Science education research of the 1960s reached an unambiguous conclusion: the classroom
teacher will influence student outcomes far more than specific curricula, textbooks, or teaching
strategies. Thus, student outcomes from the same STS course can vary significantly from one
teacher to another. Within any population of teachers there will be three groups: (1) those whose
philosophy of science education is consistent with an STS approach, (2) those that are
diametrically opposed to an STS approach, and (3) those in the middle that can move in either
direction due to persuasion or by the requirement to use certain materials
