Laboratory Exercise 3
Baking with Acid
Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Observe the effect that an acid has on baking.

Materials:

 Vinegar
 6 cups
 2 teaspoons
 2 tablespoons
 Baking powder
 Baking soda
 2 sheets of paper

Procedures:

1. Fill one cup one-half full with vinegar.


2. Fill another cup with water.
3. Separate the two sheets of paper and lay them on a table.
4. Place 2 cups on each sheet of paper.
5. Put 1 teaspoon of baking powder in two of the cups sitting on one of the sheets of paper. Write BAKING
POWDER on the paper, and #1 in front of one cup and #2 in front of the other cup.
6. Use a clean teaspoon to place 1 teaspoon baking soda in the remaining two cups. Write BAKING
SODA on the paper. Number the cups #3 and #4.
7. Start with the baking powder cups. Add 2 tablespoons of water to cup #1. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar
to cup #2.
8. Observe the results.
9. Add 2 tablespoons of water to cup #3 which contains baking soda.
10. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to cup #4 that also contains baking soda.
11. Observe and record the results.
