Introduction
Solutions can be classified as Saturated or Unsaturated. Solutions with the
maximum amount of dissolved solute in a given solvent at a particular temperature is

classified as SATURATED SOLUTION. Solution with the less amount of dissolved
solute is classified as UNSATURATED SOLUTION.
There are factors that affect the rate of solubility of any solute in a solution.
These are the amount of solute added, temperature, and the frequency of stirring
the solution.
In this activity, you will prepare solutions and classify them based on the amount
of dissolved solute in a given solvent at a particular temperature. Let us begin.

What Is It

Solubility is the property of any substance (solute) to be dissolved in a solvent.

The solute you used in Activity 1 was white sugar while the solvent was water. In the
previous modules, solute was described as the substance which is dissolved in the
solution. In addition, it is the component added in a solution in a lesser amount. Most
junk foods and instant noodles contain high amount of solutes, such as salt, which is
dangerous to our health. Solvent is the substance that can dissolve the solute and in
greater amount in the solution. Water is the most common example of solvent. In fact,
it is considered as the universal solvent. When solute and solvent are homogenously
mixed, they formed a solution.
The solubility of a solute is affected by different factors like temperature of the
solution, amount of the solvent, size of the solute, and stirring the solution. You
have seen these effects to every solution. Right?
The amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent was the bases in
classifying the solutions you had prepared. These solutions are saturated and
unsaturated. Saturated solutions are easy to identify due to the maximum amount
of dissolved solute in a given amount of solvent at a particular temperature. In the
Activity 1, you were able to prepare this solution. The presence of few undissolved
sugar granules at the bottom of the glass in each set-up indicates that the solution
cannot hold additional sugar molecules in the system thus these granules settle at the
bottom of the glass. Other common examples of saturated solutions include
carbonated drinks such as cola is saturated with carbonic acid, instant noodles
saturated with salts, and Earth’s soil saturated with nitrogen. Unsaturated solutions
5
on the other hand, contain less amount of dissolved
solute in a given solvent at any temperature.
Common examples of unsaturated solutions are
mist, iced coffee, and air. Figure 1 shows the
arrangement of the molecules of the solute (circles)
and the solvent (squares) at molecular level after

these components were equally distributed in the
solution. This condition is called equilibrium. The Figure 2. Arrangement of the
distribution of these substances is greatly affected molecules of solute ( ) and

What’s More

Instant noodles became a staple food of the Filipino masses due to its
affordability and wide availability (Freedman, 2017). Two years later, Filipino health
professionals urged parents not to feed their young children with instant noodles
because of the presence of high amount of salt (PNA, 2019). In addition, they said that
healthy eating does not start during adulthood but instead during early childhood.
Your task in this activity is to write your opinion about eating instant noodles.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Below is the scoring rubric for
