Objective -

Burning up the Paper with a Magnifying Glass

Theory
The Bright spot on the paper that helps in the burning of paper is a highly
diminished image of the sun and thus all the heat energy which is concentrated
in one single spot burns the paper and makes a sharp hole.

Material Required -
Magnifying glass, Paper, Sunglasses, Sun, open space.

Procedure -
1. Select a safe location (where the fire cannot spread to anything else since
you need to perform the activity outdoors) to make fire using magnifying
glass.
2. Now hold the magnifying glass between your white paper and the sun.
3. As soon as the magnifying glass is under the sun focusing on the paper, it
gives a bright dot on the paper. You can make the dot size bigger by tilting
the lens back and forth. Keep in mind that keep the dot size as small as
possible in order to create the fire Faster.
4. focus the dot in one place for about a few seconds to minutes. Slowly you
can observe smoke from the focused area and followed by fire burning the
paper.
Observation-
A magnifying glass is a double convex lens that focuses the light rays striking the
surface onto a single point (focal point). as we all know that the sunshine has
heat energy. When the sunshine focuses on a spot, the light decreases in size but
intensifies in brightness. Concentrate that much energy on a single spot so that
there is enough heat energy to burn up the paper.

Result-
The heat generated and concentrated in one spot burns a hole on the paper.

Precaution-
1. Demonstrate this experiment in the open space.
2. Make sure there are no flammable materials around.
3. Wear sunglasses.
