Topic of Interest : Employability of BSIE Graduates

Proposed Title : Graduate Tracer of the Bachelor of Science in Industrial

Education of Bicol University College of Industrial Technology

Rationale
Students prefer pursuing college degrees at universities where their skills for

career opportunities can be improved. This is to ensure that they are ready and

prepared for the professional world that awaits them when they graduate. Given that

they are successful, Graduates' success in their professional fields favour not only

themselves, but also their alma mater. However, the students’ efforts and the relevance

of their universities’ programs, as well as the employability of their graduates, pose a

growing challenge particularly in regarding two sets of statistics: Enrolment and

Unemployment among young people.

Being enrolled and graduating is a far-fetched challenge in itself, but being

employed is another challenge, as well. There are numerous reasons why people,

become unemployed. It cannot be settled that most professions only rely on an

individual’s knowledge, it requires other skills too. It is considered that the essence of a

college graduate is not merely an impression of the educational modules and their

supporting learning environment, given that there is a broad understanding and

standard when it comes to employability. A college graduate also represents their

university’s standards and also the expertise of its regulatory body to determine the

characteristics of its graduates in higher education.

The growth of the economy of a country is increasingly dependent on its human

capital, and the quality of the human resources of a nation is indistinctly related to

efficiency and effectiveness, not only in its instructional system, but also in its

educational and training institutions (Slaus, I. and Jacobs, G. , 2011).1

The persistent gap between the skills provided by the workforce and those

needed by the labor market is one of the biggest problems facing countries today

across the world.

As a developing country, the Philippines faces the same problems that have

been impacted mainly by high unemployment and underemployment rates for decades.

The rising population and growing labor force continue to outpace structured job growth.

In addition, in the Philippines, where government human capital banks are forced to

maintain hyper-economic projections, academic institutions are obliged to supply high-

quality graduates to meet the requirements of a highly competitive global labor market.

In order to provide them with qualified professionals to operate their plants and offices,

the local industry often relies on universities. National growth would be slowed and

economic progress would be undermined without a steady supply of young and talented

individuals. The task of universities, therefore, is to develop their educational systems

and to meet international standards ( De Ocampo, R., Bagano, A.J. and Tan, A.L.,

2012).2

The sector of higher education is characterized by diversity in which the profiles

of programs and students are different and their role is to produce students with

different characteristics or attributes. Universities and colleges have been taking various

approaches in which the employability skills of students are developed. For example,

they have provided appropriate support and resources to their students with qualified

academic staff, providing advice and guidance through career services, opportunities to

engage in their university life in clubs/associations/organizations. In the case of

business schools, significant attention has been paid to clarifying precisely which skills

should be developed, and how, but much less so, to assess the provision of

employability skills and their effect on graduate job readiness. (Jackson, Sibson and

Riebe, 2013).3

The terms "employability" or "employability skills" refer to a collection of more

standardized abilities and competencies. Personal qualities that can be summarized as

a positive mindset are essential to being employable, in particular. A positive mindset

encapsulates features such as a desire to contribute and openness to new activities and

thoughts. Equally, knowledge is an important part of what makes you employable. In

short, employability is better understood as: a collection of characteristics, skills and

expertise that should be possessed by all labor market participants to ensure that they

can be successful in the workplace for the benefit of themselves, their employer and the

wider economy (Jackson, D. 2016).4

The 21st Century Skills Partnership (www.21stcenturyskills.com) 5 has developed

a 21st century learning framework that identifies the skills students need to acquire in

today's global economy, namely: skills in learning and innovation; skills in information,

RESEARCH 1: TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH 1 | Learning Task Number 05

media and technology; and life and career skills. P21, the leading advocacy

organization, focuses on infusing education with skills of the 21st century. In order to

define a powerful vision for 21st century education to ensure the progress of students

as people and workers in the 21st century, the organization brings together the

business community, education leaders and policymakers.

The benefits of evaluating employability skills apply to all stakeholders in

undergraduate education. Educators may better quantify their contribution to graduate

work-readiness and are alerted to areas of vulnerability that require changes in their

methods, quality of the curriculum, learning experiences and/or evaluation. Graduates

would be better equipped to promote their own employability skills capabilities directly.

Finally, the results of the assessment would demonstrate certain areas that would

benefit from industry assistance and involvement, such as integrating the curriculum

and evaluation of technical learning programs.

This tracer study of the graduates of Bachelor in Industrial Education from 2017

of Bicol University College of Industrial Technology seeks to determine the profile and

employment status of respondents, the most useful skills of graduates that they used in

their employment such as life and career skills, learning and innovation skills,

information, media and technology skills, and whether there is a significant relationship

between the profile and the employment status of respondents. Further, this study aims

to determine the recommendations of the respondents to make curricular offerings more

relevant to existing jobs.

Similarly, the results of the study will serve as the basis for the institution to

improve, update, or enhance the BTVTED curriculum to better serve the needs of

industries.

The growth of the economy of a country is increasingly dependent on

its human capital, and the quality of the human resources of a nation is

indistinctly related to efficiency and effectiveness, not only in its

instructional system, but also in its educational and training institutions

2. Topic Area 2: Higher Education

Supporting Points:
Higher education plays a key role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development. It underpins all the SDGs and trains the
future leaders.
The sector of higher education is characterized by diversity in which
the profiles of programs and students are different and their role is to
produce students with different characteristics or attributes.
Universities and colleges have been taking various approaches in
which the employability skills of students are developed. For example,

5. Topic Area 5: Tracer Study

Supporting Points:
A tracer study is a graduate survey in which a survey (in written or oral
form) of graduates from educational institutions is carried out sometime
after graduation or at the end of the training period.
The topics of a tracer study can be varied, but typical topics include
questions about the progress of the study, the transition to work, entry
to work, profession, use of learned skills, current occupation and bonds
to the educational institution (school, centre, university).
