive language through
introductory informative and impromptu speeches. Students are required to give a final
presentation at the end of the program.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Analyze information and tailor presentations to target audiences and


environmental settings.
○ Research on their topic.
○ Arrange central ideas and main points.
○ Give effective speeches by determining methods of delivery and applying
elements of non-verbal communication.
○ Objectively complete self-evaluations as well as evaluations of other
speakers.

Business English
This course aims to instruct students to improve their business communication and writing
skills within general business situations including professionals in education, sales,
customer service, and more.
Learning Outcomes:

○ To communicate with others in practical, business oriented situations.


○ To express themselves in English with greater fluency, accuracy, and
confidence.
○ To handle themselves in English in a variety of business contexts such as
negotiating, using a telephone, making presentations, and socializing.

American Culture
This class is designed for senior high school ESL speakers at the beginning to intermediate
levels. Students will become better at communicating more fluently and effectively in
English. Unlike the English conversation class, however, this course uses the English
language as the medium to introduce and explain to become more aware and appreciative
of cross-cultural communications.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Recognize and understand characteristics of American culture and history by


reading and discussing topics outlined in the class reader.
○ Talk to Americans by participating in one-on-one exchange with the teacher
and with the conversation partners.
○ Comprehend physical gestures and cultural norms used by American
speakers during communication (accomplished by discussing and practicing
the gestures and customs described in the class reader).
○ Understand and appreciate some of the attributes of their own culture by
discussing how their culture differs from American practices.
○ Exhibits better overall speaking skills and an increased vocabulary by
participating in partner dialog and group/class discussions.

Hawaiian Culture
This beginning level culture course offers students an opportunity to explore the variety of
ethnicities which are unique to Hawaii while developing their English communication skills.
Hawaii has a long and unique history and culture. Students will learn basic aspects of
ancient and present-day culture of Hawaii. They will also learn about cultural similarities
and differences between their country and Hawaii as well as the importance of
cross-cultural communication.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Demonstrate proper use of some common Hawaiian words and phrases by


repetitive classroom usage.
○ Describe the geography and places of interest in Hawaii by discussing and
completing quizzes on the Hawaiian Island chain.
○ Recognize and understand some of the history of Hawaii by reading and
completing the exercises in the class reader, discussing topics, and
experiencing cultural activities.
○ Identify similarities and differences between their own culture and Hawaiian
culture.

Intercultural Communication
Intercultural Communication in its most basic form “seeks to understand how people from
different countries and cultures behave, communicate and perceive the world around
them. The findings of such academic research are then applied to ‘real life’ situations such
as how to create cultural synergy between people from different cultures within a business
or organization.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Self and other awareness through communication training.


○ Building a realistic and positive confidence in personal judgments, abilities,
and powers.
○ Changing perspectives: Tries to understand actions and reactions of others
from their own point of view.
○ Empathy: Show interest in others and share emotions and communications.
○ Open-mindedness: Is open towards new ideas and experiences as well as
functions effectively with people of other worldviews.
○ Communication ability: Fully appreciates what others are saying and thinking.
○ Tolerance: Is free from bigotry and prejudice, accepts and advocates
diversity.
○ Sensitivity. Is sensitive to the importance of differences and to the point of
view of other people.

Cross Cultural Discussion


This course is an introduction to cross cultural discussion. It will enable students to
experience cross-cultural contact with Americans, learn discussion language and
techniques, and practice their discussion skills as well as their critical thinking skills by
participating in discussions on various topics. Students will lead a discussion based on a
topic they have chosen and researched at the end of the program.

Learning Outcomes:

○ Use english discussion language and techniques.


○ Think critically about American culture.
○ Compare and contrast American culture and own culture.
○ Research a topic and write discussion questions.
○ Lead a discussion on a topic of choice.
