7.3 Pipework and Fittings Above Ground

All pipework and fittings shall conform to British Standards and to LPC Technical Bulletin1. All
pipework shall be galvanised steel medium weight to BS 1387/1967 or BS 3601 for over 150 mm
diameter. All pipework shall comply with Clause 21 of BS 5306 and be suitable for the designed
system pressures.

Open pipework, such as multiple control discharge pipes shall be medium weight, galvanised steel
to BS 1387 with galvanised malleable iron fittings to BS 143, screwed to BS 21.

Screwed fittings shall be malleable iron, black to BS 143 and screwed to BS 21. The jointing shall
be made using P.T.F.E tape or jointing compound and hemp. Excess jointing material shall be
removed immediately after the joint is made.

All pipework fabrication shall be undertaken at the Specialist suppliers work and inspected in the
workshop where welding methods and procedures shall be in accordance with the provision of BS
2640, BS 2971 or Heating and Ventilation Contractors Association Manual Welding of Mild Steel
Pipework.

Welding shall be executed by Welders who hold the appropriate Certificate of Competency as
issued by the National Joint Industries Council of the Heating and Ventilation Industry.

All pipework shall have a gradient to Table 42 of BS 5306 in order to facilitate drainage of the
sprinkler system. No pipework joint shall be made within the thickness of walls, floors or ceilings.

Pipe supports shall in general be fixed to the building structure. Pipe supports and spacing shall
conform to Clause 22 BS 5306.

7.4 Block Plan

The CONTRACTOR shall provide the below mentioned accessories/drawing/plans for the subject
equipment: -

One location plate bearing the words "SPRINKLER STOP VALVE INSIDE" shall be provided
and fixed on the outside of the sprinkler valve chamber. The location plate shall consist of white
lettering on a black background with the words "SPRINLER STOP VALVE" at least 35 mm high
and word "INSIDE" at least 25 mm high.

Plans of the premises including the location of the sprinkler stop valve and area of protection
which the valve controls shall be fixed on a suitable position near the entrance so as to be readily
visible to Civil Defence or other persons responding to the alarm.

Further plans shall be installed in the pump room and adjacent to all valve sets indicating main
valve locations, drain down locations and control head discharge locations.
