SEWING MACHINE

Sewing Machine – equipment used in sewing activities


Types of Sewing Machine
1. Lockstitch Sewing Machine- also called as Domestic Sewing Machine. Used in homes and
sometimes in school
2. Hi-Speed Lockstitch – straight stitching machine used in industrial.
3. Over Edging Machine - small machine. Use only 3-5 thread only
4. Embroidery Machine – used in making fancy stitches and embroidery.
5. Button Holler Machine - used in making buttonholes
6. Button Attachment Machine - attaching buttonholes
Parts of the Sewing Machine
Upper Parts
1. Head – complete machine without stand/cabinet
2. Arm – curve part of the head
3. Bed - flat portion of the machine
Parts of the machine in the upper part of the arm
1. Spool Pin – holds the spool thread 8. Presser Foot – holds the fabric
2. Thread Pin–keeps thread in position 9. Needle – slender tool
3. Thread Take – Release the thread 10. Bobbin Winder – Controls the Bobbin
4. Presser bar lifter – moves the foot 11. Stitch Regulator – check length
5. Tension - control the tightness 12. Balance Wheel - mechanism
6. Needles Bar – holds the needle 13. Belts – connects the wheels
7. Needle Clamp – tightens the needle 14. Stop Motion Screw -hinders moving

1. Band Wheel – Leads the wheel 6. Dress Guard – protect the dress
2. Band wheel Crank – moves the wheel 7. Treadle – where the feet is
3. Pitman Rod - holds the treadle 8. Leg Support – cabinet of the machine
4. Belt Guide – hold the belt 9. Cabinet – holds the head of the machine
5. Belt Shifter - removes the belt

Parts of Machine under the bed


1. Bobbin – metal spool used 4. Throat Plate - windows of the feed
2. Bobbin Case – holds the bobbin dog
3. Feed Dog – moves the fabric while 5. Slide Plate – movable metal plate

MEASURING TOOLS
Measuring tools – used in measuring fabrics pattern and body.
Types of Measuring Tools
1. Tape Measure - used in taking body measurements
2. Sewing Gauge – small ruler with sliding guide
3. Rulers – Used to draw straight seam lines. Has 12 inches long wood or metal
4. L- Square – tailor square L used to transfer measurements to draft pattern
5. French Curve – used to outline the depth of the neckline
6. Yardstick – made of smooth hardwood or metal.
7. Hip Curve – used to shape hip portion of skirt.

BODY MEASUREMENTS

Body Measurement -is the process of measuring the whole part of the body.

Parts that is measured

1. Neck – loosely measure around the circumference

2. Bust – Measure around your body over the fullest bust

3. Bust to Bust – one nipple to the other nipple

4. Upper Bust – torso directly above the bust line

5. Lower Bust – torso directly under the bust line

6. Waist - narrowest natural waistline point

7. Hips – fullest part of the hips

8. Should to bust – tip of the shoulder to center of the bust (nipple)

9. Front shoulder to waist – tip of shoulder to natural waistline

10. Shoulder to shoulder – across the back of neck (socket-socket)

11. Shoulder to neck - base of neck to the shoulder socket

12. Down Center back – nape of neck to natural waist

13. Back to shoulder to waist – tip of shoulder to natural waist

14. Across back – armhole back (8cm down from neck)

15. Full back – measure from side beam under the armpits

16. Sleeve Hole – around the shoulder under the armpit


17. Bicep – fullest part of the upper arm

18. Elbow – around the bent elbow

19. Under Arm – under armpit to wrist

20. Over Arm – outer shoulder to wrist

21. Side Seam – under armpit to waistline down

22. Upper Arm – outer shoulder to crook of elbow

Mens Apparel

1. Shirt Length – nape down to center back

2. Sleeve Length – shoulder tip to desired sleeve length

3. Length of the pants – below waist band to desired pants length

4. Crotch or rise – ruler under the crotch

5. Waist – smallest part of waistline

6. Desired Bottom or Hem Circumference – around the fullest part of the bottom.

METRIC SYSTEM – decimal measuring system (meter, liter, gram)

ENGLISH SYSTEM – used in many countries (feet, pounds and seconds)

HORIZONTAL MEASUREMENT – left of the figure to the right


CIRCUMFERENTIAL - wrapping the tape around a particular part of the body.

VERTICAL MEASUREMENT - taken from top to its base
