• Symbols: useful in showing what fundamental

2) Communication is interpretive
• what is “interpretive”?
• E.g.1: Foreigners are hunting dogs
• E.g.2:
A Japanese student, who spent a few weeks studying in
Vietnam, showed “crossed fingers” towards his
Vietnamese friend after an argument relating to their
group presentation plan. The Japanese guy finally
agreed to follow the plan but the Vietnamese guy quit
working with him. Why?

2) Communication is interpretive
• Case 1: You have a very pleasant conversation in which the
other person expressed a similar point of view.
→“I really could communicate with him/her”
• Case 2: when disagreement exists
