1. About the Project:

Participatory Research and Ownership with Technology, Information, and Change (PROTIC) is a
collaboration between Monash Faculty of Information Technology and OXFAM with a vision to
develop deployable Digital Citizenship strategies, tools, and techniques considering culture,
language, socio-economic factors for the two marginalized communities: fisherfolk and domestic
workers in Bangladesh to be enabled through Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT).
The word ‘PROTIC’ means a sign or symbol in Bengali, therefore articulating a symbol of
development and progress, a sign of digitisation, a token of recognition (of community voice), and
an image of action research. PROTIC II is the second phase of PROTIC- a five-year international
development project that was dedicated to articulating the impact of societal digital
transformation initiatives on disadvantaged and low-literacy communities.

The position holder will have the opportunity to be capacitated in qualitative and spatial research
through working with Monash University, Australia.

2. What we are looking for:

We are looking for a student or early-career professional who is agile and have the capacity to
work with fisherfolk communities, and have prior experience in qualitative research, preferably
with training or experience to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and tools.

The volunteer will work under the PROTIC II project from the Climate Justice and Natural Resource
Rights (CJNRR) portfolio to ensure and achieve the following outcomes of PROTIC II:

I. Fisherfolk leaders equipped with more organised data and insights to negotiate with
market actors and fisheries decision-makers.
II. Domestic workers have improved knowledge and capacity to share their challenges, learn
about their rights and ways to claim them using digital technology

Key qualifications, competencies, and experience required:

Required:

• A bachelor’s degree in any social or environmental science or related disciplines. Those


who have appeared in the finals but results pending can also apply.

Desirable

• Understanding of ICT integration in natural resource rights and climate justice context.
• Experience in voluntary work, social research, and social activism.
• Engagement with marginalized vulnerable communities.
• Excellent analytical writing skills in Bangla and English.
• Knowledge of mixed method research with interpersonal communication skills.
• Analysis of qualitative data using the thematic application (e.g., NVivo and ATLAS.ti or
any).
• Technical skills in ESRI ArcGIS Suite and experience in providing GIS support to research
projects
• Value alignment for environmental justice, rights-based approach and feminist
principles.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Undertaking discussions and interviews with stakeholders.


• Providing GIS and data management support (highly desirable)
• Supporting in Translation, transcription, analysis, and analytical write-up.
• Working as rapporteur on need base in events and visits.
• Volunteers may have to travel to Chandpur, Kurigram, and other potential riverine and
coastal areas.

PROTIC II works with the Climate Justice and Natural Resource Rights team, which is a portfolio of
Oxfam in Bangladesh to enable vulnerable people from all genders including youth to have
reduced loss and damage from climate change impacts and increased benefit from common pool
ecosystem goods and services, through more power and leadership at the community level.
