JOHN Beacons Fest? What on earth is that? VEE Just a music festival. All my friends are going; Eddie, Amy, Rebecca, Louise-JOHN Music festivals are no place for a group of young teens. And Im not coming with you! VEE But dad-JOHN No buts, Violet. Youre not going, end of.

John strides off, leaving a sullen Violet behind INT. KITCHEN - AFTERNOON John is at the cooker, Vee sits in a corner playing her guitar quietly and scribbling notes. The door opens, and SUSAN enters. SUSAN Hi daddy! JOHN Susan, love. SUSAN So.. how was it? JOHN ..Oh, yknow. Look, youll want some tea anyway - help me get some sausages on. SUSAN Dad! Stop changing the subject, youve been stressing about OFSTED for weeks! JOHN It was fine. When youve been teaching as long as I have one bunch of inspectors is much the same as another. SUSAN But what did they say? Did you pass!? JOHN Room for improvement. Story of my life. Now stop yakking and get some broccoli out of the freezer. SUSAN (towards Vee) Why cant SHE do it? Sits there strumming that thing, never helping.. Hi Vee - how are you? In her own little world Vee continues to strum the guitar. SUSAN Suit yourself. Susan turns her back on Vee.

SUSAN We finished the audit today council love it. I think theyll use us for everything now. Thanks dad! Helpful knowing a maths teacher. VEE If youre an accountant... SUSAN Whats eating you then? Vee scowls at Susan, and returns to her guitar. JOHN Leave her Sue - she wants to go to the.. beamsely.. festival. VEE BEACONS Festival. SUSAN On her own!? JOHN No, with Amy, Rebecca, Eddie-SUSAN Youre NOT letting her go? To a music festival? With Eddie? JOHN Eddies a good boy! SUSAN But shes only 15! Come on Dad, youre not going to let her persuade you. Vee stands up. VEE Its nothing to do with you. SUSAN Listen - Im your big sister in case youd forgotten. Picking up her guitar, Vee storms out. SUSAN Oh yeah, flounce off to your room. I just dont want anything to happen to you!

VEE EXACTLY. Nothing ever DOES happen to me. The sound of thudding up the stairs, followed by a slamming door. SUSAN Well, at least well get some peace. INT. VEES ROOM - CONTINUOUS Vee is sat with a keyboard on her bed, and a notepad and pen in her hands. VEE Here I am. My thoughts forbidden. I need to be where they are not hidden. Free to shout, free to dance. Free to speak my mind at last. Ok! She puts the notepad down, and begins playing VEE (Sung) NEED TO BE WHERE NOTHING IS HIDDEN. NO LIES TO CONCEAL, NO LOVE FORBIDDEN. FREE TO SHOUT, FREE TO DANCE, FREE TO SPEAK MY MIND AT LAST. NEED TO SHOUT SO YOU WILL HEAR IT. THIS HOUSE CANT CONTAIN MY SPIRIT. NO MORE WORRY, NO MORE CARE, FORGET I HAVE TO BE ANYWHERE. JOHN Tonight? Its not Thursday. SUSAN The meal! Were going out with my boss, remember? JOHN Ive cooked some bangers for you now! And whys Cameron coming if youre going to your bosss? SUSAN Its important. If Mr. Wiggins meets Cam and sees were going to get married, hell definitely promote me. Stable family life and all, helps in my line of work. The doorbell rings again SUSAN (Shouting) Coming! JOHN (Shouting) Violet! Come down and get some tea! Susan enters with CAMERON. CAMERON Evening, Mr Cole. JOHN Hello Cameron. SUSAN (WITH JOHN AND CHORUS) (contd) AND LEAVE US OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND. INT. KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS SUSAN Right. Give me a minute, and im ready to go. Susan heads upstairs. John is staring out of the window as he cooks. CAMERON Mr. Cole? Are you okay? JOHN To be honest Cameron, I just dont know. I cant figure it out. CAMERON You mean youre not sure, about Violet and the festival? JOHN Certainly not as sure as Susan. We used to be so close me and Violet. CAMERON You still are! Anyone can see that. Its the way youve brought her up Joh. She just wants a chance to let her hair down, a bit of freedom. Susans head pokes down from the top of the stairs. SUSAN Cameron. Have you been to the toilet? You know what youre like. Cameron sighs. JOHN Sometimes she reminds me so much of her mother. Anne, that is. Its like all this is a re-run. A dream I cant shake off...

FLASHBACK - EXT. MOORS - DAY John and his wife, ANNE, are sitting on a picnic blanket. ANNE John? JOHN Yes Anne? ANNE You remember when we first met, and I think it was our first date. JOHN Up here, on the moor? ANNE It was beautiful. Just like it is now. Remember that sunset, and the robins egg we found by the hedge. Do you remember what I told you John, about my dream? I know were pregnant, and things will change, but I still have that ambition. JOHN Of course Anne. ANNE And youll help me, you promised. JOHN I promised. INT. KITCHEN - DAY Anne is getting her belongings together in the kitchen, John is sat through in another room. ANNE John, have you got that tenner? JOHN What did you say it was for? ANNE You know what its for. A baby starts crying. JOHN Oh yes, artists supplies.. Violets crying.

