Foreign Language Teaching Methods

Lesson Plan
1.- Objective: Students will be able to make short descriptions of people´s clothes and to
write very simple short sentences describing what people are wearing correctly to be able to
participate in social interactions. They will do this orally and in written form. Students will also
know/understand the structure of a sentence describing what a person is wearing.

2-3. Standards: Communication – Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide

and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions

4. ACTFL Proficiency Level Expected: Novice High

5. Scaffolding (building on student abilities in small steps):
A) Students have previous knowledge about colors (yellow, black, green, etc.), clothes (skirt,
pants, dress, etc.), articles, and personal pronouns.

B) What strategies I will use to teach new information: I will build on this prior knowledge by
using images, structural models, audio/video and I will use a simple model of description that
students should know and show authentic communicative interaction to meet the objective.

6. Review:
The teacher reviews prior vocabulary (and introduces what students are going to learn)
through “The Clothes Song”
https://youtu.be/_cBmnRsh8Hw
The clothing song is a fun simple song and video to review the vocabulary and to introduce
what students will learn.
The song contains previous vocabulary like colors, clothes, articles, and personal pronouns.

“The Clothes Song” lyrics:

She is wearing a pink dress
A pink dress a pink dress
She is wearing a pink dress
He is wearing a blue shirt
A blue shirt a blue shirt

7.
Vocabulary the students will need to know to meet the objective: Students already know the
vocabulary for this lesson, but they will need the structural description below

Structure the students will need to know to meet the objective:

To be able to make short descriptions of people´s clothes and to write very simple short
sentences describing what people are wearing correctly, the students will need to know the
following sentence structure:

(To be + wearing + adjective + clothes)

For example:

“I am wearing a pink skirt, a green t-shirt, and pink boots.”

“He is wearing orange shorts, a green t-shirt, and white shoes.”

“She is wearing a yellow dress and white shoes.”

Materials that will be needed (if any) to complete the lesson

Whiteboard with the description above (sentence structures examples), markers, (computer,
projector to play the video/song), pictures of persons to describe what they are wearing, paper
and pencils or pens.

8. Teach the Material:

The teacher introduces what students are going to learn through “The Clothes Song”. Students
and teacher listen and try to sing together. They do not have to learn the song. This is just a
vocabulary review and an introduction to the phrases/ sentences that the students will learn
today.

The teacher then explains to students how to write a description of what someone is wearing.
The teacher starts describing what she/he is wearing and writes on the board.

“I am wearing a pink skirt, a green t-shirt, and pink boots.”

Next, the teacher gives another example. She asks a male student to stand up and she
describes what the student is wearing and writes it on the board.

“He is wearing orange shorts, a green t-shirt, and white shoes.”

The teacher chooses then a student of the opposite sex to show how to use the opposite
pronoun when writing a description and writes on the board.

“She is wearing a yellow dress and white shoes.”

(10 minutes)

9. Guided Practice:

The teacher tapes pictures of persons on the board and draws blanks on the board for each
word of the sentence describing what the person in the picture is wearing.

Then she asks students (beginning with the stronger students) one by one to come to the
board and write the missing words of the sentence describing the person in the picture.

They may look at the example descriptions from the Teacher Activity that was left on the
board.

For example:

“He is wearing a red t-shirt, yellow shorts, and blue shoes.”

….. is ………... a ……. ………, …...…… ……….…... and ………... ………….

“She is wearing a yellow dress and black shoes.”

.…. is …………... a ………....…. …………… and …………...….. ……………

(10-15 minutes)

10. Independent Practice:

The teacher puts students in pairs. Each student gets 2 pictures and a sheet of paper. Each
student has to choose 1 of the given pictures and write a short description (1 sentence) of
what the person on the chosen picture is wearing and then show to their partners the 2
pictures and the description to guess what picture matches the description. If there is extra
time, at the end of the activity teacher invites some students to show the rest of the class their
pictures and to describe what the person on the picture is wearing (or get the others to
describe).

(15-20 minutes)

11. Differentiated Instruction Options:

A) Students with lower language levels will be paired with students with higher language levels
during Independent Practice to get help if needed.

B) During Independent Practice, the teacher visits student pairs to provide help when needed.

*Varied learning modalities for all students include the reading of written forms on the board,
the creation of oral and written descriptions (in “Teach the Material, Guided Practice and
Independent Practice”), oral interaction (communicative interaction with their peers), and oral
presentation.

12. Formative Assessment:

The teacher will observe students and assess students´ progress during the Guided and
Independent Practice. The teacher will assign homework relative to the needs of the students
who need help.

13. Summative Assessment:

Students have to do a short assessment where they have to choose one of the given pictures
and write a short description (1 sentence) of the clothes that the person on the chose picture
is wearing to prove their acquired knowledge.

Each student gets 2 pictures, they have to choose 1 of the given pictures and write a short
description (1 sentence) of what the persons in the pictures are wearing.
