ACTIVITY NO.

DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions.

1. Identify the parallel events in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibustirismo that are still relevant to the
situation of the Philippines at present.

➢ Even though many years have gone, we cannot deny that our nation is still facing some of the same
problems that Dr. Jose Rizal describes in his most famous works. Today, the Philippines, a country with a
population of over 115 million people and a wealth distribution in which fewer than one percent of the
population has the majority of the wealth, is plagued by the societal disease that Rizal criticized in his
two great works, Noli Me Tangere and El Fili Busterismo. One of the most prevalent is corruption. This
may be observed in some of the elected officials, including mayors, governors, congressmen, senators,
and others, who ran for office with the intention of making money rather than serving the public. using
tax payer funds to support initiatives that would feed their own greed Poverty is one of them, and it's
still an issue today. Even if the modern world has created more work options, poverty is still one of the
nation's biggest problems, as seen by the novel. Two more are injustice and abuse. The poor continue to
suffer from social injustice that is both institutional and structural in nature. There are provinces in our
nation that are now suffering with this issue as a result of corrupt politicians, even if we might not see it
in our area. The impoverished and marginalized farmers, small fisher men, tenants, and casuals, as well
as migrant workers who endure in dirty, tough, hazardous, disgusting, and dishonest professions
overseas, still do not have access to quality education.

2. What for you is the definition of freedom?

➢ As a teenager, freedom means doing things that I want, like hanging out with my friends or
going somewhere I want, eating foods that I relish, wearing clothes that I like, and not having to fear
expressing my thoughts and opinions, ensuring that others' respect and feelings are not hurt, and also
doing things that are right. Freedom to me means being able to make decisions and choices
independently, as well as being able to breathe freely. And as a girl, freedom is the most important thing
in my life to live confidently. By this, I mean, being allowed to choose the career that I want to pursue.
To me, freedom is getting an opportunity to know who I really am and discover my strengths and
weaknesses. This would enable me to be brave and face the world without fear, because I would know
myself inside and out. However, enjoying freedom does not mean that we should disregard the rights of
others and live the way we feel is right. We still have to consider the rights and feelings of people
around us when living our freedom.

3. How is the lack of freedom portrayed in the novel?

➢ The novel shows a lack of freedom by focusing on the fact that the government was controlled
by the Spanish, who put an emphasis on commerce with other nations. In addition, it is required that all
vessels use the Spanish flag. In the city of Manila, nipa homes were being demolished during the time.
People from the Philippines were referred to as Indios, which is a classic example of discrimination.
Education was restricted to those families who belonged to the Ilustrados and their descendants. There
is no academic freedom for women in the Philippines to attend universities. They are also not allowed to
engage in professional jobs or work freely with men, but they are allowed to own their own businesses.

4. What is the role of the youth in the development of the future and society?

➢ In order for the future and society to develop, young people need to finish their education or pursue
professions, and they should also be required to put in a lot of effort in whatever endeavors they choose
to pursue. The young people of today are up against a number of obstacles, including a lack of career
possibilities and other problems. Yet, there are opportunities to triumph over some of these obstacles.
They have no choice but to seize every employment opportunity that comes their way until they achieve
their goals. The younger generation needs to demonstrate a high level of responsibility. The
empowerment of the country's youth has the potential to end poverty. In a way that is both democratic
and inclusive, he plays a crucial part in the constructive process of developing social cohesion, economic
success, and political stability in a nation. The position of the country in the years to come will be largely
determined by the youth of today. Because of this, it is necessary that sufficient opportunities be
provided to young people so that their strength and potential can be completely developed.