CONTINUED: ANNE John, i need that tenner! JOHN Youre not an artist Anne. ANNE I could be if youd let me buy the brushes and paint. INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY Anne is sitting on a sofa, staring into space. John, behind her, has his arm outstretched. JOHN Come on, Violet. Big steps! Well done. ANNE All im asking for is one weekend away. JOHN Anne, you always want to be away, somewhere else. Dont you like being with us: me, Susan, Vee? Your family. ANNE Its a three-day course and Ive always wanted to learn pottery. I feel it in my hands. I know I could do it. JOHN Never enough, painting, pottery... Youve got your job in the school. I know its only cleaning but at least it gets you out the house. Come on, Vee. ANNE But I need more. I want more. SUSAN / ANNE Let me go. Let me go... INT. KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

Susan strides in to the kitchen. Johns eyes glisten as Cam pats his shoulder. SUSAN Here we are! Mr. Wiggins will be waiting.

CAMERON Take it easy John, youll be fine. JOHN Enjoy your meal Cameron. INT. VEES ROOM - CONTINUOUS Vees phone rings. VEE Amy. AMY Hey Vee, what you doing? VEE Dunno. Writing a poem, might be a song. AMY Youre always writing poems, loser. Look, are you coming to Beacons? VEE I hope so, but you know what my dads like... AMY You always do this! Say youll do something then back off. Just fight for something for once. Itll be fun! VEE Okay. AMY Well, listen. Theres only one seat left in my brothers car and Jenny from two doors down has been asking. VEE Look, look, I will come, all right! Ill talk to my dad. Hell let me go, I know he will. AMY So let me know. First thing tomorrow. Amy hangs up, and Vee throws her phone down.

VEE Right. Vee goes to her bedroom door. As she opens it John is stood there ready to knock. JOHN There you are. Im off to bed, night Violet. VEE Dad, im going to the festival, whatever you say. JOHN Dont make this tough for me Violet. VEE Let me go then! Its only 3 days and ill be with friends, nothings going to happen. JOHN But how do you know? Youre only young. At school I hear all sorts of things about festivals like this. Lets just get some sleep. VEE But youve never been to anything like this. You never go anywhere or do anything that isn t teaching maths. JOHN Or looking after the family. Someones got to do that. Violet, its only because I care. VEE If you cared, youd let me go. Its music, Dad. Its what I want to do. Three days is all Im asking. JOHN Now stop this and go to bed. Your place is here with me and here youll stay. VEE I dont care what you say!

ANNE! Vee stops. VEE What did you call me? JOHN Where are you going? VEE To the park. Vee storms downstairs. JOHN But its nearly midnight. The door opens, and slams shut. JOHN VEE! EXT. PARK - SUMMER EVENING Vee walks purposefully before sitting on a swing.

VEE Why doesnt he understand? He didnt used to be like this. If mum was around, if she was here now... From round a corner she hears running feet. Fear taking hold she stands up and braces herself. As a figure comes sprinting round she sticks her leg out. The person trips and shouts. VEE What.. Eddie rolls over, and looks up at Vee. EDDIE What are you doing? VEE Eddie?! EDDIE Violet? You kicked me! VEE What are you doing? EDDIE Jogging! I always jog in the park. Eddie stands up and starts to warm down, star jumps and the such. VEE At this time of night? What does you mum think? EDDIE She doesnt think. I could be out all night and she wouldnt care. You? VEE I needed space. EDDIE Youll get that if you keep kicking your friends in the bollocks. (PAUSE) Dont tell me. Its your dad. See, I just put two and two together. Get it? Maths teacher?

Hes obsessed. Just because my mum walked out on him, he wont let me go anywhere. He even called me Anne. Her name. And the more he stops me spreading my wings, the more I want to run away. Just like she did. Just like I want to right now. EDDIE Where did she go? VEE He wont talk about it, never has. Apparently she wanted to an artist and ran away to some hippy place. INT. HOUSE - NIGHT Susan enters happily with Cameron in tow. SUSAN Promotions in the bag. What do you reckon, Cammy? Food was crap though. Why did you have that beef? Looked horrible. CAMERON Wasnt that bad at all actually Susie. SUSAN And the wine he chose. Susan and Cameron head through into the kitchen. SUSAN (CONT.) Really, Dad. Tasted like watered down water. CAMERON Susan chose it, Mr. Cole. Cost a bit too. Johns head is in his hands as he sits and the kitchen table. SUSAN We had to impress the boss. If wed chosen some cheap Italian plonk.... Dad? Are you all right? JOHN Shes gone. SUSAN What? Who?! JOHN Violet, shes gone. To the park, on her own. Shes been gone for hours. SUSAN Im phoning the police.. She always was dramatic. Takes after you know who. CAMERON Wait. Calling out the police might be the last thing she needs.

KITCHEN - LATER John is slumped over the kitchen table, asleep. A cup of tea sits cold next to him. The front door opens and slams shut. John wakes with a start. JOHN Violet?! Quietly and slowly Vee enters the kitchen. JOHN Violet! Where have you been? Ive been worried sick. I tried calling you. Your phone was off. I called Amy. She didnt know where you were. VEE Gone for good? JOHN Where were you? VEE At the park, like I said id be. JOHN On your own? VEE I met Eddie. Up at the swings. Where you used to take me when I was small. JOHN You remember that? VEE Of course I do. We used to do masses of stuff together. Anyway. Eddie talked things through with me and I think I understand you a bit more now. JOHN I thought you werent coming back VEE But..
