Sheet Metal
Drawing Standards

Views
(See Figure - 1 for an example)

Default settings for all views, except the Iso, are hidden lines with no display
of tangents. Detail or section views may exclude the hidden lines if required to
improve clarity (if this is done, a note stating such should be added to the
view label).

Hook & mash bends will need to have the metal

thickness line added.

Default settings for the Iso view are no hidden lines and tangents solid.

Figure - 1

(see Figure -2 and Figure - 3 for an example)

Weldments are to be shown with the completed assembly on sheet 1 and the
main or non-common sheet metal base part detailed on the following sheet(s).
If the weldment is simple, all of this information can be shown on sheet 1 (in

this case, the base part is detailed in the normal drawing views and the
weldment is shown in the iso view).

Dimensioning
All English dimensions should be shown to three decimal places. All Metric
dimensions should be shown to two decimal places. Dimensions should not be

rounded off. Dimensions not shown to the maximum number of places will be
understood as containing trailing zeros (example: 12.4 on an English drawing
is actually 12.400 and not 12.375 rounded off).

Callouts for features other than corner radii (rounds, squares, etc.) can be
documented by either of the following two methods (also see section for
oblong sizes below):

With a note, showing quantity and size, labeling only one of each
different size feature.

With a chart, showing size and referencing location with a letter

designation. Quantity is optional and does not have to be included
on the chart.

Corner radii

If the size is common throughout the part, label one

radius with a note showing the size and the designation
"TYPICAL" or the abbreviation "TYP".

If there are a mixture of different size radii, label one of

the majority size with the size and "TYP" designation
note, and label one of each different limited size with a
quantity and size note.

Oblong sizes should specify the total overall width and length. This may be
accomplished either in note form or with dimensions on the oblong itself.
Dimensions to the radius center points are not permitted. The preferred oblong
"X", "Y" location dimensions are to the feature center, however dimensions to
the oblong edges are acceptable as long as it is clear on the drawing.

Formed leg dimensions for non-90° bends will originate from:

the inside surface intersection for bends with included

angles greater than 90°

the outside radius tangent for bends with included

angles less than 90°

Preferred placement for the specification of the angle of a non-90° bend is the
included angle between the inside surfaces.

Formed leg dimensions should be shown on the same side of the part/metal
thickness that they are trying to measure. If the dimension needs moved to the
opposite side for drawing clarity, a note will be attached to the dimension
explaining that it applies to the other side.

Example: a bend greater than 90° should show the

dimension on the inside of the formed profile. If it is

moved to the outside to improve clarity, a note stating
"INSIDE" will be shown directly under the dimension.

If the part contains any bill of material items other than raw material and
finishes, each instance of the item shall be identified in the most appropriate
view. Identification will consist of balloon(s) and/or hole labels, as required
for best clarity.

General Draft Guidelines

Dimensions are shown in the view that most clearly represents the feature.

Sufficient dimensions shall be shown to clearly define size, shape, and

position of each feature.

A feature shall not be located by more than one dimension in any one
direction.

A dimension shall be enclosed in parentheses '( )' when it is repeated on the

same or another drawing or is an accumulation of other dimensions. This is
what we have typically called "REF" dimensions in the past.

Unless clarity is improved, dimensions are shown outside the outline of the
part.

Dimensioning to hidden lines shall be avoided.

Turnaround Guidelines
At the time of formal EC release, drawings will be fully dimensioned.

To save time during the prototype phase, minimum dimensioned drawings

will be acceptable when the actual Pro/ENGINEER 3D model is used for
manufacturing processing. The views on these drawings will still be expected
to meet the guidelines explained above. Minimum dimensions will consist of:

"Forming dimensions" - Each individual formed leg and

the dimensions between bends (to trace a continuous
path around the part).

"Hole sizes" - Round holes, oblongs, rectangles and

squares.

To save further time during the concept phase, drawings with only forming
dimensions will be acceptable. The views on these drawings will still be
expected to meet the guidelines explained above. No formal inspection will be
performed on these parts.

Quick turnaround jobs will require manager approval and will be accepted at
any phase except the final FPO. These drawings can be similar to the concept
type explained above and will also have no formal inspection completed.
