Illustrations of Quadratic Equations

I. OBJECTIVES:
Content Standards:
The learner demonstrates understanding of the key concept about Quadratic Equations.
Performance Standard:
The learner is able to apply the concepts of Quadtratic Equations to solve real life-
problems with precision and accuracy.
Learning Competencies:
At the end of the activities, the students should be able to:
1. Define Quadtratic Equations
2. Arrange the given Quadtratic Equations in standard form.
3. Determine the value of a, b and c
II. CONTENT:
Learning Resources:
References: E-Math 9 and Mathematics Learner’s Material 9
Materials: Prepared examples and excercises on manila paper/cartolina
III. PROCEDURES:

A. Recall/ Review / Connecting to Prior knowledge

Present the following to the students
1. x ²−5 x +3=0
2. 2 s +3 t=−7
3. x +5 x=3
Ask the following questions to the students
1. Which of the given equations are linear?
2. How do you describe linear equations?
3. Which of the given equations are not linear?
4. How are these equations different from those which are linear?
5. What common characteristics do these equations have?

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Present to the student the following
A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can
be written in the following standard form.
ax ²+bx +c=0
a, b and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0
In the equation ax ² is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term, and c is the constant
term.

When b = 0 in the equation ax ²+bx +c=0, it result to a quadratic equation of the form
ax ²+c =0

Example 1
1. 5 x ²+3 x=2 2. x ²+3 x=10 3. x ²+5=2

Example 2
3x(x - 2) = 10 is a quadratic equation. However, it is not written in the standard form.
3x(x-2) = 10 3 x 2−6 x=10 Apply distributive property
3 x ²−6 x−10=10−10 Additive inverse
3 x ²−6 x−10=0 Standard Form

a=3 b=-6 c = - 10
Example 3
The equation ( 2x + 5 )( x – 1 ) = -6 is also a quadtratic equation but it is not written in
standard form.
( 2x + 5 )( x – 1 ) = -6 2 x2 −2 x +5 x−5=−6
2
2 x +3 x−5=−6
2 x2 +3 x−5+6=−6 +6
2 x2 +3 x +1=0
a=2 b= 3 c= 1
C. Exercises for fixing new skills.
Ask the students to give their own example of quadratic equation and identify the
value of a, b, and c.

D. Generalization
Guide the students in summarizing the lesson they have acquired. Ask the following
question
How do will you apply the concept of Quadratic Equations in real life situation.

E. Evaluation
Arrange the following in standard form and identify the value of a, b and c
1. 2 t ²−7 t=12
2. 3 x ( x−2 ) =−7
3. ( w – 8 )(w + 5 ) = 14
